Two-parter....

I forgot that I won't have access to a computer for today, so I'll have to throw up a quick comment starter:

  1. Name a random ex-Giant.
  2. What was your first concert?
Jim Gott and Living Colour (Time's Up tour) for me. Now you.

Speaking of ska
I'm listening through Reel Big Fish's new album ("Monkeys for Nothin' and the Chimps for Free"), and unfortunately so far it's pretty crap. Which sucks because "We're Not Happy 'Til You're Not Happy" was so damn good. At least "Our Live Album is Better than Your Live Album" will probably be pretty good when I get to it. RBF is always pretty good for a live show.

But I know a lot of people who don't even think of RBF as ska anymore. Might be true, but your ska drop was too convenient a connector for me to talk about this album.

Re: Whoa whoa whoa
Really. They are.

Most people don't like "Cheer Up" and I can generally see why. Too long, too much filler, kind of a big departure from earlier albums. The after that they were gone for a long time. And then they came out with "We're Not Happy 'Til You're Not Happy" a couple years ago and it was absolutely fantastic. And then they got out of their contract, released a live album, and just came out with this one not very long ago. I mean, it's not awful. It's perfectly listenable. It's just kind of lazy, kind of standard, and a big big letdown from the last one.

If you're an RBF fan at all, though, get WNHTYNH. It's really, really good. Plus, ska cover of Social Distortion. What's not to be interested about?

Re: Whoa whoa whoa
The first time I saw Reel Big Fish I didn't even know who they were, they were opening for Goldfinger. It was the first time I didn't want the opening act to leave. Their first CD was amazing, but each CD after that was a huge step down. I haven't bought the last couple.

Even more Speaking of ska
Mrs. Goofus and I saw The English Beat last month at The Little Fox in Redwood City.

The English Beat is now Dave Wakeling and new bandmates as the other guys live in England (where they perform as "The Beat") and it was one of the best shows I've EVER seen. They played 25 english Beat songs and two from his General Public days ("Tenderness" and "Burning Bright").

The Little Fox is a tiny venue (I'm guessing there were about 100-150 people) so intimate doesn't begin to describe the setting.  The band sounded great and Dave's voice still sounds f-ing great and the band was really tight.  We chatted with him during intermission and after the show and he seems like a great guy.  I ended up with an autographed playlist from the show, which I thought was awfully cool.

One little bit they do is probably the coolest bit I've ever seen at a live show.  Dave is involved with a non-profit group called "Smile Train" which fixes kids with facial deformities in poor countries.  During the performance of "Tenderness", he asks people to throw money at the band as a little mini-fundrasier for this charity.  The crowds totally get into it and the stage is rained with cash.  i read later that he's been doing this for a while now and he's raised a small fortune for these kids.

Re: Even more Speaking of ska
I saw them twice year before last, and I am going to see them again on Feb. 29 here in New York at Irving Plaza, which is now called The Fillmore. I don't really know how he can call his band The English Beat when he's the only original there, but like you said, the band is terrific. VH1 actually tried to get the original band back together a few years ago for their Bands Reunited show, but they were unable to do so because the two guitar players who later started Fine Young Cannibals were bitter and wanted no part of the reunion. Dave IS very nice and gracious with the fans, but on the VH1 show Ranking Roger painted the picture of Dave as a very greedy man who left the group because he wanted all the profits for himself.

Re: Even more Speaking of ska
I saw the Beat (as we called them back home) in 1979 - supporting the Vapors at a John Peel roadshow at Surrey University!  They were absolutely phenomenal then (this was just before their first single was released - and a few months before the Vapors released the wanking song).  I remember being stepped on by Paul Weller who was dancing as hard as the rest of us!

Ah, those were the days!

I used to be disgusted, but now I try to be amused!

Re: Even more Speaking of ska
How were the Vapors headlining for ANYBODY before they released their one hit?? Did you ever see The Specials?? I loved the English Beat and Madness, but the Specials were by far the best of the ska groups in my opinion.

Re: Even more Speaking of ska
The Vapors were from Guildford, where I grew up and where Surrey University is, and the show coincided with their first single, Prisoners, being released.  The Beat had been signed to a record deal, but hadn't released a single yet - it was likely one of their first gigs outside of Birmingham!  John Peel, a wonderful DJ who died fairly recently, used to set up one-off gigs with 2 or 3 new bands to give them some exposure - he used to introduce the bands and play a few record between the sets.

Never got to see the Specials - they played Guildford, but I was on a family holiday at the time, which was a bummer!

Re: Two-parter....
yeah, he has the minor league record for HRs: 276.  he was a september call-up in 1986, which was my 1st real season of being obsessed by the giants as a wee lad, and one of my most vivid memories of that season was Lancellotti the september call-up crushing one to center against the Reds, that Eric Davis caught by leaping and stretching his glove a foot above the chain-link fence. That's when I found out who Eric Davis was, but since then, Lancellotti's been my favorite "obscure giant".  It was his 2nd of 3 stints in the majors, and he hit 2 homers that year for the giants.

Yeah I remember him coming up. I really couldn't understand why they didn't give him more of a shot, considering how crappy they were in '86, but then '87 came along and I forgot about it.

