You are probably right, but feliz fits well on the Phil's. I mean the first 5 hitters have OBP's near or above 400, so he is not expected to get on base, or hit in the top 6. Honestly there are few better fits for feliz.

Re: Phillies Sign Feliz
Actually, I bet he hits 35 home runs, but has 150 strike outs. He has no incentive for plate discipline in that lineup. Good signing for the Phillies, good closure for the Giants.

Who's going to play 3rd for the Giants? Who cares? Just as long as the poor hack plays defense. Start the clock on Villalona - there's no long term contract blocking his path to the big leagues.

30-35 seems probable.  Last year RHB hit HR with a park factor 145 in Philly; 136 for the last 3 years.  In SF, 74 for 2007, 84 for the last 3 years.

Re: Phillies Sign Feliz
No he won't. Fleas didn't hit warning track shots that died. He hit weak ass grounders to SS. That won't keep him from trying though, so his punchouts will probably revert back to a very high number.

Like I said, his problem wasn't warning track power, its swinging at shit down and away.

Re: Phillies Sign Feliz
What will increase Happy Pete's totals is that he can now take outside pitches to rightfield and still hit them out of the ball park.  I look for Pedro to get an extra 10 hits in Philly (5 bombs and 5 singles) by being willing to go more to the opposite field.  This will increase his BA by 17 points (252 to 269) his SLG by 41 points (433 to 464) and his OBP by 13 points (288 to 301).

The Phillies and their fans are going to be very happy with Happy Pete's Gold Glove level defense and the improved offense this change in ballparks allows him to make in his approach to outside pitches.

Re: Phillies Sign Feliz
Yes, I'm sure when Pedro sees those short porches the first thing he'll think is "hey, I can hit HR going the other way now".  Or just MAYBE he'll focus more on trying to yank the ball for power, resulting in a reversion to hacking at slop.  Boy, I just don't know which one I'd bet on.

Re: Phillies Sign Feliz
At AT&T Pedro could not hit it out to right and neither could any other righy.  But he will be able to atn Citizens and that will make all the difference.  Why wouldn't he try to go to right more if he could also hit it out to right?

by giantsrainman on Jan 29, 2008 11:29 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Re: Phillies Sign Feliz
I don't follow the logic. Maybe he couldn't hit it out to right at Mays' Field, but if Pedro had gone to right more he would have had more hits, RBI, and better OBP. No matter where he plays, if he is trying to hit every ball out of the park he will be the same old Pedro in Philly that he was here.

Re: Phillies Sign Feliz
I'm sure this will shock you, but Pedro's career OPS batting 4th is .818.  Batting 7th it is .709.  If Pedro's career OPS were .818 instead of its actual .721, Pedro likely would still be a Giant -- or have moved on with a contract exceeding $30 million over three years.

I love Pedro Feliz as a man, but haven't liked him as a player from the start.  Still, there are many misunderstandings about the man among the Giants' fandom.

Re: Phillies Sign Feliz
It's not that he would've bit better or worse down in the lineup...it's that he should've been there all along.  Aside from that, he didn't really bat that much from #4 anyway...chances are those stats would've evened out as well.

None of these guys hold a candle to last year's GIDP/PA Champion.  Kevin Frandsen lead the Giants in GIDP/PA with 17 in 298 PAs.  That is one every 17.53 Plate Appearances!  You guys all forgot the old axium that you better be careful what you wish for.  You got it, so now you all have to live with it!

Oh I see.  Veterans who always have 3 or more seasons of data are acceptable targets for riping with stats but Youngsters that don't are not.  Pretty damm selective in your use of stats aren't you!

by giantsrainman on Jan 28, 2008 8:51 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Re: You Should Of Been Careful.
Nah, I'm just saying 298 ABs isn't a lot for anybody. If ResDog had cited Durham's last 298 ABs as his evidence for that, I would have said the same thing to him. A two week slump or equivalent streak can greatly damage the accuracy and credibility of any sample size significantly lower than, say, 450 ABs (which is still dangerously small).

