Brandon Inge

I know he seems spookily similar to Feliz in respects to their gloves and low obp. but I was wondering what people think about the Giants going after Brandon Inge to fill the 3rd base hole? A couple years ago he hit 27 homeruns albeit with a 250ish average. I've always liked him and he's signed fairly reasonably at around 6.5mil a year over the next 3 years, he's also still fairly young (31 next year) He had a tough season last year and reportedly the Tigers are having a difficult time unloading him, He could probably be had for a low level prospect depending on how much salary the receiving team is willing to take on.

Re: Brandon Inge
Let's get him!

Well, actually I don't see the point to getting him either, but the thread's running awful negative so I thought I'd just try to be contrary.  OK how's this: If we sign Inge for effectively a throw away kid, we basically get Feliz but since it's not actually feliz we get to keep the  supp pick, and when we get something better than Inge for the hot corner we can send him back to catcher. That's all I got.

Re: Brandon Inge
FWIW, Inge is quoted as saying he'd never consider a move back to catcher.  And he'd make a scene.  Bitch fits FTW!

Re: Brandon Inge
Trading for Inge would be like trading for Feliz, which by itself is pointless because Feliz is actually a free agent.  But that's the kind of tortured logic it would take to justify giving up anything of value for Inge, let alone actually giving him a bat and expecting him to use it for its intended purpose.

Glad to hear Sabean isn't interested.

I'd rather have Feliz.

Re: Brandon Inge
I'd take Inge for Aurilia or Roberts, other than that I'm not interested. He'd be an upgrade over Feliz, and I like the idea of buying someone low... really low. Maybe the Tigers eat 1/3 of the salary, and we give up a fringe prospect? I don't know. I'd rather have Frandsen for the minimum at 3B than Felinge.

I'd rather have Aurilia starting at 3rd and Ort at 1st than see any of our players go to Detroit, particularly for Inge.  Noooooooo thank you.

Here is my third base wish list from worst to first.
  1. Brandon Inge
  2. Pedro Feliz
  3. Anyone else with a pulse, and most without one.

Re: Brandon Inge
By the way, if Sabean is smart and decides to bring back Pedro Feliz, (although that would mean he wasn't smart) he should start a Lincecum for Inge rumor about 48 hours before the actual announcement.

Re: Brandon Inge
i hate the idea, but would do it if and only if 1) detroit takes ray durham (and only if seattle wont give us sexon for him) 2) detroit pays at least half of inge's salary for the next 3 years.

Re: Brandon Inge
This kind of thinking might make it paletable.  How about the Tigers get both Roberts and Aurilia (combined 3 years and $16.5M remaining on their contracts) for Inge (3 years and $19.1M remaining on his contract)?  The ability of Aurilia to play all four infield positions makes him much more valuable to a contender like the Tigers as a backup infielder then Durham is at just second base.  Roberts could play his RedSox role for the contending Tigers in both 2008 and 2009.

by giantsrainman on Jan 5, 2008 4:49 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Re: Brandon Inge
yea i could see that, and aurilia would be much happier in a reserve role for the tigers than inge appears to be.  but i think unless detroit ALSO picks up some of inge's salary we have to get a mid-level prospect or something.  seems like roberts would have some value to any contender so we ought to get more than just some team's garbage for him.  i dont like inge at all but the fact that he's available for nothing (and maybe theyll practically pay us to take him) and plays a position of great need dictates that sabean has to "kick the tires."

by sam23 on Jan 5, 2008 6:30 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Re: Brandon Inge
Both Roberts and Aurilia are being paid starter salaries and neither will be filling a starter role for the Tigers.  If the Tigers are willing (in my mind doubtful) to add a prospect fine, but doing so should not be a requirement.  We are trading two 35+ year old players that should be backups for us for a starting 3B to hold the fort until Angel developes.  I also made a math error on the combined dollars owed to Roberts and Aurilia.  The combined dollars are actually $17.5M not $16.5M (2yrs @ $6.5Mea for Roberts and 1yr @ $4.5M for Aurilia).  I see no reason for any dollars to be added to the deal on either side.

Another reason to do this deal is that it could free up lots of playing time for Scheirholtz, Ortmeier, Frandsen, Lewis, and Davis.  If we did this I would hope to see Schierholtz and Ortmeier platoon at 1B, Lewis and Davis platoon in LF, and Frandsen get 40 starts each (120 total) at 2B, SS, and 3B backing up Durham, Vizquel, and Inge.