Funny No Doubt story - I saw them for free in the quad at UCLA around... 1991?   When they were actually still a rockin' little SKA band.

I saw them again where the Islanders play (hockey arena on Long Island) - must have been 1995/96 when then were big.  We went because opening for them were the Vandals and the Toy Dolls.   We were gritting our teeth and expecting the 12 year olds.

We were not expecting the 8-year-olds with their parents.

Re: The Beatles
The Beatles performed their last concert before paying fans at Candlestick Park in San Francisco on 29 August 1966.[78][85] McCartney asked Tony Barrow to tape the event, but the 30-minute tape he used ran out halfway through the last song. The concert lasted a little under 35 minutes.[86] (from Wiki)

Two things always struck me as odd about that.  (1) what kind of concert is only 35 minutes; and (2) all of these albums came out after their last concert:

  1. Sgt. Pepper's (1967-06-01)
  2. The White Album (1968-11-22)
  3. Yellow Submarine (1969-01-17)
  4. Abbey Road (1969-09-26)
  5. Let It Be (1970-05-08)

Re: The Beatles
It was actually just their last concert in the US. They continued on to Australia and maybe some of Asia after SF. Then said we're done with that. I was only about 9, went with my oldest brother and cousin, sat up in the lower reserve behind 3rd base. There was lots and lots of screaming, the sound system sucked and it was over fast. On the bright side, I think the ticket was $5.50.

It was, in fact, Micky, Davy and Peter. And it was a pretty entertaining show, to be honest. I was about 11, I think, with a group of similarly aged children in the middle of a sea of screaming middle aged women. Good times.

If you haven't seen the Monkee's art-rock movie "head" put it on your netflix cue now.  By far the trippiest G-rated movie you will ever see.  plus you get cameos from Zappa, Jack Nicholson (who wrote and produced it), young terry garr, and Dennis Hopper.  No shit.

Anybody else catch The Who at Oakland Colesium in about '82 when the Clash opened for them on what was their first arena tour of the US. About 3 or 4 stultifying songs in the Who's set the crowd started calling for the Clash to come back and never did let up until the Who finally shut it down and sent everyone home.

My first concert, I think, was Information Society; paid, that is, else it was the band playing their concert every Sunday at Lake Merritt in Oakland during the early 70's (right after feeding the ducks).

I saw The Kinks once.  They're a lot of fun.

Re: Two-parter....
4-26-83 was the date of that Kinks show. One of my favorite all-time bands. First time I saw them they kicked every other band's ass at the Us Festival, except maybe Oingo Boingo's of all people.

Re: Two-parter....
Was that the same year that the Pretenders were at the Us Festival and Chrissy dedicated "Stop Your Sobbing" (written by Ray Davies) to Ray Davies only weeks after having left him for (ugh!) Jim Kerr.

Re: Two-parter....
No, I think the Pretenders were at the one in '83. '82 had the Talking Heads, B52s, Gang of Four, Ramones, etc., plus the Grateful Dead at like 8:30 in the morning.

Re: Two-parter....
Al Hargeshimer and the KEEN country music festival at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds in 1975. The show featured Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Freddie Fender, and Waylon Jennings among others. Of course, I was 6 at the time, so I don't know if it counts.

The first concert I ever paid to see was the Day on the Green 1985 with the Scorpions, Ratt, Metallica and Rising Force.

Attempted murder? Now honestly, what is that? Do they give a Nobel prize for attempted chemistry? Do they?

Pretenders/Alarm 1982 at the great Capital Theater in Passaic NJ. Still one of the best shows I've ever seen.

Re: Two-parter....
I can't tell whether this is actually such a compelling comment starter (the potential in these combinations is, without question, inspirational) or a true low point for the once-proud franchise we call the San Francisco Giants.  Perhaps this is a sign of hope, that we can rally together in mindless, albeit amusing fun in these darkest of days, instead of disbanding, pursuing other obsessive pastimes such as women or rare bossa nova LP collection, hoping that no one happens to utter the words "run" "offense" "corner" or "hit" which can be so psychicly abrasive, in our presence ever again.  We could pretend that baseball is a pitching-only sport- runs, who needs 'em when we have curveballs! Ha!, but no!  We choose to read and participate in this forum, deep in the off-season that hope forgot, eating the lotus of Oberkfells and Maldonados and Damon Minor with Lilith Fair...huddling together with only our good cheer to keep us from the blistering cold.  It is this comment starter, specifically, and the fact that I felt motivated to post for the first time in months- this tiny internal spark towards participation in the world of Giants; reminding me that other fans in other towns might actually be excited about an upcoming baseball season- that really struck home what a low point we're at.  Here's hoping this is Rock Bottom.  (I know it could get worse.  We could trade Matt Cain & Jonathan Sanchez for Joe Crede, as that astute White Sox fan pointed out.  No, foolish youth, our Master Sabean would never do that.  Joe Crede can't play center field.)

Craig Lefferts and Smokey Robinson.
(Appearing one night only, at the Warfield Theater.  Ladies, don't forget to wear those special panties, and toss 'em onstage one more time.  Make Smokey feel like it's '88 all over again!)
