OT: NaNoWriMo
I'm one of the many people that have always said, "One day, I'll write a book when I have the time," but never get around to it. It seems like it would be a lot of fun, but that time just never presents itself.
One of my friends has suggested in the past to participate in NaNoWriMo. I was curious if anyone here has participated in it, or plan to do so? I know many of you are aspiring writers/journalists, so I figured I'd spread the word and see if we can get a few McCoven to give this a shot.
Also, any ideas for a story would be welcome!

She gave him a terse look.
“How do I look?” , she asked.
“Pretty damned terse” , he returned.

“Help me somebody!” , he cried out as he lay bleeding on the concrete.
A young girl , no more than eleven or twelve , walked over to where he lay and with both hands affixed a Giants hat on top of his wild , disheveled hair.
She took a few steps back and gave him an appraising look.
“Well , it helps you” , she said quietly. “But it ruins the hat.”

Hey , it was a momentary mindset.
I actually thought we were going to collectively write a novel.
You should see what I did when Adult Friend Finder asked me to describe my fantasy.

I might do it.
Which means I’ll say I’ll do it, write about 500 words and give up, like I have each of the last four years.

There’s this online community of musicians I’m a part of, and some of them are big on NaNoWriMo. It comes up on that forum every year.
I’m more of an instrumentalist, and I’m generally terrible at writing good lyrics or prose. It’s just not my thing.

I did RPM Challenge for the first time last year, and it damn near killed me. :-/

I did it twice – unsuccessfully in 2002, and successfully in….uh, 2004, I think. Maybe 2005. At some point while I was living in Chicago, anyway.
It was fun. The novel I completed was probably too autobiographical and strictly realistic to be interesting to me or maybe a few other people who know me, but it meant a lot to me.
I was briefly tempted to try again this year, but the truth is, I have a son who’s two and a wife who’s seven months pregnant. I don’t have the time to write a short story in 30 days at the moment.

I never have the time to do it. I’m stuck in two writing classes this semester, but neither is prose. Journalism and screenwriting, damn you!

Suddenly, I'm reminded
Of something that drove me crazy on the NaNoWriMo boards the last time I did it.
There was some guy who posted, asking for help with the setting of his novel. He wanted to figure out which neighborhood in “Downtown New York” would be the best setting for his novel, based on certain criteria. He had never visited New York and seemed to know nothing about it. Now, I went to college in New York, so I tried to help. I had to explain to him what the boroughs were, and how not all of Manhattan was considered “Downtown New York.”
What drives me crazy, and what I just don’t get, is why the hell do you want to set your novel in a place you know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about!? Argh. Stupid.

That also drives me nuts
My screenplay is set in LA and Hokkaido, Japan. I’ve never been to Hokkaido, but I’ve done craploads of research and I’m trying my best to accurately represent the region and the situations in the story. When you can’t actually go to the places you write about, the least you can do is learn about the place.

Damn!
Wish I would have known about this before! When our school calendar was “year round” we were off in November. Now on a traditional schedule November means report cards, parent conferences and the general pulling out of hair.
Is there one in the summer?

It comes around in November. I suppose that’s the challenge, to write a novel in 30 days when you have lots of crap going on.

I wonder if the parents would suspect anything if I wrote out the conference forms like this:
Once upon a time there was a little boy named John Smith. John’s math skills were at grade level, his reading skills were above grade level; however, his social skills needed much work. Every day John would hit the other children. Hit, hit, hit, went John. “Stop, stop, stop!” cried the children.

Reminds me of the 24 Hour Comic, something I’ve always wanted to do but never had the chance to try. Maybe I should do it now since I’m currently jobless and have loads of free time on my hands.

“Oh , piss on your ‘Five year plan!’” , she barked. "More like ‘Five Years Of Lazy – Assed , Parasitic Dependence On A Strong But Overly Sympathetic Woman.’
She strode to the dresser , furiously yanked open the top drawer , quickly reached in and brought out a gun which she then pointed at the shaking form before her. “And here’s where it ends , you despicable , worthless waste of meat. There’s the door , and on the other side of it is your immediate future. I suggest you go embrace it before I perforate your pathetic ass with this .38.”
