Lets play another rousing game of "Kick The Tires"

Paging Mr. Sabian, please come back to the Tire Department, your vehicle is ready!!

Ok, we can dream right?

Lets just suppose in some strange world somebody got a bug up their ass and picked up the phone and made it perfectly clear that Licecain is completely out of the question... and lets just dream about maybe throwing a couple of names out... Oh I dunno, maybe a Sanchez/Lowery.. A Freddie Lewis.... and to fill in their need for a first basemen, we'll eat a little Richie for a year or two...

Bring in a 30 HR young first baseman and the following season after a BRILLIANT year lock the guy up till 2010....

ya.... I know, these "Newbies" on these blog boards, all they ever do is dream.....

....wish I had a tire.

Your thoughts?

Re:
Yeah, we're definitely not getting Morneau for anything less than Lincecum or Cain.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

Re: "Kick The Tires"
If the Twins decided to trade their firstbasemen there is no package the Giants could put togeather that would get him that did not include Cain or Lincecum.  But, I would have to think long and hard about a straight up (nothing else on either side) trade of either Cain or Lincecum.  This would be damm close to equal value.

Re: "Kick The Tires"
And you'd be wrong. Again. Morneau is 2(maybe 3) years from FA, and had an OPS of .834 last year. The average 1b had an OPS of .820. The idea that he's worth Cain or Lincecum, both of whom are better players (let alone the differential in service time) is ridiculous.

For kids out there, here is a lesson - as a 1b, its very very hard to be extraordinary valuable. Pujols, great as he is, is probably worth less as a player than A-Rod. Replacement level at 1b is very high - despite Brian Sabean trying to prove otherwise yearly.

Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.

Re: "Kick The Tires"
I get the service time argument, but the better player argument is not something I agree with. Cain and Lincecum have enormous potential for sure, but Morneau has already been an American League Most Valuable Player.

Re: "Kick The Tires"
His batting average in the MVP year was 50 points higher than any other year for him (including last year).

Don't get me wrong, he's a great player and I'd love to have him, but at 1B he's nothing more than above average.  If he can elevate his stats to keep in line with his 2006 year he'll be more, but we didn't see that last year.

Re: Lets play...
Morneau is >> then Rois.  A straight up swap would have to be seriously considered. Not sure which way I would go  but it would take some serious reckoning.  Cot's as Morneau down as 6.25 mil for `08, 10.5 mil for `09 & 12.5 mill for `10.

Re: Lets play...
Scratch the contract info.  I copied Muer's by accident. Sorry about that.

Re: Lets play...
If we still had Liriano and Nathan we could probably send them over there for Morneau.

Re: Lets play...
That was last year though. Why do you think last year is the player that he is and not the year before??