I could turn the same argument on you, though. Frandsen's last 300 PA are worth scrutinizing, but his 100+ from the year before aren't worth playing in the equation? That's awfully selective of you, sir! I mean, when you incorporate the other 100 PAs those numbers skyrocket to almost exactly 1 GIDP every 20 PAs!

Obviously I'm taking this with some jest here. 1 in 20 is only marginally better than 1 in 17, and both are awful compared to 1 in 30, but this isn't really a case of giving youngsters a pass and ripping Vets. It's more a case of holding to the basic integrity of the law of sample size.

Over his minor league career, (about 1025 PAs or so), Frandsen averaged about 1 GIDP every 33 ABs, which, yeah, is a Minor League number, but which is also significantly less prone to being impacted by unsightly outliers.

This still leads us to believe that Frandsen could easily be the GIDP Leader of your 2008 Local Sports Team, so I'm obviously not in disagreement with your ultimate conclusion. It's the method, which cherry picks half a year's worth of Kevin's worst stretch with that particular stat in his career and tries to compare it to 3 years worth of data on other guys.

Re: You Should Of Been Careful.
When I say half a year for Frandsen, also, I'm not being accurate. It's half a year's equivalent of starting (assuming a full year starting is roughly 600 or so PAs), but it was, in fact, Kevin's entire year... minus Fresno time....

Re: You Should Of Been Careful.
GiDPs aren't a good evaluation tool for hitters. What high numbers of GiDPs say about a hitter are:
  1. Is probably an un-speedy right-handed hitter.
  2. Makes a lot contact.
  3. Hits the ball hard.
  4. Hits with a lot of runners on in front of him.
You can make the argument that the hitter isn't patient, but most of the time these are RBI guys who aren't paid to take BBs, but put the ball into play.

Being right-handed is a neutral, being unspeedy is a negative, but everything else is a positive.

GiDPs are bad things but the hitter with the most isn't necessarily a bad hitter.

No, the difference is that Ryan Klesko can manipulate time and space, whereas Hiro Nakamura is an aging athlete with a bad shoulder.

I may have those confused, but I'm pretty sure neither belongs on the 2008 SF Giants.

always a class act and a good guy, willing to go to great lengths (ie catching) to help the team.  Loved his power and defense but he was so clueless at the plate that I don't think I could have stayed sane watching him for another entire season.  He does make sense for the Phillies and this saves Sabean from himself (hopefully).

The bad news is this might make Sabean think he really has to trade for a "major league proven" third baseman.  That would suck.  Dallas McPherson, or anybody else please.

I always thought Pedro handled things admirably. Pretty much kept his mouth shut, showed up ready to play ball every day. Always stayed positive, even while taking a boatload of criticism. When Larry Krueger leveled his infamous blast, Feliz (who, more than anyone else, was undoubtedly the one to whom Krueger was referring), was the only one who pretty much took the whole thing in stride.

Re: Phillies Sign Feliz
I guess they have schools there for Feliz's kids.

Lot of people say he was a class act, but his comment about "other cities have schools too" was pretty classless to me.  It was he who brought up the reason why he wanted to be back with the Giants the other season, so it was legit for reporters to ask him that - he didn't have to give such a snotty answer.

Also, every year, he promises that he has turned a new leaf, that he's been training hard during the off-season, that he's doing some new thing that will make him a better hitter, and every year, it's the same old thing, only older and worse, at least offensively - I do credit him for making himself so good defensively.

And the Phillies make total sense, they were one of two teams that had worse production coming out of 3B in 2007 than the Giants, but they are competing while Pirates are not.  So as bad as Feliz is, he is an upgrade for the Phillies both offensively (though marginally so) and defensively.  He would also at least double and perhaps triple the number of HR hit at 3B for the Phillies, vs. 2007.

I wouldn't boo but I'm glad he's gone, I'm glad we got a draft pick, I'm glad that Frandsen's a step closer to starting at 3B, though I suspect a trade sometime in spring training to get a starting 3B.

