Chavy....?
It bugs the crap out of me when I have 2 diaries out of the last 10, but here it goes anyway. So the A's forked Nick Swisher over to the White Sox for a decent haul of prospects. So that proves that the A's are infact having a firesale of all their good players in order to begin a rebuilding process to one day in the next 3-4 years start seriously competing again. And as long as they're doing this, one would assume that they would want to clear all of the people close to not-young (to make room for the youngsters) and anyone that even remotely weighs down on the payroll (because there's no sense in wasting money when you're not competing), especially the later because the A's have absolutely no money behind them.
So could this be a good time for us to take advantage of the situation and try to take Eric Chavez from the A's, too? I think it'd be smart for us because it'd be a cheap pick up. Chavez is quite good when he's not injured, which isn't often. For the last 2 or 3 years, he's been pretty badly hampered by injuries. Last year he was limited to 90 games because of a torn labrum, damaged tissue in his shoulder, damaged bicep tendons, and the list goes on. This is why I think we should get him. He's far, far away from being a guarantee to start next year, and he's a pretty damn expensive risk for a player that might not start. He's set to make between 11-12 million next year. That's money that the A's have, but knowing them would probably rather not spend. So maybe we could offer a small package of a couple of our lower level pitching prospects like Billy Sadler, Sergio Romo, Nick Periera, etc. and maybe Jonathan Sanchez for Chavy. I think they'd bite because they wouldn't get much more for him and they would rather have him gone anyway because of all the money he makes. It would hugely benefit us because we would (if he can stay healthy with our decent medical staff) have a starting 3B with a decent bat and an excellent glove (he had 6 consecutive GG's at 3B prior to 07'). He'd fit right into lineup around the 3 or 4 hole. And the money would be far from a problem because there's a big heap of nothing on our payroll right now (save Zito/Rowand). What do you guys think?

If the Sabes were to overpay it's possible. I know their system could use a SS so maybe Sanchez, Sadler & Burriss could get it done. Probably not though because I imagine the Dodgers or Angels offering better players.

I've read conflicting stories about what the Bums are going to do for a 3B next season. They were going hard for Cabrera. They were also rumored to have talked to the Cards about Rolen. However after they signed Andruw Jones they said they'd use internal options at third base.

However, for a Beane guy, I'm kind of shocked at that .347 career OBP. And he's a left handed hitter who would probably lose a fair amount of power in the house that Bonds built. And there's that contract. And the injury history. And he's 30-- not ancient, but certainly not the fabled young talent we've been starved for. And the fact that we'd have to give up something to get him.
Oh, and now we'd have to find a way to unload Durham, so that Franny could have a spot to play.
Frankly, I don't see it happening. Sure, he could be had given the firesale in the East Bay, but I'm just not sure he's the right guy for us, unless the price were exceptionally low.

Re: Chavy....?
Between brokedown Chavez, a 40+ yr old Vizquel, and day-to-day Ray Durham, I think Kevin Frandsen would be a lock for 500 at bats.
i agree that it'd be nice if the price were lower, but Beane's smarter than that. I really don't see the Giants having the resources to pull off a trade that will garner a major-league ready or even a AAA prospect at third, so help is going to be far away at that position. Sounds like Dallas McPherson fell off the radar, as did Rolen -- although he was going to be just as expensive and risky.
The more I think about it, the more I can see this move happening. Steal a bit of the A's fan base, fill a hole in the defense and the lineup, and Sabean still gets to satisfy his fetish of overpaying for players that were good several years ago.

For the record I still think Omar's signing sealed Pedro's Fate with the Giants, Chavez or no Chavez. This is in no way to be taken as advocating for Feliz at this point. Sabean's refusal to shut the door on Feliz (even with his 3 year demands) is a bit unnerving though and occasionally forces me to think I might be wrong with the Omar or Pedro thinking.
Re: Chavy....?
Beane passed on Giambi, Tejada, Isringhausen, Foulke, Hudson, and Mulder...but Chavez he kept. Chavy has been his BFF ever since he put on an A's uni. When superstars were leaving that franchise left and right, Beane made sure he kept Eric Chavez. I'm just sayin' that a guy as proud as Billy Beane probably won't look to give away the player he has put so much stock into.

"I told Billy [Beane], 'I know what you're doing, if you want to move me, do what you have to do,'" Chavez said. "It's motivation to get healthy, play well and then see what happens. To be honest, with everything that's going on, there's probably no reason for me to stay around, it doesn't add up with what's happening." Chavez is signed through 2010 at an average of $11.5 million per season.
Re: Chavy....?
The Giants would have to overpay by a lot in order to get any player from Beane, no thanks, we need other teams overpaying us, not the other way around.

Re: Chavy....?
Truer words were never spoken. I just can't get amped up to see us overpay for another team's broken down savvy veteran. I want us to hold onto our best young prospects, not give them away because we want someone in the middle of our lineup in 2008. I get it sucks to have Molina as our 4th hitter in our lineup, but I'd rather that than part with more and more upcoming talent.
Just a personal opinion.

Come July a healthy half season from Chavez and he will probably look mighty tempting to some possible contenders. Of coarse Beane might be thinking that way as well.
Re: Chavy....?
Beane is unloading his players for prospects.
If we get Chavez, we'll have to unload prospects.
Why do we want guys who we have to give up prospects to get? I suppose the real thing is that Beane is interested in near mlb ready prospects, and those are by and large not the guys we care about holding onto, so it might work. If it's a trade involving some of our marginal AAAA guys, I could see it working out very very well for us (Chavez being >>> Feliz, especially for potentially leading the league in not being Pedro Feliz), but I don't know what players and positions the A's would be targeting. It all depends on who is going Oakland's way.
