konerko available now?

mlbtraderumors.com is reporting the angels and chisox are discussing a konerko deal now that the sox have landed swisher.  i dont know if we can match the angels offer (names being mentioned include figgins, kendrick, santana) but i sure hope sabean is kicking the tires on konerko.  (sanchez/lowry+roberts/winn+sosa/other prospect?)

Re: konerko available now?
I think we should stay away from Konerko now.  The Angels can top anything we can offer, and even if we win that battle we'd end up giving way too much.  This would've been signifigantly easier for us if the Sox hadn't just gotten Swisher and they still had a huge need for a CF.  Now the deal would have to be pretty much all pitchers, which would clear out our huge excess.  If we did get Konerko we would have to sacrifice almost all of our pitching prospects for just one bat.  I'd rather go with Ort for a year than see that happen.

Re: konerko available now?
yea if the sox want a leadoff hitter/outfielder to put swisher at first and would take a sanchez plus one of the excess outfielders id take it, but nothing more.

Re: konerko available now?
But that's the thing- there's no way that would be enough.  The Angels could top that more than easily.  And they don't want Swisher at first; if they traded Konerko, they'd want Josh Fields to take over.

Re: konerko available now?
oh i assumed they would want figgins in the of, but i guess they could move crede and play him at 3rd or use him in the middle of the infield as well.  yea youre right, we dont have a chance unless we outbid the angels and thats not worth it.

Re: konerko available now?
Even with the Giants complete black hole at first over the last 7 years, I'm not very interested in Konerko.

2008 will be his age 32 season and a good portion of his hitting stats have been helped out by playing in Chicago, one of the better parks to hit in.

His career road stats have him posting an .801 OPS, not outstanding for a 1B. He would probably be able to hit in 2008 but I'd have concerns about 2009-2010.

Sabean should look to hang onto prospects and try to dig up a AAAA-type 1B or a salary swap with Durham like the proposed Sexson trade thats floated around a lot in these parts.

Re: konerko available now?
Your point about Konerko and US Cellular being a good hitters park, led me to look up where the ballparks ranked in HR's for 2007. The ChiSox Home Park was the fourth highest in HR average per game. Conversely, the "phone booth" was the second "worst" park in the MLB for HR's per game.

Swisher
Will be the Sox's CF.  Kenny Williams said it himself.

Konerko was reported as being dangled a while back, but I'd imagine he'd need a big return.

Votto/Encarnacion
Here's a link to a note on rotoworld.com:

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playernews.aspx?sport=mlb

It's about the Reds signing some FA's to minor league deals including 1B Andy Phillips.  Here's the key lines:

"The Reds have indicated they are going with Jeff Keppinger a their first baseman against lefthanders.  Unless an Edwin Encarnacion trade opens up third base for Keppinger to play regularly, then there's not going to be room for Phillips on the bench."

Now hear me out on this.  Joey Votto bats RH.  If Keppinger is the platoon hitter against LHP's that means that Votto is not in their plans, unless of course, they trade Edwin Encarnacion!

I've been under the impression that there is no way the Reds would trade either Encarnacion or Votto.  I don't know if the rotoworld guy knows whathehell he's talking about, but this leads me to believe either one or both of Encarnacion and Votto may be available.  I believe the Reds still need pitching?  I, for one would be thrilled for the Giants to acquire one or both of these promising young corner IF hitters.  Come on Sabes, get it done!

Re: Votto/Encarnacion
Votto and Bailey have been the cornerstones of the rumors around a Reds/O's trade for Bedard, so they're definitely willing to sacrifice Votto for quality pitching. Although there's a pretty big dropoff between Bedard and anybody we'd be willing to offer.
My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.

Re: Votto/Encarnacion
To taget both would take Lincecum or Cain.  Unlike Rios I would want Sabean to think long a hard about this if the Reds we actually willing.  Rios was never tempting enough to me.  But both Votto and Encarnacion just might be.

Re: Votto/Encarnacion
no way.  if the reds want lincecum or cain i hang up unless the name jay bruce is involved.  maaaaaybe i listen to encarnacion+votto+homer bailey but probably not.

Re: Votto/Encarnacion
I would not come close to trading Tim Lincecum for Edwin Encarnacion and Joey Votto.  I would not trade Matt Cain for the pair.

I would be willing to trade Noah Lowry and Brad Hennessey for the duo, but why in the world would the Reds consider that one?

