Sanchez...C.C.
Hypothectically speaking, what do you think of the Giants trading Sanchez, Velez, and Schierholtz (only because Winn's contract would be too big), to the Marlins for Uggla, and Gregg? They seem to both be available and both fill spots that are needed on the Giants roster while solving the outfield crunch.
RF Winn 1. Lincecum
LF Lewis 2. Cain
3B Sandoval 3. Zito
2B Uggla 4. Lowry
C Molina Yabu/Correia?
CF Rowand Hinshaw/Valdez
1B Ishikawa/? Taschner/Romo
SS Burriss Gregg/Wilson
Aurilia?/Frandsen/Bowker/Roberts/Holm
That payroll is low, around $72-$75 million depending on bench/bullpen (rough estimate, may even be lower than that), which would allow them to make a run at Sabathia, even for $15-20 million/yr. I know this is very unlikely, but would be a damn good team with a rotation like that. One more bat at 1B/3B would be nice though too.

didn’t we do Uggla already?? Let’s pick another player to talk about that we won’t get.

agree that Uggla’s been done to death, but don’t you think he’s a viable target?

I think it’s possible, but it doesn’t mean it’s necessary to raise the same issue every couple of days.

entirely speculative by me
Where are we getting the idea that Florida wants to get rid of their players or pick anybody else’s up? I’m not being critical, I would just like to know what signs the Marlins have given for people start dreaming up trades?

i can't find it right now
but there was a piece in a major Florida newspaper (Sun-Senitinel) that made it sounds like there isn’t much question that the Fish will unload a bevy of players this offseason. Anyone?

The Marlins have something like 17 arbitration eligible players this offseason, and that’s what’s leading everyone to believe they need to ship off some of their players.

unless the Giants’ are willing to eat a good portion of the contract to aquire Uggla (or whomever). Perhaps they wouldn’t have to give up another player that way.

Uggla and Gregg would address a couple weaknesses the Giants need to address. At this time penciling in Lowry might not be wise. Let Lowry get healthy and then SF could have some needed depth.

This
Is by far the least-retarded trade fanpost in a while.
Makes sense for the marlins because Sanchez, Velez, and Shierholtz are all under control for a while and are not too close to big-money arb.
Sorta makes sense for us because 1.) We get Uggla’s bat, and 2.) Gregg helps our Bullpen
But the biggest problem IMO is that we end up with a big fat hole in our rotation. I understand that you’ve got to give to get, but because we don’t have any MiL options to step into that rotation hole we would now be forced to fill two spots with FA’s.
I’m not sure how great that is going to work out.
The team you’ve listed + Burrell @ 1b would be a very different lineup from 2008 however.

You wouldn’t figure they’d take Winn because of the $, but he certainly would help them improve their defense. I guess Nate looked good in the field as well, but I’d bet that they’d try to pry Lewis instead. Schierholtz is not going to do it.. I wouldn’t feel great about giving them Freddie, but Uggla is a big-time target. And let’s face it, Eugenio is not going to help them with what they want to achieve.
As far as I can tell, they are going to want young pitching and good fielding. As much as I’d like to propose a Bocock package, I think that they’d be more interested in a guy like Travis Ishikawa, who would shore things up defensively (A kid named Gaby Sanchez does seem to be nearly ready for them at first, though.
What I can’t decide (and what I’d love to hear from other on) is whether it’d be preferable to send Sanchez or Alderson as the primary in the deal. I’ll bet that most folks would part more easily with Sanchez, but isn’t this just because we’re still at the fantasy stage with Alderson. In BP’s Goldstein’s estimation, he is not 1- or 2-slot material. Don’t we think that Sanchez still could be? Dont’ get me wrong, though: if we shipped off Alderson tomorrow, I’d be very, very upset.
BTW, I really like a Gregg acquisition, and have been throwing him into my prospective deals as often as possible. He does have a tendency to walk some guys, though, so maybe the Giants will steer clear in an effort to right that ship.

Depending on how long they think tell the next wave of help will hit the MLB a sandwich pick from Winn in the 2010 draft could be very interesting to them. ( Yes I presuming Winn is Type B next winter though it is possible his production remains in type A.) Or they just reship him in June /July for a more advanced prospect. In the mean time he sores up their "D" and just does all the steady Eddy things he does.

This maybe would provide less immediate help but…
I think that a Winn, Molina and a mid level prospect for Willy Aybar and Reid Brignac. This may seem like a lot to give up but these are the types of deals the Giants need to do in my opinion.
The Rays would get an upgrade at two major positions and not have to give up any of their current starting talent. The Giants get two potential pieces of their future IF and make room for Shierholtz and Sandoval.
The Giants probably don’t improve in 2009 but likely improve the team in the future. Their line up would look like this:
C- Sandoval
1b- Ishikawa
2b- Burriss
3b- Aybar
ss- Brignac
lf- Lewis
cf- Rowand
rf- Shierholtz
I don’t know if that team wins 72 games but it sure is younger and more exciting to think about. Perhaps this coupled with a Sanchez + ? for Uggla and the signing of C.C. could make the team competitive.

Well...
I don’t know. And yes it is rosterbation. Is anything above this not?
I will say though that Aybar is a sub and plays two positions that the Rays have locked up in Longoria and Pena. Brignac is in the minors and the Rays currently have Bartlett and Zobrist blocking him with this year’s 1st pick perhaps 3-4 years away from taking the reigns.

Why is that?
That trade makes them better in the short term and they are not really giving up anything in the long run. Also, it is not like Molina would be on the books for more than a year.

Yeah Molina is probably not worth it for them.
I agree. I didn’t realize how close Navarro’s year was to Molina’s.
I still think that these are the players that the Giants should go after though.

Why would they want Bengie?
Dioner Navarro is a good hitter and is significantly cheaper. Also, their outfield has Upton, Baldelli, and Crawford in it already, which is a pretty cheap but still productive outfield. I don’t think they would want to take on Winn’s salary.

Why Schierholtz?
Their outfield already has Hermida, Willingham, and Ross. They’re pretty stacked already. But anyways, yes please, but it won’t happen.
by boonitez on Oct 14, 2008 4:38 PM PDT 0 recs
I doubt they’d want Schierholtz, but apparently they will try to rid themselves of Willingham (part of the defensive problem), and perhaps cash in on Hermida as well.

By the way
Buster Olney reported yesterday (for what it’s worth) that Marlins’ ownership has given a blank check to the GM to retain every one of the players that are arb eligible if he so desires. They think they have the talent to win the NL East next year, and they probably do.
