Stupid Rumor of the Day: Yanks Interested in Rowand
This makes no sense.
One player that the Giants have long coveted is Hideki Matsui. If you remember, last winter, media reports circulated that the Yanks were prepared to send "Godzilla" to San Francisco in exchange for two pitchers. Since Matsui is coming off an injury plagued season, one in which he appeared in just 93 games, it is highly doubtful that he would be traded straight up for the energetic and tough-as-nails Rowand, who is three years younger. Matsui is also in the final year of a four year deal, and would most likely want an extension if he is traded, although he has stated that he would most likely retire after the end of his current contract.

I wish it would happen
I’d do it just to get rid of Rowands contract. Matsui will probably play in just half the games next year but I’d take one injury plagued year by him than 4 below average years by Rowand.

You are right. It makes no sense.
1) The Matsui rumors for 2 Giants pitchers last year were clearly wishcasting by Yankee reporters and fans. There was never any indication of interest by the Giants.
2) Matsui has never been “long coveted” by the Giants.

They are obviously underestimating Rowand’s gamerness value to the Giants

I agree.
Also I liked how they threw a trade for Matt Cain near the bottom of the article.

The headline lives up to its name!
Although I like stupid more than I like Aaron “Scott” Rowand.

Actually, I think the Cano for Cain thing down at the bottom is even stupider than Matsui for Rowand.

It’s two stupid trades in one article. Can’t get any better than that.

Oddly enough, the article he uses to explain his case for Cano-Cain also includes this:
Oh, and any Giants fan reading this who thought the Cain for Prince Fielder and JJ Hardy rumor was legit should stop reading now because you’re obviously too stupid to understand the basic parameters of the sport.
We’re building a stupid trade hierarchy here.

wow, another Cain and Abel (able) joke. What a clever writer.
That double standard got me pretty mad. In the same paragraph where he says that (Sorry, don’t know how to put the quotes in those sweet gray boxes) “It’s almost to the point where it’s so logical that I’m going to be justifiably cranky for a week when it doesn’t happen…” he goes on to say the possibility of us dreaming is stupid (not that I ever thought that trade proposal was possible, but it’s not like Giants fans were out yelling about how they’d be upset if we DIDN’T get that trade). In my opinion, Cano for Cain is almost (not quite, but close to) as bad as a Cano for Cain swap. Cano never has a chance to be the hitter Utley does, it’s ridiculous how much players from the Major Leagues (boston and NY) get overhyped and how much their farm teams (the rest of the majors) get undervalued

And then he doesn’t even explain why that speculation is stupid. Good job, him.
In a way, Cain for Cano does sound like a classic Sabean thread. Logically, trading for Cano should be a case of buying low, because he’s coming off his worst season where he posted a sub-90 OPS+, but giving if he gave up Cain, he’d be behaving as though he were buying high. Classic post-2002 Sabean action there.

I would actually be totally in favor of buying low on cano, now that i think about it. of course, as you said, no way that’s cain. but i could see both the yanks and sox being interested in molina…maybe cano could be part of a molina to the yanks trade… just thinking out loud, no idea if that would actually work or who would have to throw in prospects.

I like how your thinking.
The draw back I see to that is Cano is really the one position player they have under 30. Melky has not shown he can play well as an every day player. The next youngest is Nady at age 30 net year then ARod at 33 next season.

Just cause its dream casting and it is the Yanks ( Lord knows what a Steinbrenner will do) I was digging around to see who else to pair up if Betemit to add to the INF meat grinder that is S.F. and Fresno. I see Eric Duncan has 6 years of minor league service and is not on the Yanks 40. Rule V anyone? Go Fetch Sabs!!

I think the Cain for Delmon Young, straight up, rumor that’s going around is worse.

Lets see ...
The last time Sabean traded a man off the 25 man for a minor leaguer was Durham for Hammond. He has 1 more year of protection in the minors so he might still be with us come April. Before that Sweeny for Denker who last a total of 15 months and was out righted. Before that Russ Ortiz for others and Merkin. I think we can presume Sabean doesn’t do the trade for others prospects thing. Yet some how he is going move a legit top of the rotation pitcher (one of the rarest of player types) for a prospect?
Yea that’s some were beyond stupid. And know I really don’t need to know were beyond stupid it is.

The Giants wouldn’t do that last year, so I don’t see why they’d do it this year. Unless you think the Rays preffered Garza to Cain and never asked about Cain, which can’t be true.

i'd take it
for the same reason as in post #1.
I mean, Matsui has one year left, right? and maybe he’ll, um, well, no one said he had to be a starter/regular…. he can still hit a little.
move him to third base!

If I may be the Rowand apologist in the room…
2008: Roughly 15th in RC among all CF in MLB. I don’t know where to find the actual average CF’s hitting, but I’ll guess 68 RC is about 10 runs below average, a full win, which is also where I’d be inclined to judge his true talent level for the next couple years. Toriiiiiii Hunter was a league average CF hitter last year at about 80 RC with the bat.
But CrashFace is also a consensus top defensive CF in baseball, and I’m not too afraid he’ll fall off defensively over the life of the contract. If he’s still a top defender, 1 to 2 wins above average, his expected seasons are slightly above league average in sum. In that light, he’s clearly being overpaid, and even overpaid for a free agent.
HOW-EVA! When he puts it all together, as he’s shown he can do, he’s one of the best players in the game and a bargain at 12 per. If he does it once during the contract, he’s liable to make up whatever overpaidness he’s puts up in the other seasons.
All that said: Trade him for flexibility and better contracts. If someone wants to give up a league average 3B, take it, because we’ve got a league average CF in Randy Winn.
Is anyone else up for the Ty Wigginton experience? Is Adrian Beltre too much to hope for? I’d make that trade in a heartbeat, former Dodger status notwithstanding.
by David Arnott on Oct 23, 2008 12:47 PM PDT 0 recs
Next winter there is what Beltre, Figgins, Wigginton, and then Mora and Tracy slated the hit the free agent market? That’s assuming the Braves don’t let Chipper become a free agent. Pretty much any of those ( save maybe Mora ) would be a large upgrade at third.
