Who is remotely interesting in the group of free agent Infielders?
What I am hoping for his a bit of thrashing out which if any of these guys would by possibly useful for the Giants in 2009 & 2010 as the McCoven see it. . Yes I am hiding down here fan shots so we only get hijacks ( can always use a good laugh) or thoughtful posts. . Tex - Very Good but will cost way too much. So lets ignore him. . That leaves us … .. Mark Ellis - We have possible answers in house for the 2010, 2011& one season that would not see the light of day with him being signed. ... Furcal - See Crede and back injury’s. ... Izturis? - good glove can play more then one spot. Nothing special with the bat but not a complete black hole & can steal. ... Jaun Uribe? - Hey the White Sox were using him at third & he should be cheaper then Crede. ... Casey Blake? - can play 1st & Rf. Is rumored to want to be in the mid U.S. ... GarciaParra? - Has played some 3rd in the past. 1 bad year in the last 4 vs. LHP but could he be useful as other half a first base platoon absorb time at third? ... Adam Everett? - this era’s all glove no hit SS. Could he soak up time at 3rd? ... Crede - hey Juan Urbie replaced this guy. He is strictly flier material at this point. ... Aaron Boone? - he has played third for full seasons before. ... Russell Branyan - Has power but LHP eats him alive. ... . Anyone care to add, or strike, names to this list? How about refine it down to players you think might fit the Gaints needs?

On my refined the list – as on now – I get …
Blake, Branyan, Uribe & Boone for third base time. I have feeling Blake will be highly chased after and at his age I would let him go if thats that case. Not enough bang for the bucks & years. So I would lean to Branyan then Aurilia then Boone to be part of the pain sponge at third. Both should be cheep.
I am on the edge with Izturis. He is basically most of what we hope Burriss can become but he is already there. He too is on the right side of 30. The down side is how do we keep Bochy from forcing Burriss to rot on the bench for the next season or two?

The only guy I like out of that bunch is Russell Branyan. The other three aren’t all that great. Izturis would be OK on the bench, but I’d rather give Burriss a chance.

I never claimed they were good options. J
Just looking to see if any of them could be useful.

I, for one, am hoping that Burriss will more than that. Like, maybe an OBP over .300.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

I think we hope for the same thing on Burriss. That’s why I chose the words " most of what we hope for". Izturis should be used to add flexibility to the infield if I had my way. But its worth noting he turned in a very nice season with the glove at SS. It would either shove Ochoa off the roster or he stays on the 25 man as Burriss, and Denker play every day in Fresno.

I have to assume we are going into the season:
C-Molina
1b-Ishi
2b-Velez/Frandsen
SS-Burris
3B-Pablo
OF-Winn/Lewis/Rowand/Schierholtz
I don’t see any of the guys above helping us enough to warrant the money, except potentially Furcal.

Well if going short term you for a banged up Furcal of a healthy Izturis?
I guess when Furcall goes on the D.L. Burriss gets play time. But then that discourages the team from putting Burriss in Fresno were he would get steady play time so he could keep improving. To me IFF the front office wants perminate answer at SS then Burriss has to be placed were he can play 5+ days a week. And on a Bochy’s bench is not that place.
I expect Pablo to see a lot of time at third, see Bob Brenly in the mids 80’s, but i can’t count him playing there more then 400 inings. So that leave 1k to 1100 innings to fill.

Travis Denker can hit a little. That's why I drive his bus. Not much about baseball here .

Well this is the Giants in 2008 and there is not Timor Cain on the hill today. What else do you expect?

Free East Timor Cain!
Looking at that list, I see we load up on cheap middle relief options and fifth starters. It’s like an all you can eat buffet of arms!

Timor Strikes Back
I to like the options for a fifth / reclamation starters we could have. And that’s even before the team’s non tender guys. With a little luck we chose a guy we can either flip or really gives the ‘Pen a boost by helping the starting rotation lift 50 -100 innings of f their shoulders. And it should be achievable with out tying up a roster slot for 3+ years.

I guess Blalock should be back with his team, otherwise he could be a nice pickup.
Also, I’m interested in hearing what people think about Felipe Lopez. If he’s cheap, he could be a good addition, but I really don’t know.

Have The Rangers officially declined Blalock’s option yet? I think they will though its not a given. Blalock’s shoulder sounds like its cooked. So that means he could only play first or Dh.
Lopez was a player I was very interested in coming into this season. Puts up reasonable numbers Vs LHP. Has played a little at third ( Baseball Reference say he has played 95 games there). I view him as erratic as all get out with a glove and stick. If signed to play a middle infield spot I am down on him. We have enough question marks for there already.
I could be interested in him part of a pain sponge for third base. That could fill in time if the young ones flame out or get hurt up the middle. Another Boras Client and he made 4.9MM last year. I doubt Boras will let him sing for less money and definitely would not want the team committed to him for more the 2 seasons. I hate to say this but I think I lean towards the older Branyan at this point. But not heavily so.

