OT: Open Music thread (and PSA)
There was a music thread on this site a while back, and a lot of people recommended a band called Of Montreal. I listened, got into them, and went to see them a couple weeks ago in DC. And holy crap, what an awesome show! It was one of the best concerts I've been to. So first of, thanks to the McCoven, and second of all:
Public Service Announcement: they are playing in SF in November, and I believe tickets are still available. If you like them, you should definitely go, because their live show is amazing. In that sense, they remind me a fair amount of one of my long time favorite bands, the Flaming Lips. There are lots of bizarre stage antics that get the crowd really into their shows, including people in animal suits. And I'm not sure I've ever seen a crowd as into a show as the crowd was at that one.
But enough about that. It's been a while since I've seen a music thread on here, so I think we need one for the coming baseball-less autumn months. What is everyone here into these days? I haven't gotten much new music of late and can always use some recommendations. Other new (to me) music I've been listening to:
Secret Machines (whose third album just came out)
Animal Collective (ultra-weird but fun and interesting)
Beirut (whom I'd highly recommend)
M.I.A. (in my opinion, a mix of some really great songs and some unlistenable songs).

I still listen to Nick Cave… a lot. Probably more than I should.
Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and The National have also gotten heavy play the last few weeks. Nothing new to me, but all stuff I really love. I’ve been getting into PJ Harvey over the last couple months as well.
I’ve finally started messing around with my last.fm recommendations and I have to say, I’m pretty impressed with how they’ve improved that system. They recced this band called Mansun to me over the weekend and inspired me to acquire their album “Attack of the Grey Lantern”, which I really liked.
I really like Fleet Foxes debut self-titled album, I’ve been meaning to get the EP they released this year as well.
I’ve also had a bit of a renaissance in my love for Lou Reed’s Berlin, which might be the greatest concept album of all time. I really need to pick up the live album of that which was just released a few weeks ago.
I’m trying to branch out more, though. I love Beirut, by the way.

And I’ve kind of noticed Nick Cave popping up in your playlist a lot. I couldn’t help but notice though….YOU LISTEN TO RUSH.

that's OK
it says that you and I have Modest Mouse in common, and I have never (knowingly) listened to a MM song on purpose.
Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.
Polly Jean is one of the greats
her albums have great lasting power… Dry still sounds revolutionary to me.
Psycho killer, qu'est-ce que c'est?
Most recent albums I like:
T.I. – Paper Trail
Lil Wayne – Carter 3
DJ Khaled – We Global
don’t laugh but New Kids on the Block – The Block CD is pretty good.
Nelly – Brass Knuckles was OK
The Game – L.A.X. was OK
I expected Ne-Yo’s The Year of the Gentlemen to be better.
I can’t wait until November and December when Eminem, Ludacris, T-Pain, Kanye West, and Akon all come out with CD’s.
Favorite songs right now:
T-Pain – “Freeze” ft. Chris Brown
T-Pain – “Superman”
Akon – “I’m So Paid” ft. Young Jeezy and Lil Wayne
Kanye West – “Love Lockdown” and “Heartless”
T.I. – “My Life, Your Entertainment” ft. Usher and “On Top of the World” ft. Ludacris
New Kids – “Put it on My Tab” ft. Akon
Ne-Yo – “She Got Her Own” ft. Jamie Foxx and Fabolous
Ludacris – “Call Up the Homies” ft. The Game and Willy Northpole
Ludacris and T-Pain – “One More Drink” and “Chopped and Screwed”
Lil Wayne – “Mr. Carter” ft. Jay-Z and “Love Me or Hate Me”
If you like good dance beats, try out those songs.

Um...
The Beatles, Zepp, the Doors, the Who, Hendrix and Sabbath are my favorites.
Yes, much more my speed
I’m a fan of all of those, except for Black Sabbath – which I never got into. For me, Stevie Ray Vaughan would be at the top of that list. The list would also include The Fabulous Thunderbirds, The Eagles, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Robert Cray, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Most of the 70s Motown sound, and much more.
Lynyrd Skynyrd?

