How come we never hear “The Red Sox wouldn’t be here if not for David Ortiz and Josh Beckett, their superstars” or the “Rays rode the backs of all-stars Longoria and Navarro and Kazmir all season” ???

by chilibean_3 on Oct 16, 2008 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions

the decline started well before Fox got into the mix.

What helps is having new teams that people are excited about. I bet this year’s ratings will be better than last season’s.

I’d also speculate that the World Series has been getting later and later during the year and because they’re all night games, for East Coasters, the games start and end too late for a lot of marginal people to stay up and watch.

I agree on your point about scheduling.
New teams don’t help ratings though. Different teams hurt the ratings, like the Tigers-St. Lois games. The casual fan wants to see the teams and players they know. If they don’t know most of the players, they have no reason to care.
