Blowing Steam: What Are You Looking Forward to the Rest of the Year...

... and the beginning of the next?

I think with the baseball season over and some of us already suffering withdrawl from San Francisco Giants baseball, we've been blowing off most of our steam by using one of the great McCC pastimes: sarcasm. And don't get me wrong. I mean, I'm totally down with that.

I just think it's time for an honest off-topic FanPost. Just, kind of, get away from the Giants a little, since they're not playing anymore. Get away from baseball a little, since it's not being played by any worthwhile teams anymore (okay, you can still pay attention to the Rays, and always the "team playing the Dodgers").

Star-divide

But at a time (often referred to as Winter, though much of it actually happens during Autumn) when that one thing that sustains so many for so much of the year - Giants baseball - is gone, I want to turn our attention to the things that will make "Winter" sustainable. The things worth looking forward to that will make it okay that baseball is, for all intentsive purplesons, gone.

I'm actually looking forward to a lot these days. Among the list:, in no particular order

Las Vegas: My brother is turning 21 this month and we're all going to Las Vegas to celebrate. We're going to Bobby Flay's restaurant and we'll be seeing Penn and Teller. And we'll be drinking. I'm looking way the hell forward to that.

Apartment Hunting: I hope I can move out on my own by the end of the year. Total financial independence for the first time in my entire life is looming. It's a pretty thrilling prospect.

Quantum of Solace: Come oooon, man. It's going to be cool.

World of Goo: Comes out on the WiiWare on October 13th. Fantastic art style, challenging, straightforward gameplay, cheap. Give me some of that!

Halloween: I'm not even completely sure what I'm doing yet, but it looks like it will involve a Mad Hatter costume and some volume of alcohol.

Weddings: One of my very best friends is getting married, and I'm the best man. Yes, he's a Dodgers fan, but that's okay this time. I'll just wear my Giants socks during the event.

The Election: NON PARTISAN DISCUSSION ONLY - I'm voting one way or the other in what has become the most significant election of my voting years. I'm excited about that.

Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of a New World: When I get this game and get some time, I'm going to cannonball the two Symphonia games, since I have yet to play the GC game.

Birthdays: I turn 24 in very late March. Baseball will be just about to start again, and I'll be Willy Mays' number for an entire year. And the year after, well, you all know me.

You?

More ridiculous shenanigans on Heroes (this show has become pure crack this season and it’s beautiful.) Also: The Office, Pushing Daisies, Life, House.

My dad is flying out to visit me in two weeks.

Election.

The new Grinderman album might leak before the end of the year.

Several trips to New York, probably, plus maybe one to Toronto.

I need to go to some concerts.

I was actually really close to giving up on Heroes until this week because I was frustrated that Hiro was so ridiculously stupid, but it was more fun.

Though I’m not sure why Claire and Peter can survive a nuclear bomb going off right next to them. I mean, that’s got to be just as brain-killing as a bullet, right? Oh well. I guess the future is just crazy.

Fringe is probably a better show, but I only watch it because it’s on at 9, and I watch things at 8 and 10. It’s okay, but I don’t think it’s really anything special (and this is coming from someone who’s been watching JJ Abrams shows since the first season of Alias).

Still watching Heroes

only because I am kind of hooked. It seems like it is starting to go a similar direction as Lost unfortunately. Plot twists and scripts that make you go “OK, WTF is going on now ?”)

I do like a good “Government Conspiracy” in my TV, Movies and Books , so Fringe has that going for it :-)

Right now

I’m orienting all of my attention on Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks. This first year teacher stuff, having been hired a day before the school year started in a district with significant poverty and a 41% drop out rate and working seven days a week (that ended this week, now I just work six days a week!), is kicking my butt.

Well as a teacher, when you are at work you are always performing. You basically have to be perfect. No profanity, little sarcasm … I know with the younger grades you are expected to always be sweetness and light. One false step, one slip of the tongue and someone’s off to the principal.
Someone got upset with me one year because I told a child “I’ll be right there! Hold your horses!”

Thank goodness for those vacations, when you can be human 7 days a week again.
That’s why I liked our “year round” 3 months on / 1 month “off” schedule where the destress / catch up on paperwork periods were more evenly distributed… damn budget crisis.

So no, it doesn’t feel weird, you’re so damn tired by the time they roll around, you’re just thankful.

Big life changes coming up

Applying to San Jose State and Stanford in the next few weeks.
Taking SAT subject tests (French language, English literature, and US history) for Stanford admissions and waiting on the scores from the SAT reasoning test I took over the weekend.
Moving to the South Bay at the end of December/beginning of January. Also moving out on my own, though I’ll have roommates.
Taking a Spanish course at De Anza College in Cupertino over winter quarter.
I want to do something fun for Halloween. I love Halloween. I dress up every year. The test date for the SAT subject tests is November 1, which sort of rules out partying the night before. I have my costume (slutty nun) so I’m hoping the rest of the details come together soon.
And I got laid off on Friday so I have to look for work here too.

hmmmm

well, I’m pretty much starting a new life in college and that whole thing is rather consuming.
so, let’s see.

