Winter Lines 10/21 and 10/22
10/21
HWB: Waikiki 8, West Oahu 5
Giants Prospects:
C Buster Posey - 3-5, 2 R, 1 2B (2), 4 RBI, 2 PB (7), .474
LF Roger Kieschnick - 1-4, 1 2B (3), 2 SO, .286
Other Waikiki Prospects:
1B Yonder Alonso (Reds) - 0-3, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 SO, .233
SP Andrew Brackman (Yankees) - 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO, 1 WP, W (2-3), 5.03 ERA
RP Jeremy Papelbon (Cubs) - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO, SV (2), 3.60 ERA
West Oahu Prospects:
CF Greg Burns (Marlins) - 2-4, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, .317
SP Cody Scarpetta (Brewers) - 3 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO, 1 HB, L (0-1), 12.00 ERA
RP Fumikazu Kimura (Seibu) - 3 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 12.71 ERA
Waikiki took the lead over West Oahu with a four run rally in the first inning. The Beach Boys got four consecutive hits before Austin Romine was hit by a pitch. Roger Kieschnick doubled home three runs. Romine's injury forced him out of the game. Buster Posey's return to Hawaii Winter Baseball turned out to be good timing, not just with the bat. Posey had an RBI single in the four run rally and drove in three more runs later in the game. If Romine's arm injury keeps him out of action, the Beach Boys can rely on Posey for offense at the catcher position.
Andrew Brackman has improved since his first start in Hawaii. Tuesday Brackman went five innings and gave up one run. The Yankees prospect allowed six runs in a 2 1/3 inning performance September 27 against Honolulu. In four starts since, he has allowed four runs and has struck out 17 batters.
AFL: Phoenix 10, Scottsdale 6
Giants Prospects:
SS Manny Burriss - 2-5, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 E (6), 1 SB (7), .333

