Help Wanted: 1st and 3rd

The Giants are getting desperate for two gaping holes in their infield.  First, who's on first? I say if Rich Arulia can stay healthy, let him play there while Dan Ortmeier is groomed to be the every day 1B. I am confident that ORT will find his way into filling that spot nicely. He's got a good baseball head on his shoulders, and has the right help (J.T. Snow) to help him.

Third Base is where I'm scared. I see what we've been subjected to with Pedro Feliz, and as much as I appreciate a guy giving us a little pop in the 7 spot, and a cannon for an arm, I hate the fact that he still hits .250-ish in his best years. Heck, he's been one of the best players on the team for a couple years, but it's time to move forward, and he wants a 3 year contract... I don't think so. I got all hyped up on Miguel Cabrera and then realized that Tampa Bay would be looking for one of either Cain or Lincecum as bait and I quickly let that bandwagon pass right on by. I flirted around with the Mike Lowell thought but that wouldn't happen because Boston wouldn't let him go. The Yankees re-signed A-Rod after some harsh words between the two, because, hey, they're the only ones who could afford a $275,000,000 (275 Million) - 10 Year contract for the slugger.

We still need a 3rd Baseman...

I heard rumorings of Joe Crede being expendable from the Chicago White Sox...
and how Ron Schueler was the Sox's GM during Crede's first few minor league seasons...
and how Arron Rowand played with Crede on the Sox's World Series team...
and how they are rumored to be best of friends...

ChiSox have Josh Fields, their new shiny playtoy-third baseman and now Crede is a 3rd guest at a dinner for 2.

Anyone else thinking this???

Crede
Anyone else thinking this?  Jeezus dude!  How many diaries about Joe Crede do we need for you to figure out that everybody here has given this thought, time after time after time.  Any ideas nobody has thought of before?

Sounds good until you think about what you have to give up to get him- exactly what everyone said when the topic was brought up several months ago.  And you damned, silly goose.  Cabrera was on the Marlins.

Why not make a push for Konerko, he is signed for 3 years and is better than crede

Re: Help Wanted: 1st and 3rd
weirdly enough, Konerko plays first base.  Therefore, he wouldn't really solve that third base conundrum.  for first? Why?  we don't need him and would have to give up a lot to get him.

nice signature, though.

Pedro Feliz: Marginally better this year.

Konerko
Could SF then flip Konerko to Angels for some of their young talent?

Re: Konerko
konerko would cost us more than Lowry.  And then we couldn't sell him for high enough to the Angels.

A three way deal is possible-ish.  Double flips are pretty rare, though.

Flipping
And then, too, remember that we're talking about Brian Sabean, the Non-Flip Master.

Re: Konerko
3-way deal...interesting, hadnt thought that before.  either kotchman or morales would be an upgrade over ort. lowry and figgins/matthews jr to the sox, konerko to angels, kotchman to giants?  itll never happen but its an entertaining thought.

Re: Help Wanted: 1st and 3rd
We've been over the "No on Proposition Crede" thing quite a few times. Also, Otmeier has virtually no chance at being a valuable third baseman for any team in the long term.

It's probably best right now just to stand pat and see if we can blow a wad on an impact corner player next year. With the unbelievably optimistic exception of trading beans for Fields, our best 1st and 3rd options in 2008 are seriously Frandsen, Aurilia, Ortmeier, Feliz, and McPherson.*

And nobody really wants to watch Feliz again if we can give Frandsen a shot instead, and McPherson is looking more and more like a non-option with every day. That only leaves guys who are already on the roster.

But crede is basically Pedro Feliz. Why should we trade for a Feliz replica when we can just sign the real thing without giving up arms?

*Possible exception to this being the increasingly unlikely trade with the Reds for Encarnacion.

In that first line I mean to say first base for Ort and not Third, although the sentence is no less true as written.

Forget about the infield.  What about the gaping hole in center?  Who's gonna fill that?
Nate Schierholtz cannot play third base. Nate Schierholtz cannot play third base. Steve Kline is pretty okay. Nate Schierholtz cannot play third base.

Re: Help Wanted: 1st and 3rd
Can we invite one of the other dinner guests over instead?

And I don't see Ort as being "groomed" to fill 1B long term. I don't think his ceiling comes close to being league average at the most offensively demanding position, even if so many people think that JT can turn apes into gold glovers. I still hope he gets 500 AB's this year.

Re: Help Wanted: 1st and 3rd
Maybe Ort and Franny will get their shots, I won't believe it until I see but...

"General manager Brian Sabean said Wednesday he fully expects manager Bruce Bochy to give the younger players lots of starts.

"I think at this point it looks favorable," Sabean said. "I think the players realize that, and Boch and the coaching staff realize the transition we're in. To not give guys like Frandsen and Ortmeier a chance to play, in the phase we're in, would be counterproductive."

Which is not to say their jobs are stamped in ink. Sabean said he remains in the trade market, and to a lesser extent the free-agent market, in a search for offense and a regular third baseman - and the roster should be considered "fluid" into spring training and even beyond."

Oh, and a Pedro Feliz update...

"Pedro Feliz apparently is gone, with Sabean saying, "We made a two-year offer, which he rejected. We've pretty much moved on from there." There are other third baseman coming off injuries who might be available via trade - most notably Joe Crede and the already-dealt Scott Rolen, and Sabean acknowledged he is monitoring them."

I also won't believe that until I see it as well.

Am I wrong in reading this as the OP thinks Miguel Cabrera was on the Rays?

Also, if the -Marlins- had been willing to give us Cabrera for one of Caincecum I would've been all about it.

Re: Help Wanted: 1st and 3rd
Yes, in my weakened state of mind, I made an error on the fact that M.Cabrera was on the Marlins, I just wrote the first one of those damned florida teams I thought of.

I still stand by my thoughts on Crede.  I've talked to ChiSox fans who are in love with Crede, and would love to have him back, but think that their new kid is the answer at their 3B.  So, why not?  He hits better than Feliz if you actually look at his stats.  He's bats Right.  He's got a cannon, and is quick on his feet.  What's not to like.  He shouldn't cost Cain/Lincecum after coming off of back surgery last year.

Maybe...

I will be content with what we've got if in Spring Training I see what we have show some signs of life and not booting every third ball hit their way, but until then I can dream, and it's not too far off from what I can see.

If I owned this place and Hell, I'd rent this out and live in Hell...

Coming off back surgery
And while he is a better hitter than Feliz, he isn't that much better.

His career OPS is about 30 points better than Feliz'. Career OPS+ of 92 to 84. That is roughly about 6 runs over a full season.

He is in his last year of his pre FA contract, so it isn't as if he is under cheap control for the next several years.

Re: Help Wanted: 1st and 3rd
change is good, fresh starts are good. neither of those is possible with feliz
crede may be worse than feliz, im willing to take that chance for the chance at something better
go get crede for as little as possible in st when he proves his temporary health and lets hope for the best.
thank god the patriots dont have the giants' first round pick too