Skynyrd..
I’ll only listen occasionally. I like them, but not enough I guess.
The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:
"We could run a nice blog here if we didn't have all these members getting in the way."
I’ve never understood how Skynyrd are so much more popular than the Allman Brothers. They’re pretty similar, except the Allmans are better in every single way (better singer, better rhythm section, much better guitars – Allman/Betts > any guitar duo, better and more diverse songs). Weird.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
I don’t know that Skynyrd is more popular outside of their two huge songs. They just had those catchy famous things that have become standards for whatever reason, and the Allman Brothers didn’t.
Trent Kline: Decentish. Also, my website is called ChatterBalks Dot Com. It's not being updated right now. Hope for more at your own risk.
Simple, KFC didn’t use The Allman Brothers for their commercials. Thus, Skynyrd will always be better.

but I’m about as far from an idiot redneck, as they come. I also like The Allman Brothers Band. I don’t understand all of the animosity between LS and ABB fans. Whatever – I like them both.
I also like CSN, CSN&Y, Bob Dylan, The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Marley, Bonnie Raitt, Jimmie Vaughan, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, CCR, Janis Joplin, Santana, and U2 – just to name a few.
Lately
My BART ride playlists have included a lot of Flogging Molly, Social Distortion and Guster along with the regulars Foo Fighters, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Weezer and many others.
Giants! Giants! HELP US GOD!
I’ve really been digging the new Jenny Lewis album lately. Earlier this year, I quite like Porishead’s album as well as the new album by Kathleen Edwards (highly recommended if the whole alt-country thing appeals to you at all). Other good albums so far this year include the ones by Flight of the Conchords, Destroyer, She & Him, Joan As Police Woman, Sons & Daughters, and Tilly and the Wall.
Here was my top ten albums list from 2007:
1) The New Pornographers, Challengers
2) The Arcade Fire, Neon Bible
3) PJ Harvey, White Chalk
4) Tegan & Sara, The Con
5) Feist, The Reminder
6) Jesca Hoop, Kismet
7) Radiohead, In Rainbows
8) Lily Allen, Alright, Still…
9) Stars, In Our Bedroom After the War
10) Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, Raising Sand

Well everyone around here knows me as the closed minded young-un who listens to old-fart music.
Wow..long title..Anyways I’ve been listening to music a lot more now it seems, and I’ve started to scrobble also. Probably listening to more music since I’ve gotten some more CDs and picked up a few more bootlegs. My main pleasures are Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and Pink Floyd. The latest CDs I picked up are The Traveling Wilburys Collection, A Saucerful of Secrets, and Meddle. Again, the old-fart music.
But I’ve also, again, picked up a few bootlegs lately. The ones that are different than my regular music (I’ve picked up more of those too) are Gary Numan and some bluegrass ones (from Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2008). I’ve always kind of liked bluegrass, but never really listened to it that much before. My dad had a Gary Numan EP that I’d listen to, but never really gotten anything past that. Now I see..hmm..his songs are basically all the same.

The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:

It suffers because of Orbison’s absence, but it also just feels a lot less spontaneous. Like they’re trying too hard to have fun.

I was surprised to learn..
Basically the tracks for Vol. 1 (besides Handle With Care) were all written and recorded in a day. Dylan had 9 or 10 days until he had to go on a tour, and they recorded 9 or 10 songs. Writing in the morning, recording in the night.
The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:
"We could run a nice blog here if we didn't have all these members getting in the way."
I just listened to Vol. 1 again
and I can easily say that there’s not a bad song on that album. My favorite is probably Tweeter and the Monkey Man, with Margarita at the bottom of the list.
Lately, I’ve gotten a little obsessed with The Wrens, because The Meadowlands is such a ridiculously great album. Beyond that, I always listen to a ton of Dylan and Kinks, and…
WalrusMan had a great idea (that I’m sure that Ulnar Maws jerk would have never thought of). Last.fm pages are easier to use than normal talking.