I'm not sad to see him go, but despite his one unfortunate (and clearly frustrated) comment, he truly is a classy guy.

Pedro played a lot of positions (six, actually) for the Giants.  He seldom if ever complained.  His limitations as a hitter made him difficult to embrace, but there were few finer men on the team IMO.  Few knew what Pedro endured to get to where he is.

Re: Phillies Sign Feliz
Now that this has settled in, I can admit he wasn't a bad guy. The situation in Philly seems ideal, where they had worse offensive output and no D from 3B. He wasn't a fit on a team with a terrible offense that is trying to get younger. I hope he wins a Gold Glove on the East Coast, because he deserved it in '07.
Maybe, he translates his cut in strikeouts last year into 6 more walks (one a month) and knocks a few more doubles and homers in Citizens. He could hit .270 again! .305 OBP!
What I love about this most is it has the APPEARANCE of rebuilding, which is more than we've seen up until now. Free pick, 600 AB's for Frandsen and... Aurilia.

Yeah, I'm thinking he goes 25 to 27 HRs in 2008. Pedro has good power to right-center, he would display it on the road from time to time, but for obvious reasons he doesn't go there at AT&T. So with that added confidence he'll probably add 10 points on his average. That Phillie lineup should be a fun,  yet hack-tastic, lineup to watch.

One Of The Lessons Learned
Most players will not accept a reduction in pay from their current team even if they can't get the same pay or a raise from anyone else.  Most players will take an even bigger reduction in pay from a new team rather then swallow their pride and accept the judgement of thier current team that a reduction in pay is warrented.

I don't think this is unique to the currently not so "Happy Pete".  You don't make it in the big leagues without an ego and ego will rarely allow things to go any other way.  The same thing happened with Rich Aurilia when he left after 2003.  Players like JT Snow who after 2003 recognized and accepted that his value had decreased and thus choose to stay with his current team at a reduced level of pay are a very rare breed indeed.

Good call, Rainman.

Also, since October, Sabean had been less than "classy" with his in-the-press negotiations with Pedro, as if he were daring him publicly to find a better deal. That is a tactic which worked last year, but maybe Pedro got fed up with it. Good for Pete, if so.

It's almost as if Brian were trying to show the media  -- and crowds like the one on this site -- that he's one tough GM hombre to deal with.

Most of his recent contracts prove otherwise, however.

A tender kiss on Pedro's scruffy cheek, I think, would have helped.

Re: One Of The Lessons Learned
I thought of that a while back. I also thought  if I was in Pedro's shoes ( like I ever had a 1/1000th of that talent) being age  33 and some what of a specialist  this might be the last chance  to play  for a post season contender.  It has to suck being a young dead red hitter watching Dunston flail away in the `02 post season and realize that's the closest you are going to get to a post season success if you re-upped with the current Giants.

Yes I would take less money  for the chance to wipe away the taste of "6 outs away".

Multiple Choice: 3B
I love this inaction by the Giants, because it opens the door this spring for:

a. Frandsen
b. Aurilia
c. Durham
d. Joe Crede
e. Dallas McPherson
f. Tony Zuniga
g. pick from a-f; no other options exist

Derin McMains had five fingers, but he only used three.

I can't believe you played the Zuniga card!

Re: Phillies Sign Feliz
Thank god. But Frandsen can't play this position. Do we have someone in the minor leagues who can pull it off?
Hands off Tim.

Re: Phillies Sign Feliz
Why can't Frandsen play 3B.  He played it in College and was selected as his league's best defensive 3B.  So, just what is your basis for making this statement so assuredly?

Re: Phillies Sign Feliz
Barring some miracle signing, Frandsen really is as good as it gets to play 3b for us. And he can play 3b. He can play every position from 2b to 3b. Or, at least, he has in the past.

No Miracle Signing Required
The countdown to Sanchez for Crede has already begun.  When it happens all you rejoicing now will be eating crow.

