Giants may have bright future; A's? Hard to tell

interesting article on the direction of both bay area teams...what do you think fair analysis? seems to miss mention of certain players on both sides.

the argument that giants have an easier path due to the weak division, a's have the huge roadblock of angels

giants: no schierholtz, villalona, velez, bowker, romo etc or prospects like noonan, crawford, gillespie

mentions the core of burriss/pablo/lewis, pitching depth, posey/alderson/bummy on the way

A's: no devine, buck, ziegler, suzuki, etc or prospects like cahill, anderson

mentions sweeney, gonzalez, smith

what both teams have depth for use and  future trades. giants could acclerate the process by trading cain/sanchez or spending money. A's could trade street  or prospects

http://www.contracostatimes.com/athletics/ci_10641450?nclick_check=1

Fast-forward six months, and things aren't nearly so bleak. The Giants uncovered a perennial Cy Young candidate (Tim Lincecum), finally found a successor to closer Robb Nen (Brian

Wilson), discovered a hitting machine to solve their first-base woes (Pablo Sandoval) and transformed themselves from a club that was old and tired to one that is young and energetic.

As a result, they'll enter '09 with Lincecum and Matt Cain giving them a 1-2 punch atop the rotation that many teams would envy. The presence of Sandoval, left fielder Fred Lewis and shortstop Emmanuel Burriss gives them potential pieces to the future puzzle that weren't in place at this time a year ago. And Wilson's presence in the ninth means Sabean has one less area of repair regarding his bullpen.

Oh, and don't forget the coming attractions — catcher Buster Posey and pitchers Madison Bumgarner and Tim Alderson.

Does that mean the Giants are a timely move away from being in the mix? Hard to say, but it helps that they reside in the National League West, a division that has been won with no more than 88 wins in three of the past four seasons.

Does anyone here really give a rat’s ass if the A’s have a future or not?

Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???

I'm sure..

some do. But me? Nah. In the Baseball Mogul world I’m designing, Oakland doesn’t even have a team. Of course there aer also 6 teams in Texas…

Baseball Mogul is my lifeline when the Giants aren’t doing well. Yeah, I’ve been playing a lot the last few years.

Oops

That was weird. Apparently I don’t know how to properly put things in brackets.

There was an incredibly witty comment in brackets in my post that vanished into the ether. Just think of something witty, and imagine I said it.

not sure why he would think that the A’s don’t have a bright future, unless he’s just talking about 2009. they have one of the deepest farm systems in the league.

I’m not an A’s fan, so they’re pretty much off my radar. That being said, it seems they are always in “look to the future” mode with a perpetual rebuilding process:

1. Build a deep farm system with talented prospects
2. Promote prospects to the big league club
3. Prospects bring the team to the brink of contention
4. Gut the team via trades and acquire more prospects (also, tell fans you’re rebuilding for the future)

5. Repeat the process

by rightcenterfielder on Oct 7, 2008 11:24 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

they are a pretty forward looking team and they do tend to repeat their actions over again. They don’t like to wait until its too late to get rid of guys. They’d rather get rid of him too early, than too late. Beane really knows how to work this angle. I believe he tries to time things so that a bunch of guys come up and develop together and have a few years wherein they can compete before he guts the team and the process starts up again. In this case, it seems as if he’s trying to time things to coincide with their new stadium deal.

This is really weird

I was just thinking about the near futures of both teams this morning.

The Giants appear to be on the right track and are probably 2 years away from being a contender, and maybe 3-4 years away from being a possible division winner.

The A’s seem to perpetually be in rebuilding mode. I think they’ll be competetive, but I’m not sure they will get “over the hump” any time soon, since they have shown they can get close but not win the cigar time and time again. A lot of their moves are probably tied into the new stadium plans. Is the new stadium a certainty? If not, the A’s may be better off moving to a market where they are guaranteed a new stadium. I’ve always thought Sacramento might be a viable option. Las Vegas would also be a possibility if MLB could get over the gambling stigma the city holds.

I think Billy has worked this angle pretty good. Considering the playoffs are one big crapshoot, you pretty much just need to get your team in and hope they hit a hot streak. Both Florida and Oakland have consistently had one of the lowest payrolls in the league. One team has gotten lucky twice and went all the way and the other hasn’t been so lucky. From 2000 – 2006, the A’s made the postseason 4 times, you would figure they would get lucky one of those years. Problem is nobody wants to go see these teams. Same with the Rays, second lowest payroll, no attendence, ALCS baby!!

Yeah.

It kind of shoots a hole in the “winning cures everything” mantra. I know fans love to win, but they also love their players. It must be really tough to get attached to a young player only to have him be dealt away 4 or 5 years after bursting onto the scene. I don’t think I’ve ever been so attached to two young pitchers as I have with Cain and Lincecum. I know there will come a time when the team may not be able to keep both, but I’m sure many Giants fans hope that day takes it’s time in arriving.

I’m not one of the embittered, Giants-hating species of A’s fan.

Point of fact, I’m actually from San Francisco. The fact that I happen to be more of an A’s fan is basically a coincidence.

Went to lunch with a Brewers fan yesterday and he seemed to be about 75% sure that CC would sign with the Dodgers. If he does they could be pretty scary next year.

I have to wonder what it is with the A’s fans I’ve encountered around these parts. One said he/she/it wasn’t interested in the history of the team before the Oakland years, and now this one says the A’s don’t have a bright future despite having one of the top—if not the top—farm systems in the game. Kinda seems like they don’t know shit about their own team.

Weird.

Most of the A’s fans who post here seem pretty intelligent to me. I don’t know who said that he/she doesn’t care about the A’s before Oakland, but that’s just one poster, and, to be honest, it doesn’t sound that weird to me.

..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

That’s like saying it’s not strange for a Giants fan to not know what the Shot Heard Round the World is. Or the Polo Grounds. Or Christy Mathewson.

I guess

But I’m not sure the all Giants fans really care all that much about Mathewson or Ott or Polo Grounds (maybe the Shot Heard Round the World, but that’s like the most famous HR ever), at least not as much as they care about Bonds or Mays Field or the 1993 pennant race. And, again, that’s just one poster. We have our share of weirdos too.

I know I’m strange, but I really want to read more about the New York Gothams and the Troy Trojans. That’s where it all began.

It’s like I, as a Giants fan, not accepting the start of Mays career because he was not playing in San Francisco yet. Nothing personal but I may never “get” this attitude.

Well to be perfectly frank I only really care about the A's right now

The history, while nice, isn’t all that important to me, not even stuff from the early 2000’s (though I do still have a mancrush on Tim Hudson). Of course as a 21 year old I’m probably just an ignorant youngster with no respect for the old guard. I’m sure I’ll be telling everyone about the awesome A’s franchise of the ‘10s (teens? that sounds dumb) 50 years from now and get the same answer I’m currently giving from the kids of that generation.

What you said doesn’t sound dumb.

Some of the most extremely knowledge fans of the sport in general ( both history and outside of their teams immediate interests) have had the pleasure to interact with have been A’s fans. That said there is just large chunk of the A’s fandom has been that way since the 70’s. I don’t get the later. * shrugs*
