depends on if he’s actually a bargain.
I’d be super stoked if we got Crede on a one-year deal.

Crede on a cheap one-year deal would be a good risk to take.

Second this motion
When I say cheep I mean under 4MM. Under 4MM by wide margin. Keep in mind this a is a player that has not been able to take the field for 1k innings since ‘06 while playing for a A.L. team with a DH slot. He should not be counted on as not more then part of a rotation of 3 players for third.

Yeah, definitely, I’d have zero problem with that.

Yes
Especially since we won’t have to trade anything to get him. But what kind of pick would we give up for him?

I don’t think Sabean is smart enough to sign him to a short term deal. I worry that Boras will take him for the proverbial ride.

OK, but anything more than a 1 year deal for $4-6 million would be too much.

i feel fairly certain that he’ll get offers for more than that from someone. here’s hoping it’s not the Giants.

I presume we’re going to be thirdbasemanless a year from now as well, so if Crede’s value really is that low at the moment, I’d try to get an option year, or even a guaranteed second year. The deal the Phillies gave to Feliz would be fine.
Of course, the whole idea is dispiriting, given that Crede basically is Feliz, and we were all delighted to see Feliz leave town. But now we’ve seen how much worse things can get.

Is Crede really going to be available for cheap enough that it could be classified as a “flier” (or even a Flyer if you are a hockey fan from Philadelphia)? I would be all for it if he is, but I doubt it.

What are our FA options again?
I have this horrible feeling that we’ll be watching Casey Blake play 3b for the Giants next year.

Oddly I find that more comforting then Crede.
I don’t think Lorreta is a compensated free agent. At least he can play a Varity of positions and help out were ever needed when guys get hurt or young players struggle.

Yes, let’s sign a guy who has terrible injury problems and was never especially good to begin with. That sounds like a great idea.

Freeing up 1B for an open competition between Schierholtz (the Giants would be idiots to continue to not let him compete here), Ishikawa, and Bowker.

Knowing Boras,
I doubt they’d be able to get Crede for only a year, and would have to offer at least a two-year $10-12 million deal, rather than get him for a second-year option. And that alone makes it not worth it. The real question is whether it is better to go through 2009 with a Pablo/Burriss/Frandsen/Ishi infield and Bowker/Richie/Velez as backups while keeping all of your pitching for one more year; or making a play for infield help by trading Sanchez and Taschner now for one slot and getting a FA role player for another slot?
NO, we're not trading Matt Cain! What's that you say? We are? Armageddon is upon us!
by Buck Henry on Oct 29, 2008 10:36 AM PDT 0 recs
that would be kinda okay, but we still don’t have a backup SS

Maaaaaaybe a late 2nd round. If he has a decent year, probably nothing. He was below average last year.
