Winter Lines 10/02

HWB: Waikiki 11, West Oahu 2

Giants Prospects:

LF Roger Kieschnick - 1-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 DO, .294

Other Waikiki Prospects:

DH Damon Sublett (Yankees) - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B (2), 4 RBI, 1 BB, .500

C Austin Romine (Yankees) - 2-3, 2 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB, .286

SP Yuhei Takai (Yakult) - 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, 0.00 ERA, W (1-0)

West Oahu Prospects:

CF Logan Schafer (Brewers) - 0-4, 2 SO, .250

LF Cyle Hankerd (Diamondbacks) - 1-4, 1 RBI, 2 SO, 1 E (1), .278

SP Fumikazu Kimura (Seibu) - 1 1/3 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 4 SO, 1 WP, 40.50 ERA, L (0-1)

Waikiki finally busted out in HWB play, scoring six runs in the bottom of the second inning en route to an 11-2 blowout win. The Beach Boys won their first game despite making five errors. The total was high for a game--the teams combined for eight errors. Tony Thomas of Waikiki made three errors by himself.

The CaneFires helped Waikiki's second inning rally with some poor defensive play. Damon Sublett drove in three runs on a base hit. The runs made it home safely when West Oahu's Miles Durham made a throwing error.

Roger Kieschnick has found a permanent spot in the lineup for Waikiki. He has appeared in all five games for the Beach Boys. His .294 batting average is third best among the regulars in the lineup.

Beach Boys starting pitcher Yuhei Takai held the CaneFires to three hits. The bullpen was excellent in relief of Takai. Jordan Pratt and David Pfeiffer, both from the Dodgers organization, combined for five innings of hitless pitching. Pratt allowed a run to score in the sixth inning on a wild pitch. He threw two wild pitches in the game.

Waikiki begins a three game series with North Shore tonight. North Shore is the only team in the league to feature players from the Korean Baseball Organization as well as Nippon Professional Baseball. A handful of Lotte Giants joined the Honu for 2008.

Arizona Fall League begins 10/06

Mexican Pacific League begins 10/11

Venezuelan League begins 10/14

Dominican League begins 10/15

Puerto Rican League begins 11/06, returning for 2008 after ceasing operations in the 2007 season

OK, I’m stumped: what does “2 DO” mean?

by Evan on Oct 3, 2008 9:12 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

He got 2 do-overs.

by chilibean_3 on Oct 3, 2008 9:20 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It should be 1 SO but the typo and the subsequent discussion is amusing. I won’t edit the post. I’d prefer to use the K symbol but we must remain in the proper format.

"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Not only says it - but insists upon it! ... Democracy is lovely, but baseball's more mature." BVCE supports SF Dugout and Manny Burriss.

Ah, probably a typo for strikeout.

by Evan on Oct 3, 2008 9:15 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Or Baron hasn’t gotten around to that part of the report yet but it’s on her “2 DO” list.

by Evan on Oct 3, 2008 9:15 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Or Kieschnick got hit on the head twice by flyballs, Canseco-style, and each time he said “Doh!”

by Evan on Oct 3, 2008 9:16 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Or two cute Hawaiian girls in the stands offered him dates.

by Evan on Oct 3, 2008 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Or, since this is the Baron’s story, two cute Hawaiian boys.

this I like

This has nothing to do with the Winter Lines...

…but I thought it was still awesome and needed to be shared. From BP:

Madison Bumgarner, LHP, Giants

Stats: +32 at Low-A (141.2-111-21-164); MBR: 0.23

As if one needed it, here is further evidence that last year’s first-round pick has established himself as one of the top pitching prospects in the game. Two aspects of Bumgarner’s game well exceeded expectations coming into the year. His command improved dramatically when, instead of worrying about Bumgarner’s natural three-quarters arm slot, the Giants instead simply worked on helping him find a consistent angle with it to enable him to throw more strikes. Beyond the wild success seen in his strike-throwing ability, his breaking ball went from a slurvy, looping offering to a real power downer that flashes plus at times, and shows the potential to become a big-league out pitch. Add that to this lefty’s plus to plus-plus velocity, and he has true impact potential.

+32 is just basically K-H-BB, with MBR being 32/IP for a ratio. The next time someone says that the Mad Bum doesn’t have anything other than a fastball, tell them to go fuck themselves. Or I guess you could just tell them they’re wrong, it’s really up to you and your style.

Power downer FTW!

I like the sound of that. “Power downer! Power downer!”

True. Much sexier than chanting “Slurvy, looping offering! Slurvy, looping offering!”

by Evan on Oct 3, 2008 3:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

OR

you can both tell them that they’re wrong AND to go fuck themselves. Seriously, so many fuckin people seem to be under the impression that he’s not good because he apparently can only throw a fastball. One guy at minorleagueball told me he shouldn’t be considered as a good prospect at all because some ass clown at BA said he thought his armslot would make it impossible to throw a breaking ball.

by boonitez on Oct 3, 2008 8:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

To be fair

The people on minorleagueball tend to have their heads so far up their own asses they can count the polyps in their colons.

fuckin tell me about it

ZNN ZNN LARS ANDERSON!!! ZZNN ZNN WHATEVER THAT OKAY METS PROSPECT THEY LIKE SO MUCH IS NAMED!! And the A’s fans on that site, too… Goddamn… One of them gave me shit for calling Posey a good prospect. Seriously. Buster Posey was in his mind an unproven shitty prospect. And another tried to convince me Lowry was a bad pitcher in his prime. To bad he couldn’t be more like Trevor Cahill or Brett Anderson or Michel Inoa.

Lars anderson is a RedSox prospect....

played Double A in Portland. Nice player; saw him a bunch of times vs the Defenders.

Better yet, Lars Anderson is a power-hitting 6’4" lefty firstbaseman, born in Oakland and attended Jesuit HS in Sacramento. He was chosen in the 18th round by the Red Sox in the 2006 Draft (they also drafted but did not sign Matt LaPorta in the 14th round and Ryan Kalish in the 9th round). Players the Giants drafted ahead of him include Clayton Tanner, Ben Snyder, Michael McBryde, Ryan Rohlinger, Brett Pill, Matt Klimas, Brian Bocock, Ryan Paul, Gib Hobson, Matt Weston, Brad Boyer, Eric Stolp, Andrew Barbosa, Paul Oseguera, Kevin Pucetas, and the immortal Jeff Stallings.

Ouch.

That list though..

You can make that list for 29 other teams.

Absolutely nothing (say it again)!

Am I mad, in a coma, or back in time? Whatever's happened, it's like I've landed on a different planet. Now, maybe if I can work out the reason, I can get home.

I know

I was refering to who I now remember is Fernando Perez. Lars Anderson is good; I just think they like him way too much.
