Denker gone, WTF

http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081010&content_id=3609965&vkey=news_sf&fext=.jsp&c_id=sf

I'm sure many of you have encountered this by now, but I've only seen Marcello's offhand mention of it, so far.

I just don't get it. It seems to me he would be worth a 40 man spot for next year: he's only 22, and it is possible (though not likely) that he might become half mediocre at defense. If not, they could always do this later. I'm not particularly high on Denker, but he isn't a throw away prospect, either. WTF.

I am now nervous about their middle infield plans, as they have also sent Ochoa packing. Not that I'll miss Ochoa much, but at least he can play both positions, and is not bocock bad at the plate. Does this mean they are trying to put Noonan on a rocket ship to the majors? Do they have strange FA machinations at SS (throwing the bank at oft injured furcal), having Burriss as backup SS and in the mix at 2b? Are we looking at Frandsen/Velez at 2b, and Burriss/ ?? at SS? And who on earth is going to be the backup SS, then? Dizzy as your rushed aaa/mlb 3B and 2B?

You don’t read Grant’s posts?

..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

to be fair, Grant’s posts get pushed down when he makes another one. When I log on, I usually just look at Grant’s latest post, and then I go to the side and check out the fanposts. In this case, he made the Denker one and then it kind of got lost between the gameday threads. (although considering the number of responses he got, it wasn’t lost by too many.) Maybe his non game day posts should go on the side instead of the “recommended fanposts,” which are just Winter Lines over and over again. Let me complain about this once again, although nobody cares. Four of the five “recommended posts” are winter lines and while I look forward to them and appreciate all the hard work involved, the average number of responses this “recommended” post receives is 9. Only the latest winter lines should be on this list.

Yea..

The minor lines I think could be done somehow else. I appreciate them, I just think clogging up the top of the fanposts isn’t the way to do it. I’ve always been of the idea to put them on the main page. It’d create a problem for the people who just look at the top post, as the minor lines would push down grants posts and gameday threads, but I think that’s better.

But

The minor lines are the second best part of the site behind the Matt Cain trade fanposts.

by slcgiant on Oct 11, 2008 12:03 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

is the SBN format essentially unalterable?

I’ve missed quite a few of Grant’s non gameday posts this way. Typically, I’ll notice the first one posted, and if it is something that I’m already aware of (gameday threads, usually), my eyes will scan the right side of the column instead.

How else would it be?

Basically yes, the format is main page posts which are the focus of the blog and then the fanposts/fanshots.

as in another sidebar category added, which will be designated for the minor lines, alone.

also a away to list, perhaps via another sidebar entry, grants non gameday posts

Truely..what makes this a blog is Grants non gameday posts. Otherwise it’s just a chatroom.

You misunderstand me. I want Grant posts as prominent as they are now; in fact, what I am proposing would increase the accessibility to Grant’s posts . The side column entry/box would list the most current Grant column entries (the non-game day threads). Grant’s posts from a few days back are often pushed down far enough that they are difficult to find—especially when the season is full on.

I’m not saying this because of foolish and funny error here; I’ve often found myself coming upon an excellent Grant post from a few days back, which I somehow missed—and being that I check the site quite often around near game time and later on that day, my doing so is surprising. I’m probably not alone in having done this.

And I thought Grant’s posts got me excited.

That’s a lot of clutter to find something that can be found by scrolling down. What do you want to push off the top of the page for it?

Not sure what you mean.

Note where the recent posts box is above and to the right. I say make that box the ‘grant posts’ only, and a bit extended. Then add another box just like it, with the minor lines entries. I suppose if one wanted, one could add a separate category of recent in-game, entries, but that would likely be superfluous. The space is there: comments in posts can often run very long, and there is amble black space on the right.

Unless this guy’s monitor resolution is 1024×100, I don’t see how he could have missed Grant’s post.

There amass been plenty of articles written this spring about the stud shortstop Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum , as well as the fluid young outfielders and thirteen basemen Kevin Frandsen.

The gameday thread only had three lines of text though. Not to pick on you, but I’m curious as to how you missed it so easily.

I’m still a little shocked I did. It was right down below the the ALCS thread, and was noticeable on the first look at the page. (btw, it isn’t 3 lines; including the formatting, and title, you’re looking at 7 lines, some of very large size, or size of formatting space. Nevertheless…

I think I must have just read the content, dismissed the thread because the game was over, and figured what was below it was the previous ‘open game thread’. I had checked the site when that conversation was live, and there wasn’t a long time interval between the 3 posts, so I must not have expected to miss much. Only then did look at sfgiants.com . Once I was made aware of the craziness, I looked for posts on the right side column, and having already thought there was nothing I was unaware of on the main blog page, I never considered checking it for this type of info (which often appears on fanposts first).

For old times sake...

He’s gone? No way!!!! Now people just have to search to see if haverecords posted in the main thread before making this one.
