Changing Ballpark Dimensions

Outside of Barry Bonds and Jeff Kent, the Giants have had a serious power shortage ever since they moved out of Candlestick.  Now the Giants probably won't change the park's layout but almost anything would improve the HR total.

I have my thoughts on this but I'm more interested in yours, so as a starter question, do you like the current layout of the 3rd Street Yard?  I like the layout, but worry that long term the FA hitters aren't going to want come here unless we over pay for them.

Pitchers seem to like it but will a pitching dominant team mean a world series?  Would slight park adjustments make it closer to what seems to dominate the ball parks of the rest of the country (outside the NL West)?

Our park factors have consistently been around 1 for HR and runs. There is nothing wrong with the park.

according to that chart, its never been above 1 for homers and the only 2 times its been close (over .9) were the two years without Bonds (2005, 2008). Tt averaged under .8 for homers over the last 7 years. its also only been above 1 for runs twice as well, though the average is close to 1 at .96. In recent years, though, it has been much closer to 1 than in the earlier years in the park. Not surprisingly, it is a great yard for hitting doubles and triples.

Bonds stands alone.

Honestly

Players who complain about the park layout are the biggest pussies in the world.

Seriously, It’s a fucking baseball park. They are all basically the same, and if the wall being 20 feet farther in some spots keeps you from hitting as many ZOMG HOMRUNZ you probably aren’t that great of a player anyway.

So man the fuck up and play some baseball.

The Giants power drought is because of the players, not because of the park. If Rich fuckin Aurilia can hit 37 HR’s in this park in 2001, it’s not the park.

I just had the craziest thought ever!

You know how both competing teams play a game in the same stadium? Well, that means the dimensions of the ballpark don’t really favor one team over the other, in terms of hitting! What favors one team more than the other is… Drum roll please… Better hitting!

So obviously, bringing in the fences is the only solution that will possibly make the Giants winners again. It’s as Anne as the nose on Plain’s face.

Christ, must we really discuss this stupid dead issue again?

you say:

Outside of Barry Bonds and Jeff Kent, the Giants have had a serious power shortage ever since they moved out of Candlestick.

which you are completely wrong about.
In 2002 the Giants became the first team in NL history (I think) to have 6 players hit 15 or more HRs, including power hitting studs like David Bell who hit 20. In 2002, the Giants were 2nd in the NL in HRs in a year where Bonds hit a fairly modest 46. This is after leading the NL in HRs in 2001 (the year Bonds hit 73 of course) and being 3rd in the NL in 2000.

The Giants have not had “a serious power shortage” since moving into the new park. What they have had is a complete lack of power hitters the last several years.

Now can we please drop this discussion and move on to Cain for a power hitter trade proposals?

The years you mention also happen to be years where Kent & Bonds were hitting in the line up

And if you have power hitters in front of you, you’re going to come up with runners on base when they get walked. Conversely you’re going to see better pitches if they are hitting behind you.

Main point of the arguement is

1. We need better hitters
2. Knowing that the Giants won’t produce these better hitters by draft, trade, or FA, they should do something to give themselves a better shot of winning.
3. I’m hoping it will be pitching but I’m realistic enough to think that something field wise will be changed.

Down in Front Meat!

But the other team’s hitters will still be better than ours. There’s still a talent gap that will lead to losses.

by groug on Oct 23, 2008 11:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Here's the crux of your point:

You don’t think the Giants can get better hitters, so you think they should fuck up the park to inflate home run totals for the home team. Never minding the fact that the visiting team will enjoy the same benefits as the home team, thus eliminating any sort of competitive advantage the Giants may have enjoyed.

It all goes back to the same damn counter-argument. The Giants need better hitters. They don’t need to muck up the ballpark so you can see the water cannons fire off a couple more times a year.

Build the team as you can.

This ballpark isn’t going to play as a power ballpark without amazing hitters in the first place. So you build a doubles team. We have big gaps so if you hit it there, you get a double, in RC you get a triple. Build to that. Have OF that can learn the wall, learn the gap, learn how to position yourself.

Beauty in that is that on the road a few of your doubles turn into HR, but otherwise your doubles stay. And then you still have a good defensive OF on the road.

That’s the dumbest fucking thing I’ve seen you say on this board. And you’ve said a lot of dumb stuff. I will now boil down you’re stupid argument to the core essence of the idiocy you’re sharing on this site:

“The Giants can’t build a winner because they haven’t won the World Series in 55 years. They can’t win the World Series because they don’t have enough power. This failure of 55 years is obviously the fault of ATT Park. Therefore, the only way the Giants can ever win a World Series is not by making a better team, but by shortening the distance between home plate and the outfield walls. This will fix our power shortage of recent years, and will completely fix the gap between the Giants and the better teams.”

Congratulations, you’ve actually outdone yourself in terms of making a case for a retarded point of view.

There is no need to move in the fence nor any other gimmicky chicanery, smarter hitters is the cure to this red herring of a topic. Barry Bonds was a smart hitter, unlike every other dope who swaggers into town in their road greys only to be shocked, I say shocked, when on that first Friday evening their booming shot out too 420 results in a long fly out, these hitters should take a tip from the home run king and, you know, not be stupid hitters. DUH. Study the park and how it plays, and you may be able to figure some shit out. Every game we hear Kruk or Kuip say “that would have been a home run in every other park.” If these big lumbering galloots were smarter hitters, they may have different results.

by satyricrash on Oct 23, 2008 2:57 PM PDT reply actions

Smarter hitters???

I don’t think we really see a benefit from that. Look, the only way the Giants truly get an advantage is to move in the fences, particularly in right field. Personally, I think all fences should be moved in to 200 feet. That’s the only way to solve the home run crisis this team is suffering through. And it’s the surest bet to getting back to the World Series!