yes yes yes
Of Montreal is weird as shit, but very very good. Keep listening to animal collective, it’ll pay off.
As for me,
Mogwai’s new album The Hawk Is Howling just absolutely rocks. I’ve been listening to a lot of PJ Harvey, fleet foxes, the national (omg jpon we’re twins!), bowie, early modest mouse, handsome furs. I’ve gotten into the post-hardcore to the tiniest degree and bands like miracle of 86 and Jawbreaker have been breakin me in nice and easy. I’ve been digging deep into Atlantic’s jazz archives. Charles Mingus, Coltrane, Joe Turner and some Sonny rollins have been doing the trick.
Two bands that i’m seeing this week that i’m super pumped about: Born Ruffians and Octopus Project. Born Ruffians is bouncy fun twee indie that is surprisingly musically voluptuous, you might say. Octopus project is crazy indie electronica that plays in crazy time signatures and plays a theremin. Fun times.
As far as the usual rotation goes, everything has pretty much stayed the same. Wolf Parade, Animal Collective, Built to Spill, Architecture in Helsinki, Sunset Rubdown, Beck, Broken Social Scene, The Dodos for indie. Immortal Technique, Blackalicious, DJ Rectangle, MIA and some dangermouse for hip/hop. Blind Willie McTell is taking up all my blues space and i would highly reccomend anything of his. Miles Davis and John Coltrane get an hour of love per day.
So yeah, that’s the music i’m listening to.

And Upward over the mountain is a great song off that album, too. Really good record.

Yeah that is also a great album.
I just happen to be partial to Love and Some Verses and Sodom, South Georgia. Probably can’t go wrong with either album.

you really can’t go wrong with Iron and Wine.
creek drank the cradle is probably on my top 10 best records. certainly top 10 best debut records.

Also
check out his album with Calexico. It is called In the Reins.
I am Cameron Wood and this is my son and business partner CW Culberson.
That’s where I’d start…but I really dig Calexico.
And if you dont know Calexico, you should check them out.
They say some players get out of bed hitting; Pablo Sandoval doesn't wait that long
Did you get the new album?
I am waiting to get it until I have money. Garden of Ruin was good but it was no Feast of Wire.
I am Cameron Wood and this is my son and business partner CW Culberson.
Carried to Dust
Just scored it at Aquarius last week. I havent spent much time
with it, but at first listen it recalls Feast of Wire in its instrumentation
as opposed to the stripped down feel of Garden Ruin.
Time will tell whether that’s a good thing or not.
Also of note: Sam Beam (Iron and Wine) sings on one track.
They say some players get out of bed hitting; Pablo Sandoval doesn't wait that long
I loved Rabbit Fur Coat, so I was disappointed that I only really liked about half of Acid Tongue.
I’ll probably give it a few more listens though. This time next week, I’ll be raving about it.

Yeah, most of my love is for about half the album, too. But I don’t dislike any of the rest, so.

Yeah, Rabbit Fur Coat is great but
I think I like the Rilo Kiley-ness of Acid Tongue. It kind of sounds like some of the songs from Under the Blacklight (also a fave).
I am Cameron Wood and this is my son and business partner CW Culberson.
I absolutely hated Under the Blacklight, but I really like Acid Tongue.

Hated Under the Blacklight. You must be part of Fake America!

But seriously
Why do you hate it? I respect your opinion but it is so full of poppy goodness. It is like hating rainbows or puppies.
I am Cameron Wood and this is my son and business partner CW Culberson.
I didn’t hate Under The Blacklight, but I’m not a huge fan. I think the only album of theirs I’d put it above is Take-Offs And Landings. It never really got to me the way More Adventurous or Execution of All Things did.
Trent Kline: Decentish. Also, my website is called ChatterBalks Dot Com. It's not being updated right now. Hope for more at your own risk.
The review from Sound Opinions pretty much sums it up. Here’s a link to listen to the review:

