Jim Callis (BA) Mock 1-5 picks, Justin Smoak for us

Jim Callis has a mock 1-5 picks in his Ask BA column. He has Justin Smoak for us. Personally I rather have Yonder Alonso.

Re: Mock Justin Smoak for us
Hot and Sour for me!

I'm a very amateur soup-maker, and will get much much better when I have my own kitchen, but when I learn how to make a good Hot and Sour soup with any consistency, my life will likely be complete.

Probably Miso. Or Clam Chowder.

Re: Mock Justin Smoak for us
Biff Pocoroba made some beef barley this weekend that a) tasted fantastic, and b) gave me once-in-a-generation gas, so it's a soup that should at least be in the conversation.

(I know, I know...it's become an internet cliche to mention Biff Pocoroba, beef barley, and flatulence. Sorry.)

Clam chowder, even though I don't particularly care for clams.

Re: Mock Justin Smoak for us
A good new England Clam Chowder.

I've been on something of a soup making kick lately, I made some New England Clam Chowder last week and last night I made a really good cream of broccoli and mushroom soup.

I'm going to try to make Wonton soup next.

I have to go spit pea, but a good hot and sour is certainly tempting.

I like seeing a good split pea man among us. Are you of the ham variety, or no?

Re: Mock Justin Smoak for us
When it comes to split pea, I'm not really down with anything that can't be sopped up with the better part of a loaf of sourdough, so no. I usually make mine with a couple ham hocks, but they always end up in the dog's bowl.

Re: Mock Justin Smoak for us
those are a lot of good soups.  being vegetarian my soup choices have become more limited.  I like something brothy rather than thick or pureed.  Maybe my faves are hot and sour or miso. bean soups and spit pea are also great (if hard to find sometimes without a big ham bone.)

Good call!  Mrs. Goofus is half-creole and makes a good one.

I also like lobster bisque and tom kha (the Thai stuff, i think that's how it's spelled).

I'm not a big soup eater, but when I go to San Francisco that place Boudin's with the chili in the sourdough bread bowl is just awesome. I ate there four times in the nine days I was out there last year.
