A few new trade names...
Some clown from the Chicago tribune discusses the Giant's interest in trading for a bat. I've heard plenty of the Uggla rumors but have never heard of Derrek Lee being a possibility. I believe Konerko's name was tossed around before the trade deadline. Uggla seems reasonable if the Marlin's have a fire sale but I would not touch Konerko with a ten foot pole and think Derek Lee is heading down hill and will be worthless by the time this team contends.
I felt obligated to post this article since it mentioned Matt Cain and believe we need to keep talking about how ridiculous trading Cain would be until Sabean finally hears us.

Sabean has already stated that both Lincecum and Cain are untouchable. This looks to be more speculation rather than anything the Giants have really looked into.

Konerko for Rowand
White Sox want to unload Konerko and could use a CF. SF needs some power and could benefit from unloading Rowand’s monies.

we need a third baseman. I suppose Uggla could play 3rd, but his defense will be really bad there.

I’ve always liked Derrek Lee – I was really hoping the Giants would trade for him when the Marlins were shopping him several years back – but he’s getting up there in the years and starting to decline. Konerko’s gotten worse for three straight seasons – his OPS+ has fallen from 136 at his peak in 2005 to 103 in 2008 – which is really just not very good for a first baseman.
Plus, I’m perfectly okay with trying out Ishikawa and Sandoval at first.
Uggla might be more interesting, but I suspect we’d have to give up too much to get him.

You know..
If we’re trading Cain we have to really get value back. That has to be either multiple semi-proven players or a huge proven bat. I think the best fit between those two guidelines is Prince Fielder. What does everyone think of that?

Trade off
I have very mixed emotions about trading a player who took a sweetheart contract as Matt did — and one who says he would like to spend his entire career in San Francisco. I’m not saying I wouldn’t trade him under any circumstances — Prince Fielder would be tough to pass up as an example — but to be honest, I feel when a player shows loyalty to his club, the club should return the favor.

It's Interesting....
I find it quite interesting that a writer for the Chicago Tribune mentions the Giants being interested in 2 aging and decline 1B who just happen to be on Chicago teams. Hmmmm….I think White Sox or Cubs fans would like nothing better than to get rid of Konerko and Lee.
Konerko could free up salary and could be replaced with Swisher. Cubs fans would like nothing better than to get rid of Lee and open up a spot for them to place Mark Texeira. I’m sorry, but I don’t see Sabean trading Matt Cain for Lee or Konerko (or Uggla for that matter). So, I call BS on the Lee and Konerko rumor.
Personally, I don’t think the Giants need to act desperate and do whatever they can to add power to the lineup. Honestly, I don’t think the Giants even need to make a move to fill 1B. I think a combo of Sandoval/TI could provide a solution at 1B next year.
The only immediate area of need that the Giants probably need to fill from outside the organization is 3B. I could see how Uggla could fit that bill, but I am not sure if I like the cost.

It looked to me like Rogers was just assuming and had no solid info at all to say the Giants were interested in Lee or Konerko. The only thing that worried me was that the expression he used was that the Giants’ might “kick the tires” on them. Maybe he really did talk to Sabean!!

At the end of the day
At the end of the day, Brian has kicked the tires and done his due diligence. But what has he really accomplished? :)
Maybe if he looked under the hood.

Dan Uggla has the weirdest splits ever.
vs Lefthanded .191, .310, .321
vs Righthanded pitchers .283, .377, .578
Uggla is no spring chicken (he’ll be 29 shortly) however he appears to be in a position to IMPROVE on his breakout year, based on splits. Also, Uggla did struggle( OPS .788 to .960) in the cavernous Dolphin stadium. Moving to AT&T may actually boost his numbers, because it would actually give him a shorter distance to right field (385 to 365). Uggla, if it was for the right price, would make tremendous sense for this team.;
