An Eye Turner for our GM

Now I know there has been many diary's about Edwin Encarnacion, but i have a question for my fellow Giants fans.  With Encarnacion dominating in the Dominican Winter League (I know the skill level isnt that high as opposed to MLB but it is still something to look at) Do you guys see this as enough to grab Brian's attention and have him not look at hurt 3B and look at one to get before spring training.

So my question to you is:
Is a young 3B who has promise and can play as an everyday starting 3B who just hit two three-run homers on a seven-RBI night in the Finals and is under control through 2011, enough to get Brian on the phone? What do you think it would take?

Re: An Eye Turner for our GM
Here's the problem with being fans. We don't know exactly what Brian Sabean has and has not talked to or about. We don't know what his plans are or have been, all we know is there hasn't been much action, which makes it look like he's done nothing.

Perhaps he's trying to be prudent and is waiting for the right moves because we're in no rush right now. In the past two years he quickly pieced together teams in an off-season and it turned into bad contracts and players.

Or perhaps not...

we just don't know. We can't judge him on moves he hasn't made

Re: An Eye Turner for our GM
Sabean just evaluates players differently than we do.  He's not much for "statistics" or for "projection."

Re: An Eye Turner for our GM
Do we really know the Reds are even willing to trade Encarnacion?  It's not like they have to. I would think that kind of performance would turn Krivsky's head too.  The price probably just went from Noah Lowry plus Henry Sosa to Tim Lincecum plus Sosa and Clayton Tanner.

Re: An Eye Turner for our GM
if the price is really that high then the reds have their heads in their asses as usual
you will suffer humiliation when the sports team from my area defeats the sports team from your area

Heads Up Their Asses?
I don't think so.  I mean, we all seem to want Encarnacion.  Why wouldn't the asking price be steep?  It's not like Keppinger is the perfect replacement so they would reasonably want a serious upgrade at pitcher before they'd downgrade 3B.

Re: An Eye Turner for our GM
The Reds also just signed Jeremy Affeldt for cheap as insurance in case one of their kids isn't ready for the rotation.  They are even less likely to want Lowry now

Re: An Eye Turner for our GM
They're also still talking to the Orioles about Bedard. I agree that the more he hits in the winter leagues, the less likely it is for the Reds to trade him. It seems like nobody wants Noah. Fuck 'em all. I'll laugh when Noah is beating them next season.

Re: An Eye Turner for our GM
Number of left handed Starters on Reds staff - 0. Number of left handed projects that might be starting - 2 ( Liningston & Affeldt). Their rotation is extremely right hander heavy in a very open division.  So yes there  is motivation and a reason for the Reds to like Lowry. Whether they act on it is another thing.

Re: An Eye Turner for our GM
It's easy to get excited about a guy like Encarnacion.  But I doubt the Reds don't give him up unless they A. get high value for him or B. see enough of him and give up on him...then try to play con-man.  Sabean probably has to let things play out into the season since injuries can let him unload un-need veterans.  Then once we flounder and have to let the young guys play, the real season for us will start.

Re: An Eye Turner for our GM
i guess im one of the few who isnt real big on encarnacion.  i get that he's much better than what we have now and young and under contract for several more seasons.  but from the limited number of reds games i saw, i just dont love his lack of hustle and general attitude and i dont think he's enough of an impact hitter to make up for that (like bonds was).  if the price is much more than lowry, and it surely will be, im not real eager.

Re: An Eye Turner for our GM
I value your opinion from having watched Encarnacion a fair amount.

I just think the Giants ( or us fans) need to avoid the  " how does player X replace the teams last super star trap." There will be no replacement Bonds, or Rickey Henderson, or Ted Williams  etc.  A team, or fan base, gets to into this alluring trap and the miss the next couple really good things  very easily. I  am probably picking nits here  and it not aimed at you personally as much as us  ( the fan base) as a whole.

Re: An Eye Turner for our GM
I'd amend this by saying that there will be no individual replacement. There will certainly have to be a cumulative replacement for a superstar player.

But, of course, if you won't sign one player who partially replaces the superstar because "they won't replace Bonds," then you'll never sign the 3 or 4 separate individuals who will do it together or the principle that no single one of them actually replaces the superstar.

You have to start somewhere. Edwin Encarnacion? I don't know... sure? But you have to start somewhere.

Re: An Eye Turner for our GM
This, of course, doesn't apply to this year as no combination of players that Sabean is capable of acquiring could have possibly made up the difference of Bonds and "missing pieces" to make the argument practically applicable in real life.

But hypothetically, with GMX in Free Agency year 20XX, this theory is sound.

GMX? Is he related to Racer X? In any case, he sounds like a substantial improvement over our current laughingstock.

Well, he is Speed GM's long lost brother, but I think the comparison ends there.

Re: An Eye Turner for our GM
I don't think the Reds are interested in letting Encarnacion go & although there rotation isn't strong, they have plenty of options for the back end of their rotation. So the dire need isn't really there, they have Bailey, Cueto, Volquez, Affeldt, & Belisle competing for spots & whilst i see them being interested in a Bedard or Lincecum type, i'm not sure they feel they need a Lowry type that badly

Having said that, who knows whether Sabean has even enquired about him, or what he's actually doing at the moment.
