How is Bonds w/ younger players?

very receptive to helping them out or does he do his own thing?

this would be an interesting situation if it did happen, but likely a sell out by A's ownership trying to get more $$ and fans

there are rumblings of a kotsay salary dump to braves, so maybe they use some of the savings towards the bonds budget.

here's an interesting question could the "rebuilding" A's offer more lineup protection w/ Cust/Chavez/Barton/Buck/Suzuki etc in 08 than bonds got in 07 w/ feliz/molina/durham etc?

that said, unless bodns is willing to take a paycut and with all his baggage, it seems like a long shot still

Slusser On Barry Bonds Possibilities

We recently named Susan Slusser Rumor Royalty for the A's.  She is the team's beat writer for the San Francisco Chronicle.  As part of the feature she answered a few questions for us.

MLBTR: Could you see any team beside the A's signing Barry Bonds?  In your estimation, what's the most the A's would pay for a year of Bonds

Slusser: An insider told me at the winter meetings that two other teams besides the A's had asked about Bonds, so it's impossible to rule out. If he plays - and that seems to be a pretty big if -- Oakland has the best shot, but estimating a salary is really tough. If there's no other interest and Bonds really wants to play, considering all the issues that surround him, the price tag could be pretty cheap, say $5-$6 million. If there's more interest, it could go up. The A's did pay Mike Piazza $8 million last year.

Do the A's really want Bonds, though? There are good reasons to sign him, and equally solid reasons not to. They need to put fans in the seats after moving their most popular player, and they don't have much in the middle of the order right now. On the other hand, they might alienate much of their fan base with Bonds, and a team that is in "full bore'' rebuilding mode might not be looking to spend on a 43-year-old free agent with lots of legal problems and an iffy clubhouse reputation. There is no doubt it has been discussed internally, however.

I don't really see that as a very hard question to answer at all. An overwhelming YES. Cust is a legitimate HR hitter. Suzuki has power as well. Chavez is kind of like Pedro, and Barton and Buck are up-and-comers that could impress. At any rate, they're all A's, which translates to OBP, which translates to better protection as well.

Okay , okay.
Without the viable attraction of being on the cusp of major recordbreaking - coupled with the reality of media and fan negativity - our boy's got to dance like crazy marketing himself as reformed and cooperative...I'm betting that's part of the marketing strategy , how he can impart his vast wisdom and experience to the younger set.

You should be his lawyer.  That's probably exactly how he needs to sell himself going into his trial.

Re: How is Bonds w/ younger players?
What I had heard about Bonds was that when he was young he wouldn't share a thing about hitting with anyone else. His fear was that if he did help out a young player and then that player went to another team, that knowledge would be used against him. Apparently towards the end of his career he did share some of his knowledge with younger players, but how much is a big question mark.

I don't see the A's signing him since they are re-building. That is, unless they can sign him really cheap.

Players like Todd Linden, Kevin Frandsen and Freddie Lewis were quoted as saying that Barry gave them some hitting tips, IIRC.

Re: How is Bonds w/ younger players?
By all accounts, Bonds can be great with young players -- or even older ones -- when he wants to be. That last clause is the rub. He's totally unreliable in this regard. It's all about what mood he's in -- not exactly the work ethic you look for in a mentor or a coach.

Re: How is Bonds w/ younger players?
This past season, Frandsen fell into an awful slump in late summer, batting .203/.246/.390 for the month of August.  He said that Bonds helped him in late August, working on him with his approach at the plate.  The result was Frandsen hitting .370/.427/.479 in September.

Bonds earned a bad reputation earlier in his career, but most reports from the last 3-4 years indicate he has been a real good influence on the younger guys.
