SP Connor Graham (Rockies) - 3 1/3 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO, W (1-0), 3.86 ERA
Getting Waldis Joaquin back on track as a starting pitcher has produced mixed results. Saturday against Honolulu Joaquin pitched five innings and allowed four runs in a loss. Roger Kieschnick seems to have made a permanent place in the middle of the Beach Boys lineup. He drove in one of Waikiki's two runs on a double.
The Sharks put the game out of reach late, scoring three runs against the Waikiki bullpen. Phillipe-Alexandre Valiquette and Rob Harmon both have ERAs over 11 in the HWB so far.
The final game of this series is Sunday afternoon. All teams are off Monday.

SP Phil Hughes (Yankees) - 2 2/3 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR, 1 HB, 5.68 ERA
Scottsdale was set up for victory with an eight run rally early in the game against the Peoria Javelinas, but the big lead fell apart. The Scorpions batted around in the third inning against starter Phil Hughes. Seven runs scored with two outs. Manny Burriss scored in the inning after getting hit by a pitch. Burriss committed two errors and went hitless Saturday night. Kevin Frandsen was also hit by a pitch but he hit better than his Giants teammate, getting two base hits and an RBI.
Peoria beat up on the Scottsdale bullpen. Osiris Matos escaped without sustaining much damage. Matos allowed one run in the sixth inning. The others weren't so lucky. Jeff Sues gave up four runs, all unearned. Brad James allowed five runs without recording an out and took the loss.
Sunday is an off day for the AFL. Scottsdale hosts Phoenix Monday afternoon.
Mexican Pacific League:
Mexicali 3, Obregon 2
Mexicali Giants prospects:
C Todd Jennings - 1-2, 1 BB, .208
RP Sergio Romo - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, SV (3), 0.00 ERA
Former Giants farmhand Travis Blackley pitched fairly well over 5 2/3 innings against Obregon but ended up with a no-decision in the win over the Yaquis. Blackley allowed two runs early in the game. Oscar Robles powered the Aguilas to the win with a three run homer in the seventh inning. Sergio Romo allowed a hit and struck out two batters en route to his third save of the winter season. Todd Jennings has four hits in his last three games.
Obregon and Mexicali wrap up this series Sunday evening. The league takes a break Monday.
No box score is available for the Hermosillo/Navojoa game.
Venezuelan Winter League:
Caribes 6, Margarita 3
Caribes Giants Prospects:
SS Ivan Ochoa - 0-4, .143
C Eliezer Alfonzo - 1-3, 2 R, 1 HR (2), 1 RBI, 1 BB, .333
Caribes came back from a 3-0 deficit against Margarita to win. Caribes put up eight unanswered runs, including Eliezer Alfonzo's second home run of the winter. Ivan Ochoa had a tough day at the plate, going hitless in four at bats. Mike Smith got the win for Caribes. Smith won 11 games in 2007 in the Cardinals organization with their AAA team in Memphis.
These two teams match up one more time Sunday and then the league has an off day Monday.

It's good...
if you’re sitting behind home plate at a Beach Boys game and trying to catch a cool breeze.

Posey’s in Arizona right now at the Instructional League, IIRC.
Proud adoptive parent of Tim Alderson.
I was under the impression he was going to the AFL.

To quote jponry
Nah.
"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Not only says it - but insists upon it! ... Democracy is lovely, but baseball's more mature." BVCE supports SF Dugout and Manny Burriss.

I think he might head over to the AFL after a stint in instructional league to work on his catching. Something like that.

That’s one photo we wouldn’t mind supersized.

is leaving for the Dominican on Thursday so we should see his box scores soon.
proud father of the newly acquired Brandon Crawford..
Phil Hughes
I have no idea why Phil Hughes had such a horrid outing. Perhaps he’s working on a new pitch and just suffered through its growing pains.
But it reminded me that two winters ago John Sickels, who writes a very good prospect book annually and who has a couple of prospect web sites, including the free www.minorleagueball.com, picked Phil Hughes and Homer (What a name for a pitcher!) Bailey as his top two pitching prospects.
I tried hard to get him to make Tim his #1, but I couldn’t persuade him (although he said he did move Tim up from #6 to #3). I’m guessing that now he wished he had listened to me.
Phil and Homer may also wind up being great pitchers, but thus far they have struggled since that winter — in part because of injuries, which I suggested to John they were likely more vulnerable to than was Tim.
Whoa, Deja Vu...
I could swear I’d read that exact same paragraph before!
Weird.