School? I actually thoroughly enjoy my classes.
possible p/t internship in DC at Lois Capps’ office. We’ll see how that goes.
Theater! I’m starting an improv troupe and hopefully that will be off the ground soon. I’m also probably going to be in a stage show, The Pillowman by Martin Mcdonagh.
East coast winters. I’ve never been through one and am thoroughly unprepared for it. but i’m pretty excited for it regardless.
halloween! the first time i’ve ever been excited. I’m going trick or treating at the embassies with AU kids and then partying until god knows when.
I’m going to new york this weekend and the DC music scene is bumping until winter break.

-MOST EXCITING!-
Beard Growing! I’ve been growing my beard since february and it’s nearing mountain man status. I’m keeping it until i go back home for the holidays.

from january to pitchers and catchers i’ll be curled up in a ball in the corner of my room watching archived games on mlb.tv and crying endlessly.

by howtheyscored on Oct 6, 2008 9:33 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Well..

I’m taking classes in college again, so that takes up some time. Work takes up more time. Other than that, I’ve started to enjoy the CBS Monday sitcoms, Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men, and Worst Week. I’m always off that night, and if I’m not doing anything else then I’ll watch these shows. it’s just about the only TV I watch, besides Letterman every night.

Otherwise I’m really just doing whatever comes up, which is mainly schoolwork.

This winter though, I am hoping to get up to the slopes here this winter, I missed snowboarding last year, although I can’t think that the boarding will be as good as in CA here.

I may also be able to take a trip home for the holidays, I did last year a bit after new years.

Me

I finished with school a couple weeks ago and have started looking for work. In the past few days, I’ve been scouring craigslist’s art/media postings for any applicable jobs. I’m starting to get restless having nothing to do just after a week, so I hope I can get something soon. I also want money because you can buy things with it. I might have an opportunity to draw some comics for VIZ, so I’m trying to get some stuff together for that.

Beyond that, I’m looking forward to some movies like Quantam of Solace and…. uh… I dunno. Also I’m going to be playing games like Sonic Chronicles, which hopefully will be here soon. There was some sort of mixup with GameStop because they claimed that my billing address didn’t match the one for my card. *shrug * I hope I still get my Sonic stylus they promised with pre-orders. In the meantime, I’ve been playing Astro Boy: Omega Factor made by the fine folks at Treasure. It’s majorly kicking my butt, but it’s awesome.

-College Applications (UC Davis, Stanford, maybe Berkeley? I dunno much about it but I’ve heard varying things)
-Rock Band 2 (I’m a huge music videya game junkie but never played a RB before. Probably getting it for Wii)
- The prospect of the inevitable offseason huge waste of money from Sabean lurks at the back of my mind

by Sammy Danger on Oct 6, 2008 9:14 PM PDT   0 recs

Berkeley depends on what you’re looking for in a college (and looking to study), as well as what kind of college atmosphere you’re capable of tolerating (or, on the flip side, interested in participating in).

Davis ia great school, and you can’t do better than the Aggs for certain things.

What are you hoping to get out of / learn / find in college? Those things really make a big difference.

Howie is correct. You’ll do better at a school that feels right to you in ways beyond one factor; academia, the social scene, school activities including and not limited to sports, and all the other experiences a person can get from a school. Everyone’s criteria is different of course, but I have to say you’d do well to find a school that teaches you how to tell your ass from a hole in the ground. Far too many schools turn out fine students, but a lot of these fine students are dumb as rocks once they get out of school.

+109 on that. I grew up a diehard Bears fan(dad works for Housing and Student Services, grandpa was one of Pappy’s Boys) and when it came to college, I had pretty much decided I was gonna pursue music. Cal has one general music major. Oregon has an entire school of music and much better players and faculty to learn from. It also is as kickass, if not more kickass, a sports and campus life school than Cal. In summation, yadda yadda yadda college is gonna be great if you listen to the McCoven.

Wot a busy lot.

Since being booted from my third private school in three years I’ve been on my own and working since I was 19.

Video games are (Is , since Vic Jr. is fixated on Halo3 and nothing else) someting I grind my teeth at in parental frustration.

When I was carless the last few years I swore once I was driving again I’d take classes – but for what? Christ , I’ll be 49 this year…a two + four year program – education? – puts me out in the market at 55 , and how much is a starting teacher’s salary? And if you’re at all principled about the amount of support you get from the administration for funding or the parental support at home you’re frustrated both financially and mentally.

I don’t know what area of education you are interested in; however, if you are into speech/language type stuff, you might want to look into being a speech language assistant. It’s a 2 year degree, in a lot of places SLPA’s earn about the same as a teacher. It’s a relatively new thing in northern california, pretty well established in the south. I’m in the first wave going through ARC right now. [I won’t be able to retire young, but I can’t keep chasing munchkins when I’m 50]

And to those of you young whippersnappers trying to figure out what to do… there is a desperate shortage of Speech Language Pathologists, probably because to be employable you need a master’s degree. The money is decent – because there’s a shortage I suppose.