Yup, he is severely flawed. Yup he had troubles in D.C. Yup Boras is his agent.
But if , and only If, they think they have him figured out and cheap to absorb time at third this coming season I can’t say I am steadfast against it.

The only one I’m remotely interested in is Mark Ellis – I’m not convinced by Velez’s abilities, Frandsen’s health, or the Giants’ willingness to let Denker play. Ochoa is worthless and I prefer Burriss at SS. Downs and Noonan are a couple years away in all likelihood. So.

You’d like to think, though, that if Velez sucked rocks and Frandsen got hurt, the Giants would have to play Denker.
by rotorueter on Oct 4, 2008 2:59 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
We shall see, I suppose.
Of course, Frandsen is also an option at third. Not a good one, but he’s in the mix.

In regards to Denker they would play him. If given no other choice Bochy has shown he will play a young one. As for Ochoa his asset his is glove. And he seems to be a lot less useful with it at second then at SS. At least that my rating of his abilities.

I think, though, that if given no other choice most people would do the only thing available to them. And the rest probably would too, because, well, they just want to be popular.

What it the limit of your interest in Ellis? Roughly how many years amount of money please.
I look at probably over 1k innings needing to be filled at third and Burriss ability to play a second ( if needed) and I am just not as fired up to find/import a second baseman. They get old too quickly once over 30 for my tastes. Though age 32 & 33 seasons should not be too bad of risk. I could get talked into it. I just am not convinced it’s a priority yet.

I don’t have specific numbers in mind, but I wouldn’t object to a moderately priced 2-year deal. He’s the sort of player who’ll likely be undervalued on the market, because he’s solid all around but not exceptional at any one thing. And, as pointed out below, his batting average was deceptively low this year. Of course, these factors also mean Sabean won’t be interested.

I'd definitely go after Ellis
He’s a lot better than that .233 avg. The Coliseum is an extreme pitchers park, LD’s tend to be gobbled up there, especially at night. He hits line drives, takes walks and provides GG defense…what more do you want?

This group
Is exactly why Sabean is looking to Trades and not the Free Agent Market. Aside from Texeria, I would only begrugingly take one of the forementioned guys. They all have question marks. None are a significant upgrade over what we have. They aren’t attractive to a team that’s rebuilding or to a team thats looking to compete.
I say pass, and look to the trade market for upgrades.
by dogdays on Oct 7, 2008 10:54 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I would say Tex and Ellis are the only guys worthy of a long term deal ( say 3 years of longer). Blake and Iztruis being below those two but a bit a head of the pack. The rest of these guys are stop gaps. Well with this being a rebuilding team we need stop gaps ( say 1-2 year contracts). The question is are any of these guys stop gaps this franchisee can use now with out shooting ourselves in our feet later? Would you – for example – really complain that much at say 6MM next year for Aurilia & Branyan to absorb like 1K innings at third?
As for trade they had better be thinking longer term with those. Sabean starts moving young arms for stop gaps and things are going to get mighty bad around here real fast.

My thoughts
should be prefaced by my assumption that in the trade market, a better, long term corner infielder (and maybe second baseman) will be acquired, therefore nullifying the need for any of the above players.
by dogdays on Oct 7, 2008 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It only nullifies the need for a stop gaps if the trade is already done. In fact having options with out needing the trade can make it easier to finish a long term trade because the other team is aware their leverage is less thus the price is less.

Why dismiss Tex so quickly?
Spending a lot of money on Teixeira makes more sense IMO than signing Sabbathia. Yes, I know you didn’t mentioned Sabbathia because this fanshot is about FA IFs, but there seemed to be quite a bit of support for signing him in a GRM fanpost. So if we’re throwing money around, to me, Tex makes more sense.
I don’t like any of the FA 3B options, so I would like to see Sabean make a trade. My preference would be Beltre if we could get him cheaply enough. Even without Tex, Beltre improves the team. I like Frandsen and Burriss up the middle, with either Tex at 1B and Sandoval at 3B, or Sandoval at 1B and Beltre at 3B.

For simplicity of discussion. I think we agree Tex is a very nice player. It would probably take Zito money , or better to sign him. So then we end up having to do a major budgetary talk. And with a new Managing Partner I don’t know how we could responsible talk about massive budget shifts. There is no track record to work from.
I do agree with the principle a team more often gets their money’s worth in production from major free agent position players then it does from major free agent pitchers.
The other thing a Tex, or CC, signing does is it probably reduces the Giants abilities to fill holes next winter when there looks to be more free agents that could be more then just pain sponges in the places we will probably need.