Why would a team trade a player who very likely will be a big star (Lincecum) for two players who aren't going to be?

by sharksrog on Jan 5, 2008 10:52 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Re: Votto/Encarnacion
Oh, I would want more then just these two.  Asking for Homer Bailey though would be asking for too much.  I would ask to have a 4+ middle infield prospect also inclued that would be further away from the majors.  You are also undervaluing Votto who is rated as 5 Stars by many prospect evaluators and no worse then 4 by all I have seen.  I would trade one true 5 star like Timmy for 3 4 stars if 2 of the three have already proven themselves to be Major League ready and fill our two biggest needs (1B and 3B with probable .800+ OPS bats).

Finally, while I agree that Lincecum has a slightly higher cealing then Cain, it is Cain I would keep and Lincecum I would trade.  I think Cain is both more likely to get to and to stay for a long time at his cealing.

Re: Votto/Encarnacion
By the way, you are wrong about Votto batting right handed.  He throws right handed but he bats left handed.

...would result in revolt the likes of which we've never seen.  I would be stabbing people in the eye on general principle.

In fact, the thought of Sabean dealing for Konerko terrifies me.  I can already see the Sosa/Schierholtz/Wilson package in the press release.  And all the KNBR 'personalities' praising the deal.

by chefasaurus on Jan 4, 2008 10:36 PM PST   0 recs

Would the Angels do this deal?
Shouldn't the Angels be looking for a LHH with power to balance out their RHH dominated line-up? With Matthews, Hunter, Guerrero, Anderson, Willits and Rivera in the overcrowded OF and DH spot would Konerko then play 1b for Angels? If so, then what happens to Casey Kotchman and Kendry Morales? Sabean should call Angels GM and gauge the trade market for either of these two young players.

Re: konerko available now?
Seriously, what is the fascination with trading for 34 year olds on a last place team?
Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.

Re: konerko available now?
Konerko is 31, not 34, but I don't want him either. He's a triple whammy. He's getting older, he makes alot of money and he will cost alot in terms of players. If the Giants take on another 30 something player making eight figures, it shouldn't cost you alot in terms of players to get him, it should be a salary dump. I can't believe the Angels will give up the names I saw in that rotoworld blurb to get Konerko, and if that's true, I wouldn't attempt to match that package if I were Sabean. I think some of the trade rumors we see are just some team trying to pump up the value of a player they are trying to dump. The White Sox are probably looking to get rid of Konerko's salary so that they can play Swisher at first base.
Bring me a cleanup hitter please!!

Re: konerko available now?
Aadik...my point exactly. How come every time some other time another team is getting ready to take out the 30+ trash, so many Giant fans are ready and waiting. What difference could Konerko make...74-88 instead of 71-91. Last place is last place. If the Giants don't want to see what they have with their young guys, then get off your ASS!!!Sabean and find somebody else's young guy that is blocked or out of favor. I would hope it is only a small minority of Giant fans that is advocating this f***ing hamster wheel of 30+ castoffs that Sabean has us on year after year.

by BigDaddyK on Jan 5, 2008 9:53 AM PST   0 recs

Re: konerko available now?
I do not think Konerko would cost as much as you all think.  With a fairly big contract, coming off a down year, and PK exiting his prime, Kenny Williams doesn't have that much leverage.  KW is also looking for young but somewhat-established major league players.  The few players you do have which fit that bill definitely aren't on the market.  I feel if there was a trade between the Giants and White Sox, a third team would need to be involved.  Also, Joe Crede could be included because Josh Fields will be taking his place and you guys could use someone other than Aurilla (right?).

Re: konerko available now?
I don't want Konerko strictly based on the names that they are supposedly asking the Angels for. If the White Sox wanted to dump his salary on us, toss in Crede and not ask for Lincecum or Cain, I would be all ears.
Bring me a cleanup hitter please!!

Re: konerko available now?
I hope that the Angels acquire Konerko and do so quick. If this actually happens, it opens up a great possibility that the Giants could try to acquire Kotchman or Morales from the Angels because Konerko will play 1B, and there is no way Kotchman's bat profiles as a DH bat on a contending team, especially with their current logjam in Anaheim.

Explore the opportunities Sabean, this could get interesting.

Re: konerko available now?
I'd imagine Kotchman would be playing the field and Konerko would be DH'ing, if that was the case.

Kotchman is an amazing defender, way better than Konerko.

Re: konerko available now?
they plan to rotate vlad and anderson in the dh spot, konerko has to play 1st unless one of them learns to play catcher.

