I think the Dodgers are a much better team than their 84 wins suggest, and that's exactly the kind of team that can go nuts in the postseason. C'mon, stupid Cubs. Prove me wrong.

In the Rooting Guide thread...

I explain in great and eloquent detail why it must be Tampa Bay vs. Milwaukee in the Series.

Also, would some sort of multi-plane midair collision involving the Dodgers, both Sox(s) and the Cubs be too much to ask? Also, I’ll need Shane Victorino to be on board one of those flights.

Thanks.

Patron saint of pesky hitters.

by younghutch on Oct 2, 2008 10:50 AM PDT reply actions

I’d settle for a massive sinkhole to open up at Citizens Bank Park and just swallow Victorino.

If there was a chance for both the Red Sox and the Cubs to be playing in the LA area, we could hope one of the faults down there goes and those old shitty stadiums crumble to the ground, taking all four teams with them.

I hate the Angels; Something about 2002…I forget what exactly. Plus, Scoscia, ex-Dodger.

I’ve had that too. It’s wonderful!

Probably the most common way to eat it in the land of it’s origin is fry it with small bits of pork and vegetables, covered in spicy sauce. It’s so delicious, that I wept at the ineptitude of all the hippy-style tofu I had eaten until that point.

It’s tough to find in the states. Chinese restaurants in the U.S. have largely caved to the American expectation that a tofu dish should contain no meat.

I took a tour of Anchor Brewing yesterday—-I recommend it if you’ve never gone. Tour is free, informative, and includes all the free beer you can drink at the end.

Awesome! I’m getting ready to brew my own beer in a few weeks and I’ve got a recipe for steam beer.

Fun fact, did you know that Anchor has trademarked the phrase “steam beer” and that’s why you don’t see anyone else making it? It’s basically just a really hoped up lager that isn’t refrigerated during the fermentation process.

I love Anchor Steam, btw.

What the tour guide said was that there were several “steam beers” a century ago, but that Anchor was the only one to survive Prohibition.

by rotorueter on Oct 2, 2008 12:51 PM PDT up reply actions

It did originate in San Francisco, which is cool, but I’d always heard that they TM’d “steam” and that’s why don’t see other people making it. It’s in a little brew book I have.

Have you had their Liberty Ale (I think that’s the name) it’s great.

As an aside, the reason that it is called Liberty Ale is that it was intended to be a one-time brew back during the bicentennial. It was so popular, however, that they ended up making it a mainstay.

SPOILER

Also, I peeked in the Hop room. They use predominately Cascade and Nugget hops (and one other that I couldn’t make out). Might want to keep that in mind when you brew your Steam.

by rotorueter on Oct 2, 2008 1:05 PM PDT up reply actions

I think they TM’d it under Fritz Maytag, who didn’t take over until the 60’s. Back in the OT’s and the 1910’s, it was widely used by others.

The Liberty Ale is great. They gave us that one, the Steam, the Porter, the Summer Wheat (which is completely filtered), and the Barleywine.

Excellent. I’m wondering how hard it would be for everyone to get the same beer for the tastings? Distribution of beer is wacky and can be a regional thing.

Or, we could do a mail thing in which we trade beers with each other. That is, if your state allows you to mail alcohol. I’m sure that VA does.

It would be cool to start a blog about it, too.

We should gauge some more interest in this to see what happens.

Let’s start a list of interested people, send me an email with your name and I’ll add it to a list.

I’ve been mostly brewing pale ales at this point, experimenting with hoppiness and different yeasts. I’ve done a couple brown ales that have been well received.

I’m going to buy the equipment to go full grain in the next week or two, and start to experiment with lagers (turning my refrigerator into a chill fermenter).

My dad’s wine is good because his grapes come from Napa. He’s been doing it for almost 25 years. I still tell him he made the wrong career choice.

by SheboyganBratwurst on Oct 2, 2008 1:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Wow, that’s hardcore. My friends and I were successful with some extract brewing, but full grain is a different animal.

by rotorueter on Oct 2, 2008 1:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I’m using extracts for the malt and what not.

That’s awesome Sheboygan. I’d love to try my hand at lagers but I don’t have the refrigeration space.

Who should I start:

QB: Peyton Manning vs. HOU
or
Phillip Rivers vs. MIA

Miami’s pass defense isn’t very good. So, I’m not sure who to start.

RB: Chris Johnson vs. BAL
or
Larry Johson vs. CAR

Johnson was a monster last week but i hate depending on him. How good is Carolina’s D?
