winter lines, 10/20/08
AFL 10/20: Scottsdale defeated Phoenix 11-2
Scottsdale: SS Emmanuel Burriss: 2 for 5, SO
Scottsdale: DH Kevin Frandsen: 4 for 4, 2B, HBP
Scottsdale: RF Drew Sutton: 1 for 2, HR, 2 BB, SF, SO
Scottsdale: CF Ben Copeland: 1 for 4, HR, BB, SO
Phoenix: CF Eric Young: 2 for 5, 2B, SO, SB, CS
Phoenix: RHP Chaz Roe: 3.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 4 K--2 HR
Phoenix: RHP Shane Lindsay: 2.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB--1 HB
The Giants' two middle infielders were the two Scorpions hitters with multiple hit lines. Frandsen's third straight multi-hit game has raised his AVG from .222 after five games to .400 after eight games. Burriss has a .326 AVG. Copeland, who has had just 12 HRs over the last two seasons, had his first AFL HR. The Astros' Sutton homered for the third straight game. The Rockies' Young was the only Desert Dog with two hits. His third straight multi-hit game raised his AVG to .364. He now has a 6/1 SB/CS line in the AFL after he had a 46/16 line in the Texas League this year.
The Rockies' Roe and Lindsay have both been considered top ten prospects in that organization at some point, but they combined to surrender 8 ER in 6.0 IP.
HWB 10/20: Monday was an off-day in Hawaii.
Nearly half way through their season, there are 20 games remaining over the next 26 days.
Caribbean notes 10/20: no games
Caribbean notes 10/19:
Mexicali: C Todd Jennings: 1 for 4, 2B, SO, GiDP, E
Caribes: C Eliezer Alfonzo: 0 for 3, BB, SO
Caribes: SS Ivan Ochoa: 1 for 3, SO
Caribes: RHP Matt Palmer: 1.0 IP, 2 K
Among the three hitters, Alfonzo is the only one with an AVG above .250 so far. Palmer has been dominant in three save opportunities with 5 K in 3.0 perfect IP.

Has anyone noticed that the official “”http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081014&content_id=3620139&vkey=news_sf&fext=.jsp&c_id=sf" >Posey to Arizona" story on the Giants’ Web site doesn’t mention him playing in the AFL. I could have sworn that it said he was going to instructional league, then to the AFL. Did I just misread it earlier?
In any event, I wonder if we’ve seen the last of Posey for the winter. I assume instrux is over by now.

I hadn’t heard anything of him going to the AFL. I just heard going to Arizona for the instructional league so he could get ABs. I assume that the C position is just as stacked in the AFL as the HBL.

Right
Baseball America made a note of saying that after instructional league he would return to HWB but the Giants have never said what he would do after instructional league and I’m pretty certain there wouldn’t be much playing time in the AFL at this point.

Why would you even (good god *scrolls down so he doesn’t have something poking his eye through the monitor *) have paper copies of this?

I don’t understand why Ben Copeland doesn’t get any love. He hits for pretty good average, gets on base, and, while he doesn’t a lot of power, still gets his share of XBH’s. He’s also fast and plays good defense (from what I’ve read) in CF. What do the prospect guys think about him?

I like Copeland as a 4th OF type guy, he’s got problems against LHP so his upside will probably be a platoonmate. Can he handle CF? I’ll defer to the prospect mavens on that one, but I’m sure he would be adequate defensively in the corners.

I saw him on TV play Padres AAA team this season for 3-4 games. Copeland struck me as real smooth in his actions. How he tried to play the ball in the field, running bases etc. At first I thought I was watching an older 4A type player. Of coarse small sample size prevails but he intrigues me as well. I wonder if he was playing right field because Timpner was in Center or if he had proved he can’t handle it?

.261/.334/.417 isn’t that impressive (AA numbers this year). if he can repeat his san jose line with a little more pop in fresno this year, then all the more reason to not have rowand and winn.
how good is his D in CF? anyone?

from the Giants article on his drafting
“Ben is a good defensive center fielder with speed,” said Dick Tidrow, the Giants’ vice president of player personnel. “He’s an offensive left-handed batter and definitely a basestealing threat.”
“He has some pop, is an all-around player and was one of the best left on the board,” said Tidrow. “At that pick, we were looking for speed or a good pitcher. "He’s a top-of-the-order guy but not leadoff because he has some pop.”
Termed the fifth-fastest outfielder in college, the 5-foot-11, 195-pound Copeland stole a team-best 29 bases and paced the Panthers to their fourth straight 30-win season and to the Big East Tournament final.

Is Matt Palmer still in the Giants’ organization?? I know Ochoa and Alfonzo are now free agents, but I guess it’s stil interesting to see how they do.

Yea..
I bet most of them resign. It seems that minor league free agents tend to resign with their home team.