1B Sean Doolittle (Athletics) - 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 SO, .233
SP Jeff Manship (Twins) - 3 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, 1 HB, 6.55 ERA
Other Scottsdale Prospects:
DH Drew Sutton (Astros) - 2-3, 2 R, 1 2B (3), 1 RBI, 1 BB, .600
CF Brian Bogusevic (Astros) - 2-3, 1 R, 2 RBI, .625
RP Michael Crotta (Pirates) - 1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 HR, BS (2), L (0-1), 9.64 ERA
Scottsdale was in control with a 6-1 lead going into the fifth inning. The bullpen collapsed, allowing nine runs to give Phoenix the win. Robert Mosebach and Michael Crotta allowed four runs each, both unlucky in this game. Only one of Mosebach's runs was earned and Crotta got the blown save and the loss in the decision. The Scorpions committed four errors. Two of the errors led to the meltdown. Manny Burriss and Kevin Frandsen made the critical errors, both on fielding misplays. Desert Dogs catcher JP Arencibia was ejected in eighth inning for arguing with the home plate umpire.
Mexican Pacific League:
Guasave 3, Mexicali 2
Mexicali Giants Prospects:
C Todd Jennings - 0-2, 1 BB, .200
Mexicali lost a close game against Guasave. The Aguilas tied the score in the fifth inning when Derrick White walked with the bases loaded. Todd Jennings was out at home on a force play in the at-bat prior to the walk. That run could have made the difference in the final score.
Hermosillo 8, Obregon 5
Hermosillo Giants Prospects:
SP Erick Threets - 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR, 1 WP, 1 HB, W (1-0), 4.66 ERA
RP Justin Hedrick - 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 9.00 ERA
It was a day of firsts on Tuesday for the Giants on the Naranjeros squad. Erick Threets got his first win in the Mexican League for 2008. Threets is trying to model himself as a starter, with four starts at the end of 2008 with Fresno and two starts in the Mexican Pacific League. Justin Hedrick made his first winter appearance, going one inning and allowing one run. Hermosillo hit two home runs to secure their win over Obregon. Luis Garcia and Jose Luis Sandoval almost went back to back in the fourth inning. Juan Canizalez walked after Garcia homered and then scored on Sandoval's shot.
Venezuelan Winter League: Magallanes 9, Margarita 2
Margarita Giants Prospects:
PH/3B Julio Cordido - 0-1, 1 SO, .000
Magallanes Giants Prospects:
DH Pablo Sandoval - 2-4, 1 3B (1), 3 RBI, .500
Julio Cordido entered the game as a pinch hitter for Margarita. The Bravos got two runs on four hits in the loss to Magallanes. Pablo Sandoval had three RBI for Magallanes in his Venezuelan Winter League debut. Sandoval hit a triple that scored Edgardo Alfonzo.
Dominican Winter League: Estrellas 5, Escogido 2
Escogido Giants Prospects:
SP Julio Mateo - 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO, 0.90 ERA
Julio Mateo has pitched very well for Escogido. In two starts Mateo has allowed one run. Mateo only made six starts in 2008 with AAA Fresno, out of 31 appearances. Tuesday Mateo went six innings but got the no-decision when Estrellas won the game in the ninth inning. Wilton Veras did it in style: he hit a three-run walkoff homer.
10/22
HWB: Waikiki 9, West Oahu 8
Giants Prospects:
DH Buster Posey - 1-2, 2 R, 1 HBP, .476
LF Roger Kieschnick - 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, .292
Other Waikiki Prospects:
1B Yonder Alonso (Reds) - 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR (3), 2 RBI, .234
RF Alfredo Silverio (Dodgers) - 2-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, .250
SP Yuhei Takai (Yakult) - 4 2/3 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 4 SO, 2 HR, 5.40 ERA
West Oahu Prospects:
LF Cyle Hankerd (Diamondbacks) - 3-5, 2 R, 1 2B (2), 2 HR (2), 5 RBI, .309
SP Tim Bascom (Orioles) - 4 1/3 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR, 1 HB, L (1-2), 6.48 ERA
RP Sean Gleason (Orioles) - 1 2/3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO, 1 WP, 7.32 ERA
The Beach Boys held off Cyle Hankerd to win by a run. Hankerd had five RBI alone in this game, hitting two home runs. Waikiki rallied for five runs in the fourth inning. Buster Posey started the rally when he was hit by a pitch and he scored on Todd Frazier's double. Roger Kieschnick walked and scored in the inning as well.
Yuhei Takai did not factor into the decision, allowing five runs over 4 2/3 innings. The opposing starting pitcher Tim Bascom took the loss in a similar poor outing, with seven runs allowed in 4 1/3 innings.
The league takes a break Thursday and then it's back to action Friday. Waikiki travels to North Shore for a three game series beginning Friday.
AFL: Mesa 11, Scottsdale 3
Giants Prospects:
SS Manny Burriss - 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 SO, .327
CF Ben Copeland - 1-4, 1 3B (3), 1 RBI, 2 SO, .267
3B Ryan Rohlinger - 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR (2), 1 RBI, 2 SO, .267
RP Kelvin Pichardo - 2/3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO, 1 WP, 1 HB, 9.00 ERA
RP Alex Hinshaw - 1 1/3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 4.91 ERA
Other Scottsdale Prospects:
LF/3B Drew Sutton (Astros) - 1-3, 1 2B (4), 1 BB, 1 SO, .571
C Mark Wagner (Red Sox) - 2-4, 1 2B (1), 1 SO, .250
SP Clay Buchholz (Red Sox)- 4 1/3 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, L (1-1), 2.92 ERA
Mesa Prospects:
RF Scott Cousins (Marlins) - 1-4, 2 R, 1 2B (2), 4 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO, .212
1B Logan Morrison (Marlins) - 5-5, 2 R, 1 RBI, .423
SP Luis Marte (Tigers) - 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 SO, 2 WP, W (1-1), 7.88 ERA
Scottsdale lost second game in a row, again due to bad relief pitching. Mesa broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning, scoring two runs. Ben Copeland put the Scorpions on the board with an RBI triple in the home half of the inning. Ryan Rohlinger homered in the seventh inning, a leadoff solo shot. By the time Rohlinger hit his second homer of the fall season, Mesa was already ahead by five runs. Kelvin Pichardo allowed three runs in relief of Clay Buchholz, in the five-run fifth inning for the Solar Sox. Alex Hinshaw struggled in 1 1/3 innings a well, allowing three base hits. Manny Burriss has committed errors in two straight games. Logan Morrison was the hitting star for Mesa with five hits.
Scottsdale plays Mesa again Thursday.
Mexican Pacific League: Mexicali 8, Guasave 7
Mexicali Giants Prospects:
C Todd Jennings - 0-3, 1 SO, 1 E (2), .182
RP Sergio Romo - 1 2/3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, SV (4), 0.00 ERA
Mexicali held on to defeat Guasave by a run. Sergio Romo still hasn't allowed a run pitching as Mexicali's closer. Romo went long to get his fourth save of the winter season. Todd Jennings had a tough day both at the plate and behind the plate. Jennings went hitless and committed an error.
This series concludes Thursday with Mexicali hosting Guasave,
Hermosillo 10, Obregon 2
No Giants prospects played in the win over Obregon. The Naranjeros took a shutout into the ninth inning. Jayson Nix hit a double and would score in the inning to put Obregon on the board. Juan Canizalez hit two home runs for Hermosillo.
Hermosillo and Obregon play once more in this series Thursday.
Venezuelan Winter League:
Magallanes 6, Caribes 5
Magallanes Giants Prospects:
DH Pablo Sandoval - 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, .375
Caribes took a big lead against Magallanes with a four run fourth inning, but Magallanes came back with their own four run rally. Pablo Sandoval had another RBI, bringing in the game-winning run on a fielder's choice.
These two teams match up again Thursday.
Margarita v. Aragua, postponed
Margarita's game against Aragua was called off due to rain. Margarita faces Lara Thursday and Aragua plays La Guaira.
Dominican Winter League: Azucareros 7, Escogido 2
Escogido Giants Prospects:
RP Steve Hammond - 2/3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO, 8.10 ERA
RP Roberto Novoa - 2/3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO, 1 HR, 7.71 ERA
Escogido was almost shut out against Azucareros. The Leones scored two runs in the seventh inning but it was not enough to catch up to the Toros. Steve Hammond has made two appearances in the winter league in Venezuela as a reliever. Hammond's second outing Wednesday was rough on him and his ERA, allowing three runs in 2/3 innings. Roberto Novoa gave up a run in the loss. Novoa hadn't allowed a run in two appearances before Wednesday.
Escogido is off Thursday.
Puerto Rican League begins 11/06, returning for 2008 after ceasing operations in the 2007 season

