Bill Simmons throwing Robb Nen under the bus
Bill Simmons really pisses me off here. Not only does he misspell the legend's name, but he has the gall to lump him in with Dan Wheeler. What a shame.
"The lights-out guys (like Papelbon), and the hold-onto-your-seats guys (like Wheeler). When you need three improbable runs, you want the second guy out there. He's the guy who might get nervous. He's the guy who thinks to himself, "Deep down, I know I'm just a very good set-up guy masquerading as a half-decent closer." When the great comebacks happen in baseball, they usually happen with these specific types of guys on the mound -- Donnie Moore, Calvin Schiraldi, Bob Stanley, Jose Mesa, a long-in-the-tooth Rob Nenn -- the guys who can be broken, the guys who can absolutely be taken deep in the right spot."

An “arm has fallen off because I’ve ripped out every last tendon pitching my team to a championship” Robb Nen? Yeah maybe he’s just a setup guy.

Long-in-the-tooth is really just a complex metaphor for tendon damage.

Oh look a north east homer idiot. I wonder if we can lock him in a room with our homer idiot who will advocate Cain & Sanchez for Konerko this winter?

Even if you pretend Papelbon is a better closer than all these guys...
The “hardcore” Sox fans weren’t even around to see them win last night. So much for the Faithful Red Sox Nation. How do you leave early after what happened in 2004?

How to achieve great closer status, according to ESPN
1. Pitch for the Red Sox or Yankees
2. Have an “intimidating” closer face like this one for Fox commentators to fall in love with:

That’s pretty bad. If you’re going to read Simmons, at least just read his NBA stuff.

Not only does he misspell the legend’s name
So do you, It’s Mr. Robb Nen to you.

And technically speaking...
Throwing someone under the bus involves the thrower being in cahoots with the victim in the first place. If this were, say, Dusty Baker writing this column, then he would be throwing Nen under the bus, because Dusty had managed Nen all those years and had a symbiotic interest in his success, and with times getting tough, to then go ahead and say, “you know what, that Nen was a steaming pile of garbage the whole time,” that’s throwing someone under the bus.
No this Simmons dude is just a douche.

I guess I have to hand it to Bill Simmons for not putting on appearances. He knows he’s a myopic homer idiot. He rolls around in it. Good for you, Bill. Don’t ever let an alternate perspective steer you wrong!

I don’t know if you’re being sarcastic or not, but Simmons has never tried to portray himself as anything but a fan. That’s been his style and that’s what got him where he is.

this pisses me off. i’ve never emailed a sports writer to tell him/her how dumb he/she is before, but i’m sorely tempted right now. mess with bonds, mess with dusty, mess with felix rodriguez, russ ortiz, or jeff kent. whatever. but you know who was beyond reproach on that team. Robb Nen. back off simmons. back off.
Idolizing Robb Nen since 2002...

So he never mentioned Nen was pitching with a bum arm?
(And, no, I’m not clicking through to read it myself.)

Nen
Funny thing is, he must not even read the material on his own site. Here is an article from a couple years ago praising Nen for leaving it all on the line for a World Series (writer is even a Dodgers fan)

Maybe he should have taken himself out of the mix. Maybe he should have let Worrell or Felix Rodriguez carry the load. But he was getting results, right up until the last, and, as Conte says, closers don’t grow on trees. “It’s a mental aspect. Some guys have it, some don’t. A lot of guys can get three outs. Robb Nen could close.”
Eat shit, Billy.

That is such bullshit. Factually I mean. Nen gave up one frigging hit: Glaus’ double. He came in the game with the 5-4 lead hanging by a thread, thanks to Felix (the Speizio HR) and Worrell (3 straight hits to start the 8th, the last 2 putting guys at second and third). There is no way any intelligent writer can say that the rally was off Nen and list him as a World Series closer choker. After the Glaus double, Nen went K, IBB, sac bunt, K. Three outs, one hit, no runs charged, and one blown save that was nearly impossible to convert. Simmons can go to hell for this cheap shot.
