HWB: Waikiki v. North Shore, postponed
All the games in Hawaii Winter Baseball were rained out Sunday. The league has a scheduled off day Monday. Waikiki faces Honolulu for a three game series starting Tuesday.
The Arizona Fall league had its regularly scheduled Sunday off. Scottsdale plays the Peoria Javelinas Monday afternoon.
Mexican Pacific League:
Mexicali 9, Navajoa 3
Mexicali Giants Prospects:
C Todd Jennings - 0-3, 1 RBI, .188
Mexicali had no need for a closer in the 9-3 win over Navajoa. The Aguilas were up by six runs when Navajoa scored three runs in the seventh inning. Todd Jennings was part of a late three run rally for Mexicali. The catcher hit a sacrifice fly RBI in the eighth inning.
Mochis 3, Hermosillo 2
Hermosillo Giants Prospects:
SP Erick Threets - 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO, 1 E (1), L (1-1), 4.30 ERA
Mochis got to Erick Threets early, scoring three runs against him in his third start this winter. Hermosillo scored twice in a comeback attempt. Carlos Rodriguez hit two run homer for the Naranjeros. The bullpens settled down to secure the 3-2 Mochis win. There was a bit of wildness later in the game. Mochis designated hitter Matias Carrillo was ejected in the seventh inning after arguing a called third strike.
The league has Monday off. Mexicali faces Culiacan Tuesday while Hermosillo hosts Mazatlan.
Venezuelan Winter League:
Caracas 5, La Guaira 4
No Giants prospects appeared in this game. Caracas battled back from a 4-0 deficit in the seventh inning. Cesar Quintero walked with the bases loaded in the inning but the big hit came off the bat of Jesus Guzman. Two runs scored on Guzman's base hit. Josh Kroeger hit the go-ahead homer as the leadoff batter in the eighth inning.
Lara 9, Magallanes 8
Magallanes Giants Prospects:
1B Pablo Sandoval - 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B (3), 1 HR (2), 1 RBI, 2 SO, .458
Pablo Sandoval brought Magallanes within a run of Lara in the ninth inning with a home run, but the rally fell short. Lara scored three runs in the inning before Sandoval hit his home run. The Alfonzo family was featured in this game. Edgardo Alfonzo homered for Magallanes and Edgar Alfonzo pitched 2/3 innings in relief. Edgar, Edgardo's nephew, is in the Mets organization.
Zulia 7, Margarita 2
No Giants prospects played in this game. Brendan Katin broke a 1-1 tie with a three run homer. The blast put Zulia up for good. Zulia scored twice more in the fourth inning, one run on an error and one run on a bases loaded walk. Margarita committed five errors, two alone in the fourth inning.
Aragua 8, Caribes 7
Caribes Giants Prospects:
1B/C Eliezer Alfonzo - 2-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 SO, .278
SS Ivan Ochoa - 0-1, 1 BB, .167
RP Matt Palmer - 1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO, BS (1), L (0-1), 3.60 ERA
Caribes had to come back against Aragua but they lost the lead and then the game when Matt Palmer blew it in the ninth inning. Caribes scored six runs to go ahead in the sixth inning. Eliezer Alfonzo was part of the big rally, getting a base hit RBI with two outs. Alfonzo tried a new position in this game. He started the game at first before switching to catcher for defensive purposes in the ninth inning. Palmer, also trying on a new role as the Caribes' closer, allowed two runs in the ninth inning. It could have been three runs but Braves prospect Gorkys Hernandez nailed Abel Nieves trying to score from first base.
The league takes a break Monday.
Dominican Winter League:
Licey 11, Azucareros 3
PH/DH Angel Villalona - 0-2, 1 SO, .000
Licey won big against the home team in Azucareros. Jay Fox had four RBI in the game for Licey, including a two-run base hit in the fourth inning. Angel Villalona entered the game as a pinch hitter and did not get a hit in his winter ball debut. Former Giants friend/foe Armando Benitez pitched one scoreless inning for the Toros. Benitez also appeared in the winter leagues for the first time this season.
Both teams are off Monday.
Aguilas 15, Escogido 6
Escogido Giants Prospects:

Julio Mateo allowed seven runs in a brief start against Aguilas. Victor Santos pitched in relief of Mateo but did not fare much better, allowing five runs in 1 1/3 innings. Aguilas beat up on Escogido pitching, hitting three home runs against the Giants pitchers. It was part of tweleve runs scored before the fifth inning. Escogido tried to come back but six runs was not enough.
Agulias faces off against Gigantes on Monday while Escogido has the day off.
Gigantes 7, Estrellas 3
No Giants prospects played in this game. Gigantes had all the runs they needed by the end of the first inning. Juan Francisco and Sean Rodriguez hit home runs in the home half of the inning. Gigantes tacked on three more runs to extend the lead. It put off Estrellas' comeback effort. Michael Martinez doubled home Jose Reyes and then Wilkin Ruan scored on a sacrifice fly. Francisco Cruceta earned the win for pitching 1 2/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Estrellas is off Monday.