Julio Mateo is no longer with the Giants, right? Ben Copeland, dude hits triples! And its kinda shitty that the Giants voided Mateo’s contract cause of bone spurs.
I'm young but i didn't fall off the truck yesterday!
Ummm, stupid is as stupid said. It was Luis Mateo that got the contract voided not Julio, sorry!

Nah, but I figured I’d add Mateo in there just in case anyone wanted to know his status.

Posey makes an apperance!
Eugeniooooooo!!!!
I love how it kills Rotoworld to say anything positve about a Giants player
Pablo Sandoval went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI for Magallanes of the Venezuelan Winter League on Friday.
Edgardo Alfonso, Sandoval and Richard Hidalgo all homered while batting 3-4-5 in the lineup. The Giants have to be especially excited to see Sandoval producing while hitting between washed up has-beens. He’ll surely fit right into Brian Sabean’s future plans.
I can almost picture them crying when typing this.

Can it be possible that I can once again get my Edgardo Alfonzo jersey out of the back of the closet and wear it proudly??

Didn't you read the post?
I just calmly said he can’t play third. Perhaps second though.

Fantastic job, Baron!
Other than failing to tell us Cody Scarpetta’s favorite pie, and what’s on Roger Kieschnick’s iPod, you pretty well covered it all.
Merci beaucoup!
Am I mad, in a coma, or back in time? Whatever's happened, it's like I've landed on a different planet. Now, maybe if I can work out the reason, I can get home.
lol
Anyone remeber when experts had the Giants taking Brackman. Im glad they decided to go with Bumgarner, who is now like a top 20 porspect or whatever he is.
I see the future, and it is Pablo
I was really adamant against Brackman. Some people are still high on him, but I’m not convinced.

He’s a big dude with a good heater but he never really dominated college baseball. Also, he had to have TJ coming out of the draft, which everyone pretty much knew about. It’s not a bad pick for the Yankees who had cash to burn but I’m not sure how well he would work out for most other teams.