What man? Which man? Who’s the man? When’s a man a man? What makes a man a man? Am I a man? Yes. Technically I am. - FotC
And I also find myself agreeing with this part of Pitchfork’s review of the album: “Finding the band’s music polished to an almost blinding sheen, Blacklight is not a commercial album so much as Rilo Kiley’s conception (or misconception) of what a commercial album is. It’s their "Project Mersh”, an alternate-universe sell-out move. But beneath that surface— and Under the Blacklight is at first listen almost overwhelmingly surface— Rilo Kiley must know they’re full of shit. Either they’re utterly serious about their flirtation with the mainstream or they’re taking the piss with a wink. In both cases, the songs suffer a smothering slow death by context."
What man? Which man? Who’s the man? When’s a man a man? What makes a man a man? Am I a man? Yes. Technically I am. - FotC
Hmm. I don’t know or care whether they were trying to be more commercial (or whether they succeeded), but that reaction is just utterly the opposite of mine. The music has so much more range than the pedestrian indieosity of their earlier albums. Not sure whether the songs are quite as good, but they’re so much more fun to listen to.
I am not sure if I agree with Sound Opinions idea that this is a revisit of Rumors. It does have some Fleetwood qualities but as a whole it is not a rehash nor is it derivative. The album is glossy but the argument that Rilo Kiley is searching for an "alternate-universe sell-out move" sounds like the guys at Pitchfork starring at their Rilo Kiley t-shirts from 2001 and lamenting the fact that they aren’t the only ones who have heard of them now.
The album is a surface album but that does not mean it is bad. I don’t think many people would accuse Spoon’s Girls Can Tell of being the deepest album on the block but it is still great.
I am Cameron Wood and this is my son and business partner CW Culberson.
Also, Pitchfork never much liked Rilo Kiley. In particular they really trashed Take-Offs and Landings as I recall.
What man? Which man? Who’s the man? When’s a man a man? What makes a man a man? Am I a man? Yes. Technically I am. - FotC
See, and I like Take-Offs and Landings
so I guess I am the musical idiot.
I am Cameron Wood and this is my son and business partner CW Culberson.
It’s uneven, and the Blake Sennet songs are really bad (he got better on The Execution of All Things), but there are definitely some good songs there. Personally, as early RK goes, I like The Initial Friend EP more.
What man? Which man? Who’s the man? When’s a man a man? What makes a man a man? Am I a man? Yes. Technically I am. - FotC
But also also also, I’m surprised by your surprise. I think it’s fair to say it’s a divisive album. It got some really good reviews, even showed up in some top 10 lists. But it also was trashed by a number of sources, and was really hated by a pretty large number of hardcore Rilo Kiley fans. My reaction is actually mild compared to some.
What man? Which man? Who’s the man? When’s a man a man? What makes a man a man? Am I a man? Yes. Technically I am. - FotC
Yeah,
I am not a huge reader of music reviews. I am a big Death Cab For Cutie fan and they generally get trashed so I figure I will just like what I like, reviews be damned.
I am Cameron Wood and this is my son and business partner CW Culberson.
I thought Pitchfork hated all Rilo Kiley though.

Umm...
yeah in that they are both slowcore. I think Sparhawk lists Kozelek as one of his big influences.
What do you think of Sun Kil Moon?

Ghosts of the Great Highway is one of my favorite albums of all time. April was also quite good, though it didn’t quite live up to Ghosts.

Of Montreal is pretty treal
Every single one of their albums is completely bonkers in its own way. On one of the albums (hissing fauna, are you the destroyer?) the lead singer turns into his alter ego, a black transvestite named Georgie Fruit.
Satanic Panic in the Attic is my favorite album by them by a large margin.

I hated Pure Guava with a fiery passion (sorry to any rabid Ween fans, who I understand love that album, but I wasn’t a fan), but otherwise I mostly like them.

I haven’t liked much lately.
always down with most Neil Young albums though.
Fairley odd parent to Wendell
Hairy Byrds
I’m totally obsessed with that late-period Byrds stuff from ‘69-’71 when they grew ugly beards and became a shit-kicking country rock band. Clarence White was such an amazing guitarist and Roger McGuinn finally hit his peak as a songwriter (Chestnut Mare, Just A Season, Ballad of Easy Rider, etc.) That half studio/half live album Untitled is amazing.
Fave 2008 releases...
Bonnie “Prince” Billy – Lie Down in the Light
Perhaps BPB’s (aka Will Oldham) best since 2000’s I See a Darkness.
Folkier and county-rier than recent efforts but the female backing vocals
really add tons of depth. Maybe my favorite recording of 2008 at this point.
The Grails – Take Refuge In Clean Living
Portland-based post-rock instrumental heavyosity. Swirling garage psych
that could fool you into thinking your listening to contemporary Japanese
psych-core or 1973-era Grateful Dead.
Sun Kil Moon – April
Mark Kozelek’s done it again. Great songwriting and performance. Moody
and dark while spiritual and life-affirming. I dont know how he does it, but
I hope he keeps it up.
Portishead – Third
This will make alot of top recordings of ’08 lists and it is quite deserving.
Hank IV – Refuge In Genre
Local (SF) old-school (or maybe just old) punks keep getting better.
Catpower – Jukebox
Sure, Chan’s selling Lincolns (and tons of other shit) during the playoff
broadcasts, but I love everything she’s done, including this cover record.
Also, it’s been a great month of live music: Hardly Strickly, David Byrne
(my 1st trip to Davies Symphony Hall—what a place, what a show), and
Patti Smith at the Warfield.
They say some players get out of bed hitting; Pablo Sandoval doesn't wait that long
I really want to go up in the Marin Headlands in the morning and listen to Lost Verses while looking out over the Bridge and the bay.
lol cheesy :(
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
On topic?
The two month lines in Lost Verses always make me think of
the baseball season:
And ghosts of April ring…
Into the brisk late October
(they are not coupled like that in the song)
They say some players get out of bed hitting; Pablo Sandoval doesn't wait that long
I love Bonnie “Prince” Billy… I haven’t been able to get into the new Portishead that much though. I love the song “The Rip” but I have found the rest of the album to be somwhat disappointing. I’m not saying that I don’t like it; just that it probably won’t make my end of the year top-10 list.
Psycho killer, qu'est-ce que c'est?
For BPB fans, check out his live album, Summer in the Southeast I believe. It’s very good.