Re: Brandon Inge
The money may be more or less even, but, honestly, I'd rather have the contracts that expire sooner. In fact, I'd be all for DFAing/buying out Roberts and Aurilia if they can't be dealt by the deadline. I'd rather see a minor leaguer getting those utility ABs, even though said minor leaguer will probably be less productive.

Re: Brandon Inge
You and I both know that this wish of yours ain't happening.  So, why even bother to discuss it?

If the Giants did the trade I suggest and they commit to platooning Schierholtz and Ortmeier at 1B, Lewis and Davis at LF, and 120 starts for Frandsen (40 each at 2B, SS, and 3B backing up Durham, Vizquel, and Inge) would this not accomplish your desired objective of finding playing time for our youngsters?

That said, I fully acknowledge that the chances of my suggested trade happening is almost (but not quite in my judgement) as low as the chances of the Giants DFAing or buying out Aurilia and Roberts.  So perhaps we are just both wasting our time talking about things that just will never happen.

Re: Brandon Inge
They released Grissom, I can easily see Aurilia getting the same treatment if he continues his poor play.

Re: Brandon Inge
True enough.  But to expect Aurilia to totally colapse like Grissom did in 2005 is expecting alot more to go wrong then seems reasonable to me.

Re: Brandon Inge
Aurilia hit .252/.304/.368 last season. Not 2005 Grissom territory, but pretty much a total collapse.  Assuming he keeps that stellar performance up, I think the only way he avoids a DFA is if Frandsen falls on his face or Durham is out of the lineup (either by DL or trade).

Re: Brandon Inge
Personally I expect Richie to rebound some.  But, even if he doesn't I do not expect him to be any worse then last year and the numbers he provided last year are fine for a backup middle infielder they are just not fine for part of a platoon at  1B.  If we do not trade Richie I do not expect to see Richie as part of a platoon but rather exclusively as a backup.  I would wish (but do not expect) the same for Dave Roberts if he too is not traded.

Re: Brandon Inge
I wouldn't take him if he was DFA'd.

by chefasaurus on Jan 5, 2008 4:43 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Re: Brandon Inge
This makes no sense.  If he is DFAed aand passes thru waivers we could sign him for just 1 year and $400K with Detroit still obligated to play the rest of the 3 years and $19.1M on his contract.  Why the hell would you not sign him if he cost nothing in talent and almost nothing in dollars?

No if you are saying you would not make a waiver claim and thus accept the $19.1M contract then we are in agreement.  But, DFA and waiver claim do not mean the same thing.  As I said above the only way I accept his contract is if Detroit takes the contracts of both Rich Aurilia and Dave Roberts in trade.

Re: Brandon Inge
There is absolutely no point in acquire Inge.  That's my point.  He's a crappy hitter and is not part of the future.   So one year at $400K is STILL a complete waste of roster space and, more importantly, At-Bats.

Re: Brandon Inge
You are just not being realistic if you think Brian Sabean is actually going to start 2008 with the current roster.  At least a 3B and possibily a 1B as well is going to be added so the question at hand is really how to we make it paletable for whichever ones are added.  Seems to me at 1 yr and just $400K for Inge would be about as paletable as it is likely to get considering the other options Sabean seems to be considering.  To my way of thinking the only thing more paletable might be if we can dump 2 years of Roberts and 1 year of Aurilia for 3 years of Inge.

The only benefit to this for me would be the draft pick we'd get from cutting Feliz loose. And I'm grasping here.

Re: Brandon Inge
No. I saw a few Tigers' games last season and he's no Pedro with the glove, not close. Where Pedro would come in on bunts with fluidity and speed, Inge  would look awkward and unbalanced. The arm strength does not compare either. Don't waste even a mid-level prospect on him. If the Tigers want Durham straight up for Inge, I'd go for it, but I cannot imagine that would happen.

Re: Brandon Inge
Folks, I do believe we've seen what we're going to see this offseason.  Maybe there will be one or two additions come spring training, but they won't be of any interest to anyone.  The biggest thing that may yet come will be the two or three year contract offered to Pedro Feliz.  Fini.  No more.  Our corner infielders will be Pedro, Ortmeier, and whomever they decide to platoon with Ort (Schierholtz?).

With that in mind, I must ask this one simple question...  Why on God's green earth would we Giants fans even accidentally try to talk ourselves into Brandon Inge, or any other player that may or may not marginally improve our team?  I don't get it.  I want real improvement or nothing.  And if it's nothing, I'll take it over Brandon frickin' Inge or other marginal talent.  Why?  Because I think we already lead the league in both veteran savvy and marginal talent!