But other are right, too, that the answer to the power drought isn’t bringing in the fences. It’s getting more power hitters. Frankly, righthanders shouldn’t have a problem hitting homers here. RH power hitters are the type of guys we need to get.

I haven't advocated bringing the walls in

If anything we should move the diamond closer to them to keep the outfield the same (geometrically) and maybe it’s a 408 alley vs 421 alley

Down in Front Meat!

Shouldn't and Can't

Shouldn’t:

Moving the plate would move the fans further from the game. The Giants sold Charter Seat Licenses just a decade ago on how close fans would be to the game. Moving the plate would upset those fans, and primarily the highest-paying ones. Between not having Bonds-the-meal-ticket and the recession, pissing off those that can afford to pay exorbitant amounts of money is a bad, bad idea.

Can’t:

Baseball has a minimum distance rule for the outfield: 325 to the lines, 400 to the center field wall. The Giants received a special exemption for right field due to the unusual plot of land they got the stadium on (They got the exemption because Baseball wanted a new park desperately in SF, because the Giants agreed on the extra-high wall to make up for it, and baseball recognized the unique draw of the Splash Hit). Right field aside, all it would take is 10 feet to make left field too short, and just one foot to make center field ineligible.

Moving the plate won’t be an option.

Stadiums that 'violate' the rules, built or first used after 1958

Quite a few, but not ‘dozens.’

Aside from AT&T Park, of course:

Sicks’ Stadium (Seattle) – 305 in left, 320 in right; One-year home of the M’s while the Kingdome was built.
Tropicana Field (Tampa) – 315 in left, 322 in right; Existing stadium the Rays moved into and MLB has said ‘needs’ to be replaced.
Minute Maid Park (Houston) – 315 in left; Compensated for with a high wall. Lot size issue?
Petco Park (San Diego) – 396 in center, 322 in right; Other outfield dimensions are ginormous.
Camden Yards (Baltimore) – 318 in right; Lot size exemption, high wall compensation.
Kingdome (Seattle) – Originally 315 in left and right; Higher than normal wall around the stadium (at least 18 feet down both lines).
PNC Park (Pittsburgh) – 399 in center; Odd angle in center, but no obvious reason or compensation, though it is just one foot off.

Of the eight, the only three I don’t understand would be PNC, Petco and the Kingdome. The Kingdome’s configuration was changed often, though the right field line would always violate the rules (the left field line was eventually moved past 325 feet). WIth PNC…I just don’t know. I wonder if the field was originally estimated for 400 but they remeasured when built and something was off. And Petco…well, the dimensions don’t exactly help hitters, though the right field line just has the one section jutting out, so the rest of right isn’t that shallow.

Ok..

Not dozens but yea, I still don’t think that the rule is really enforced. I think that the size of the field is generally garnered by the lot size, and if you can generally fit a baseball diamond there, then you’ll put it there and change little things to fit it there.

Do you realize then you’re moving the foul poles also (unless you’re planning on changing the 45* angle to a wider angle at home plate. Then you have something like a 390 CF wall. That is crazy close.

"Pitchers seem to like it but will a pitching dominant team mean a world series?"

Yes? Did the Brewers or White Sox make the series? No. The two teams with insane rotations did. Pitching counts most in the playoffs, and it’s certainly a great strategy for winning in the regular season. And I don’t get why people want to move the fences in so badly. They seem to be forgetting that if we moved them in, it would infact help the teams we play against too.

Also lol at anyone considering the Phillies rotation insane. Cole Hamels, insane. Everyone else, insane in the membrane maybe, but probably not even average, much less insanely good.

exactly

They were built on pretty much all offense, which was my point. It’s extremely important to have a good rotation, especially in the playoffs. If we were trying to win a world series, building a great pitching staff would be a very smart thing to do. And also, the Phillies rotation is pretty insane. Cole Hamels, Brett Myers (who has been much better recently), Jamie Moyer, Joe Blanton? Pretty excellent 1-2-3-4 right there.

by boonitez on Oct 23, 2008 6:43 PM PDT up reply actions

A smart, winning organization

will build a team tailored to its home park, thus giving it an advantage over the visiting opponents, and the best chance to have the upper hand for at least 1/2 of its games.

For the denizens of AT&T Park, that means designing a lineup with hitters who are not lumbering hulks regularly swinging for the fences, unless, of course, that hitter is surnamed Bonds. I think the Giants are somewhat moving in the right direction, drafting good hitters with gap power (e.g. Posey, Gillaspie) who can muscle up and hit the ball out of bandbox stadia when the game situation calls for it. Pablito is another hitter who seems to be well suited to AT&T Park. It remains to be seen if and how Villalona will fare in Mays Field, but early reports suggest he has the power to hit the ball out of any park.

I am anxiously awaiting the 2009 June draft to see if the Giants remain true to their stated goal of building a team built around speed and defense (and GOOD, not necessarily POWER, hitting).

So rather than build your park around your team to mask its weaknesses (while perhaps accentuating the strengths of your opponent), it is better to build your team to fit your park.

If the dimensions were to be changed it should only be in right-center, cutting off part of triple’s alley, which, with the high wall, is ridiculous. The weather at night. when most of the games are played, makes the 421 play even deeper. There should be a way to put a chain link fence in front of the three archways closest to the center-field wall in away that it would not really mess with the architecture of the park.

I love the dimensions.

Really, the only place where you can make a difference in RC field. RF can just have a horrible wind coming in and only Bonds can split through it. In RC you can pull the fences in and get some more HR. But I think it’s more of an advantage to have a few outs made a year with long HR and gain the advantage of Winn/Schierholtz playing a ball perfectly off the wall and limiting a player to less bases/getting an outfield assist. You also get the opposing RF misplaying a ball and giving our players extra bases.