Sun Kil Moon is stuck in my head at this very moment. (Carry Me Ohio).
Didn’t someone make a Chan Marshall- Sean Marshall pun during a gameday thread this year?
Recent concerts that I've attended:
In the last couple of months:
Earth, Wind & Fire at the Big Fresno Fair
The Guess Who at the Tulare County Fair
During the last year or so:
Foreigner at the Visalia Fox Theater
Kenny Wayne Shepherd also at the Visalia Fox Theater
I enjoyed all four of those shows.
And for those of you that live in the Bay Area:
I highly recommend Biscuits & Blues for those fans of the Blues. It’s a nice little venue with good food. I was up there with friends and family in September of last year. We watched several Giants – Dodgers games, and took in a show at B & B after one of the games. Joe Louis Walker was the act – he rocked the place.
OH, and how did I forget
Tommy Emmanuel? I’ve seen him twice in the last 14 months. He is absolutely amazing! This guy is one of the greatest guitar players in the world. He can do things with only an acoustic guitar that would make you swear that there were other instruments being played simultaneously.
I have weird taste in music
I don’t like much hard rock but I love Between The Buried and Me’s album Colors.
I downloaded Neutral Milk Hotel’s album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea yesterday but forgot to sync it to my Zune. I’ve heard fantastic stuff about it though.
I also love Andrew Bird’s Armchair Apocrypha and I want more of his music but I’m not sure what’s good.
I’ve also never been to a concert.
“Between The Buried and Me’s album Colors”
Is fantastic.
They’re my favorite band.
Nice to see them mentioned here.

Lately:
Still a lot of Doom Metal (neo acts such as Reverend Bizarre, and the Gates of Slumber) as well as classics like witchfinder general and saint vitus. I’ve been on a doom metal kick for quite a few months now.
otherwise,
Been listening to Garry Higgins’s Red Hash album, the new LSD March and Black To Comm, and a bunch of old hip hop 12 inches I have…
Adoptive Parent of Francisco Peguero. He can throw, he can run, he can hit(fastballs), and he's Dominican. What else do you need to know?
I remember getting a St. Vitus album when I was 15. I didn’t get it. “C’mon, dammit….PLAY FASTER…grrrr, that’d be a cool riff if it didn’t take 30 minutes…PLAY FASTER.” I didn’t get it, and I’d just go back listening to Biohazard.

more or less this
I didn’t get it back then either. It was especially weird that they were on SST. But now I love and appreciate both them and Pentagram intensely.

Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.
Guess I’m alone in my liking of the Killers. Nirvana, Misfits, Metallica, Disturbed, Johnny Cash, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, the older Green Day, Weezer, The Ataris, The Hives, Queens of the Stone Age, Van Halen, AC/DC, and some occasional RHCP.
And some other small bands that aren’t worth mentioning, but I’m all over the place, just no modern country, no rap. Yeah, criticize me, but it’s what I listen to.
Insanity is just a state of mind.
Johnny Cash, Nirvana, and old Weezer, always and forever.
The Killers and The Hives, sometimes.

well
weezer, the ataris and the hives find my way into my mix a lot.
Nirvana is great and I’ve been getting into some of the misfits stuff more recently. Mainstream doesn’t necessarily mean bad. The Beatles were mainstream.
