If you could have one of them...
Luckily for me my mind allows me to dream about the what if's rather than being depressed by our sad team. The World Series has got me thinking... What if we could have one player from one of the teams in the WS for free. Who would it be?
Longoria or Utley are probably my two favorites but I can't say I would mind having Upton roaming CF at the booth or having Hamels or Price pitching between Lincecum and Cain.
So the question is, if you could have one player from either team and you didn't even have to trade away Cain or Timmy who would it be?

I said Utley
Longoria’s going to have to do it for more than 1 season for me to pick him.

Utley please.
Altho Longoria is probably a better bet long-term.
But I’m experiencing a man crush on utley recently.

Longoria based on upside and necessity of position. Heh, position.

Utley or Longoria
Chase is turning 30 this year. Evan turned 23 this month. In my hypothetical world I added on contracts and control years and went Evan Longoria. But picking one player for one game or series or year – i’d go with Utley.

Utley or Upton, maybe Longoria
I’d take Upton based on age and as much as I love Longoria, he doesn’t quite have Upton’s upside.

Clarification/Revision
It depends on what you’re looking for. If it’s for next year only, Utley would be the choice. If it’s for the long term, without caring about the way our team is currently structured or the cost, it’s Upton. If we consider team needs and contract status of the players, it’s Longoria.

Interesting that Upton isn’t getting much love in the poll…
What’s turning people away? Strikeouts? Attitude? Defense?
Or is it just that between Longoria and Upton, people prefer Longoria?

Speaking as someone who voted based on necessity, I’m guessing that’s what tipped the scales toward Longoria. Upton is a potential powerhouse, but there’s zero at third base here.

I agree that third base has been an offensive void for us since the Matt Williams trade (with a couple 20 HR seasons tossed in by Pete Happy and one by David Bell).
Normally, I’m pretty numbers oriented (mainly OBP), and don’t tend to drool like a scout over tools guys. But in the several games I’ve watched Upton in, I can’t get over how much pop he has. He’ll take a swing that looks like he was out on his front foot and didn’t square the ball up, and it’ll carry out of the yard. I think he wouldn’t have a problem getting them out of AT&T, or finding 421, and thinking about going inside the park.
Even so, if we had an outfield of Rowand, Upton plus whoever, would you be willing to live with a non-prototypical hitter at third like Frandsen or Velez? Maybe Pablo’s questionable D at the hot corner?

Yeah, he was nifty, but he hit more like the stereotypical 2B. The only reason this was tolerable was because Kent hit like a 3B. But if it were “Bad” Ray clunking around the keystone and hitting .218, it’d be an issue.
But I liked him too.

Wrong wrong wrong
126 (partial season), 112, 108 – 1996-1998 were Muellers sOPS+ (OPS compared to average 3B)
In 1999/2000 he was below average – maybe even bad – but he came back to have 3 solid years in Boston.

Evan Longoria
It isn’t just the Giants – outstanding 3Bmen are scarce. Getting a young superstar there would be my choice even if David Bell (the very definition of an average ML 3B) in his prime was still on our team.
I’d also like to have Upton, but that’s just being greedy. Oh, and btw I was/am a big Utley fan, and was constantly perplexed about the way the Phillies treated him at the beginning of his career; they basically Aurilia-ed him for 2-3 years, despite having no one better.
Am I mad, in a coma, or back in time? Whatever's happened, it's like I've landed on a different planet. Now, maybe if I can work out the reason, I can get home.
by Lyle on Oct 27, 2008 6:17 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
The Phillies problem was they were stuck with David Bell
and his contract.
They had 3 guys: Utley, Placido Polanco, Bell, and 2 positions: 3b and 2b. Bell had a big contract. They couldn’t bring themselves to just concede that Bell’s contract was a sunk cost. In the end, they settled for Utley and Bell, trading away Polanco.

I voted for Longoria, but would happily settle for Utley as a consolation prize. However, I angrily reject The Thrill’s description of our team as “sad.” I can’t wait for the start of spring training and the regular season. I don’t think we’re sad. I can’t wait to see Lincecum, Cain, Wilson,Sosa, Sanchez, Pablito, Nate, TI, and the great kids who probably will be going to Connecticut this season. Instead of being jealous of teams like the Rays, we should instead be thinking that in a couple of years we could be BETTER than teams like that, because not only do we have alot of talented kids, but we have money to spend on free agents and talented players who teams like the Rays won’t be able to afford to keep.

Don’t get me wrong. I am also excited about next year. However this year was sad. Watching the 126 million dollar man get slapped around, watching Velez play left field, and watching Bengie bat clean up all were sad and embarrasing. I can’t wait to get better and don’t think we are too far away. Especailly if we get Longoria or Utley for free.

I got to go other.
If we are losing nothing of importance I vote Rollins. Yes we would still have power issues. But our up the middle defense on offensive production just went through the roof.
Most fun would be Evan then B.J. Upton. Those two should be around and only getting better for a decade or more.

obviously I would love to have any of these guys, but forced to pick just one I think you have to go with Longoria. Great offensive and defensive 3Bs are extremely hard to find (as Lyle mentions above, not just for the Giants but for everybody), especially one that is already so great at age (barely) 23. I don’t share the concern that he has “only done it for 1 year” because he was such a highly touted college player and prospect that the good year does not seem like a fluke.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Oct 27, 2008 11:11 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Longoria over Utley. But it was close. Our pitching is set, Howard is eh, and our OF is crowded as sh*t. Utley’s good but he’s older than Longoria and his “power” will probably just hit off the top of the RF porch and bounce back.
