Relief?

We all saw the stat about how we blew a lot of games last year that we were within a run or two.  So instead of everyone talking about what hitter to trade for I say we also need to look for a reliever to help out our bullpen cause just relying on Tyler Walker being back up is not going to solve the problem.

Jorge Julio is a righty reliever who is 29 years old (in Giants terms thats the mere age of 11).
Career 4.35 era, over his career he has averaged just about a strikeout per inning.
Last year he got off to a rough start with FLA, but then went to COL where in 52 innings he had a 5 to 2 K to BB ratio, an ERA of 3.93 and struck out 50 batters.  In 2006 his ERA was 4.23 with a 8 to 3 K to BB ratio.

Then we have 3 great relievers for the 7th and 8th inning in Julio, Hennessey and Walker.

I say 2 year deal worth 8 or 10 million plus a club option for the 3rd year.

Re: 99 CAREER SAVES!!!!!!!!!!!11ein
That's probably a little misleading, because he's spent some time as a middle reliever/set up man as well, which means he'll get credit for a blown save but holds are not included in his Save Ops.

In any case, Natto was just referring to the excitement by the Rockies announcers when they acquired JORGE JULIO!!!1!!! back in May because he had 99 CAREER SAVES!!!!!11!!!!11

Re: Relief?
Jorge Julio reminds me a lot of Armando Benitez.  Hard throwing right-hander that came up with Baltimore, pitched with the Mets and Florida, and most importantly, is adept at blowing a nice lead.

In other words, "do not want."  Mostly because he really reminds me too much of Benitez.

holy crap that's a bad idea.  relief pitching is priority #46 now anyway.

Re: Relief?
I'm not an advocate of spending alot of money on relief pitching, but still, I don't think that's necessarily true. If pitching is going to be the strength of the team (and frankly I think ours is a little overrated) then it is concerning that our bullpen (which probably pitches some 30% of our innings) was by pretty much any statistical measurement the worst in the division last year. And I don't think "all the young guys will just naturally improve because they have a year more experience" is very logically sound (ironically, it's also inherently a very Sabean-esque theorem).

Since relievers of any age have a tendency toward wild performance swings, my philosophy is always bring as many cheap arms to the dance as possible, try not to marry yourself to much guaranteed money, and see what sticks.

My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.

Re: Relief?
I agree.  But Jorge Julio isn't a cheap arm.  He just ought to be.

Re: Relief?
No thanks, if he came very cheap(~1M), he might be worth a look but he certainly won't so we should stay clear. We've got enough options for the bullpen, it only makes sense to spend decent if we're getting a clear upgrade.

Re: Relief?
2 years at 8 or 10 big for someone who has been on 4 teams in the last 2 years? The same person who was traded for Byung-Hyun Kim?

I don't know if anyone throws a straighter high 90's fast ball than Julio...

How about we offer him a minor league deal for 400k (may be too high) and a spring training invite a la Russ Ortiz. I know it wont happen because someone will give him a couple million.

Speaking of Russ, outside of Yabu, do we have any veteran pitchers who have a chance of making the team out of spring?

Re: Relief?
ONLY clear upgrades wanted.  I'm betting you can get a 4.35 ERA out of any number of our middle relievers, plus a very good handful of our minor league callups.

Re: Relief?
Im more comfortable with Messenger, Walker and Wilson. Forget Julio only at a ceap price.

Did someone say he throws a staightest fastball in the majors? Does he picth inside, or just try in nibble the outside corners? Cuz if not we should bring him in and give him F-Rod's old jersy.

Re: Relief?
With relief pitching, it's very possible to find guys for cheap that will come in and be a good to very good middle relief pitcher (or even closer).  Just off the top of my head, examples include Brendan Donnelly, Rudy Seanez, Joe Kennedy, Jason Isringhausen, (and even here with the Giants) Scott Eyre.

Yes, finding relief pitching like this includes luck, but it shows that if you have a good eye for pitching (plus a little luck), then you don't have to spend a bunch of money for a top-rate bullpen.

As for our current bullpen, we have a good, cheap start with Wilson, Hennessey and Walker.  Maybe Sadler pulls a Wilson next year.  Making it four good pitchers in the bullpen.

I'm not sure what young guys with potential there are out there or veterans with a shot of surprising, but there are many, many better options than Jorge Julio.

Only 972 games until the end of Zito's contract.

Yeah, middle relievers of Jorge Julio ilk are almost interchangeable, as harsh as that may sound.

Re: Relief?
Relying on Tyler Walker for backup makes a lot of sense.  The 1.26 ERA he had in his stint with us last year backs that statement up.  We need hitters far, far more than we do relievers.  Relief shouldn't be as terrible this year because we have Chulk, who is mediocre, Messenger, who was doing great for a while last season, Kline, who is mediocre, Hennesey, who is decent, Wilson, who is pretty good I'd say, and Walker, who seems to be back to health.  Our bullpen seems good enough for a team that isn't competing.  Adding a vet reliever makes no sense because we could be giving that extra bullpen spot to all the prospects we have in the lower levels to give them a taste of the majors.  And Jorge Julio sucks.  No thank you.
