OT: Own a Baseball Player

Well, not quite.  You can actually buy shares of 4% of Indians minor league relief pitcher Randy Newsom's future major league earnings.  I haven't worked out the math myself, but the site where I found this indicated that he would need to make $1.25 million for this to be worthwhile at $20 a share.  Anyone know anything about this guy and whether he's likely to ever see the majors?

Re: OT: Own a Baseball Player
Pretty poor peripherals in the minors. He keeps the ball in the yard, likely because of his sidearm delivery. A big problem is that he doesn't strike out enough guys to be worth too much. Too old for his level, too. 26 this coming year, he'll likely make his debut in AAA. His ERA generally looks nice and shiny, likely due to the homerun tendencies and the weak level of competition he faces compared to his age.

Took a look at some of the video they linked. The site lists him as a submariner pitcher, but he has a sort of sidearm "slingshot" delivery that's seems to mostly be dependent on whipping his elbow. The motion looks very fluid but like he doesn't get much strength behind it. Not much leg movement either, so the power really seems to be reliant on the arm.

I'd say he's pretty unlikely to have much a major league career. He might see some time in the show on occasion (see: September), but I'd hazard a guess and say he's unlikely to have much more than a journeyman's career at best. He might be able to carve out a niche as a fringe ROOGY, and I'd be curious to see his BABIP or GB% numbers, though.

Personally, I wouldn't count on him ever making much more than league minimum. Still, it's a pretty neat idea, and you never know what could happen.