Re: konerko available now?
So that means either 10 mil/yr Matthews Jr sits the bench or 12 mil/yr Garret Anderson sits the bench. That surely makes a lot of sense?

by thejuice on Jan 5, 2008 4:02 PM PST   0 recs

Re: konerko available now?
If Konerko goes to the Angels I am sure Matthews will be part of the package going back to the WhiteSox.  The WhiteSox could use a real centerfielder so that they could play Swisher at 1B were his defensive talents are much better suited.  The Angels would then have Konerko as their DH and Wittits and Riveria as the backups for Anderson, Hunter, and Vlad in the outfield.

The Angels infield would not change a bit unless one of their infielders is also included in the package.  For example, I would not be suprised to see this petential trade expanded to include Figgins from the Angels and Crede and a prospect  from the WhiteSox.  I could very easily see both teams happy with the following starting lineups:

Angels:
Kendrick 2B
Hunter CF
Vlad RF
Anderson LF
Konerko DH
Kotchman 1B
Crede 3B
Napoli/Mathis C
Aybar/Izturis SS

WhiteSox:
Cabrera SS
Figgins 2B
Swisher 1B
Thome DH
Dye RF
Fields 3B
Matthews CF
Pierzynski C
Owens/Quentin LF

Re: konerko available now?
But don't they want to play Josh Fields at 1st or 3rd when they get rid of either Crede or Konerko?  And Swisher's perfectly fine in CF; that's why the A's usually always played him there, and that's also why the White Sox got him in the first place.  They have no intention of moving him to 1st.

by boonitez on Jan 5, 2008 5:38 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Re: konerko available now?
Yes, the WhiteSox want to find a fulltime starting position for Fields.  They do so with the trade I suggested at 3B.  The WhiteSox are willing to live with Swisher's centerfield defense but they can't possibly love it.  Nick is a below average defenisve centerfielder.  Yes, the WhiteSox told Nick he should expect to play mainly in CF.  But this of course assumes either Konerko or Fields is playing 1B.  IF the Angels can get a better defensive centerfielder and free up 1B for Swisher they get an above average defender at both CF and 1B instead of the below  average defenders they have now (Swisher in CF and Konerko at 1B).

by giantsrainman on Jan 5, 2008 5:47 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Re: konerko available now?
yea swisher is not a good cf.  the a's played him there becuase they had a bajillion injuries and you cant play jack cust or dan johnson in center.  he isnt awful, but he's far from good. the sox may just be saying swisher will play center to improve their leverage in a konerko deal.  i dont see why the angels giving up figgins and matthews for crede and konerko.

by sam23 on Jan 5, 2008 6:52 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Re: konerko available now?
The Angels are not happy with Matthews' HGH ties or with Figgins defense (weak arm) at 3B.  Your WhiteSox may have a better chance to pull this off then you think.

Re: konerko available now?
What is going to happen is:  The Angles will most likely trade Kendrick, santana, and Sheilds for Konerko and Crede.  Since the Angles have Juan Rivera as their DH Konerko would be playing 1st base.  That leaves Kotchman and/or Morales available (I'd much rather have Kendrick).  I think we could possibly land Kendrick for Noah Lowry or Jon Sanchez.

by the1 on Jan 5, 2008 6:13 PM PST   0 recs

Re: konerko available now?
kendrey?  kendrick is the 2b and no way we get HIM for lowry or sanchez.  and the angels currently have garrett anderson as their dh with vlad in right, matthews in left, and hunter in center.  rivera and willits are on the bench.

by sam23 on Jan 5, 2008 6:54 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Re: konerko available now?
I could see Kotchman maybe becoming available for a Sanchez-based deal, assuming of course that they do get Konerko.  But there's no chance in hell we'd ever get Kendrick for just Lowry or Sanchez.  They really want to hold on to him if they can, and they also don't really need pitching enough to do that.

by boonitez on Jan 5, 2008 8:08 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Re: konerko available now?
no way we get kendrick for anything not named lincecum or cain.  morales or kotchman would be upgrades over ort at first and it seems one would be available in exchange for a sanchez based deal if the angels get konerko, especially if they give up santana.

by sam23 on Jan 5, 2008 8:20 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Re: konerko available now?
Honestly, Kendrick isn't THAT good.  He hit only 11 HRs in just over 400 ABs.  His OBP is pretty good, and he plays decent D, but I wouldn't be willing to give up much more than Lowry/Sanchez + a prospect.

by the1 on Jan 5, 2008 8:36 PM PST   0 recs

Re: konerko available now?
wasnt saying we should, just that the angels view him the same way we view lincecum.  i dont think the chisox will get kendrick in any konerko deal even if crede comes with him.