Re: No Miracle Signing Required
I wouldn't trade Jonathan for Joe.  The White Sox are supposed to be the fleecees, not the fleecers.

Re: No Miracle Signing Required
Never said I would.  Just said that I think the Giants will.  Perhaps not Sanchez but a young pitcher or prospect that most of us would rather just keep then trade for Crede.  As I have said elsewhere, I would trade Roberts or Aurilia and Kline for Crede (veteran or veterans for veteran, contract or contracts for contract) but I don't think this is what the Giants are likely to do.

You would actually give up as much as Dave Roberts for Joe Crede?  :)

Re: Phillies Sign Feliz
WOWIE!!  It's news like this that is almost enough to force me out of my lucid winter hibernation.  ALMOST.

Piss off Pete Happy, and as for you Mr. Sabes...count yourself lucky, you ignorant bastard.  This offseason you've shown us that you have no plan for the foreseeable future, but in letting Pedro take a walk, this is clearly an addition by subtraction kind of thing.

Screw the Giants, but not Omar. I'm getting drunk and watching some footy.

Re: Phillies Sign Feliz
Reapeating what others have said, that's great news. Feliz didn't make sense on this current team & picking up a sandwich pick is good. Feliz will be a good signing for the Phillies and be a good fit.

The only worrying thing is that we trade for Crede instead which could end up being an even worse decision than bringing Pedro back.

Re: Phillies Sign Feliz
Assuming the Giants don't acquire another third baseman (which I think they indeed will do), Kevin Frandsen's chances of getting lots of at bats just increased.  With the Giants needing to develop good, young position players, I don't see that as a bad thing.

But I suspect they will add another third baseman and quite possibly a first baseman, as well.

They can only do either/or, one but not the other.

Re: Phillies Sign Feliz
The worst part is Sabean has already said, just this week, he was pretty disinclined to sign a 1b, meaning he's pretty comfortable going into the season with Ort/Aurilia.  He's made no such statement regarding 3b.  That strikes me as ass backwards.  We have virtually nothing in the system beyond Ort/Aurilia for 1b.  We have many more MIFs in the system, such that we have Frandsen/Aurlia for 3b as well as Leone (I think McClain is no longer with us), as well as Ochoa and Velez for MIFs.  And, still, I think he is going to sign a 3b.  If he were to sign a LH hitting 3b that would make some sense, but, another RH hitting 3b does nothing more than take ABs awau from Frandsen.

Re: Phillies Sign Feliz
Here Allfrank we part company.  We still have McClain (but at 35 I don't think this matters much) but more importantly we have other corner outfielders besides Ortmeier that can be moved to 1B like Schierholtz and Bowker.  I just don't see how you could see the likes of Leone and Ochoa as players you really want to give any major league ABs to and Velez and the Giants are far better off with Velez playing 2B everyday in Fresno then either are with Velez added to the 3B mix.

Bottom line as I see it is that signing or trading for a stopgap 3B makes far more sense then signing or trading for a stopgap 1B.

Re: Phillies Sign Feliz
Maybe, if you are saying we have enough coverage with Ort/Aurilia/Ishikawa.  I just think Frandsen is more proven, more likely to succeed than Ort.  And I think there is less than a 5% chance Schierholtz or Bowker get moved to 1b this year.
My issue is I don't want this 25 spot on the roster to be someone who takes playing time away from Frandsen - or Ort - unless they were also a young prospect, a la MacPherson.

Re: Phillies Sign Feliz
IMO the Giants are short at third base and woefully short at first.  Actually, it's pretty bad at EACH position.

I have no problem though giving Frandsen a shot at third base and Ortmeier or Schierholtz at first.  Might as well see what the young guys can do.

If the Giants had left Nate at the hot corner, they would indeed now have an opening there for him.

Incidentally, the Giants started Jack Clark out as a third baseman.  He played the position all the way through the AA Texas League.  He led all Texas League third basemen both in fielding percentage and in errors.  Anyone want to take a guess as to how that seemingly impossible combination could have happened?
