Pray for Smoak

It's never too early to campaign early for 2008. So my top candidate: Justin Smoak!!! Write letters or emails to your senators, congressmen, whomever to vote for Smoak in 2008. Let them know that where there's Smoak, there's usually a single, double, homerun, or sometimes a triple. How about that for the cover of the 2010 team guide?

Re: Pray for Smoak
I've been on the Smoak bandwagon since day 1.  However, I don't think he'll fall to us, will he?  I get the feeling the only player who's better is Pedro Alvarez.  But I'm not sure.

Re: Pray for Smoak
Alvarez is being touted as a once in a decade player ala Griffey, Arod, Wendell Fairley. Okay, the last one is just a tad bit of a stretch. So Alvarez will go to TB. No fair, they already have Longoria. But if we lose our last three and the Reds, Astros, Pirates, White Sox, Marlins and Pirates win their last series, then we can surely get Smoak.

If that happens, we will know why the good Lord allowed Brian Wilson to get that clutch blown save. For us to get Smoaked! Imagine the possibilities of such a name. Endless.

Re: Pray for Smoak
I don't think Flannery wants us to get him.  Sending Smoak signals would seem like quite an ordeal and not worth the effort.

Another reason . . .
to bust out with Deep Purple at the ballpark again.  "Smoak on the Water."  Oh, God.

Re: Pray for Smoak
I understand looking at a players entire work rather than just one season's worth but isn't there a chance other players can move up in the draft and some of the top players can have a down season?

Re: Pray for Smoak
There's also a chance guys like Alvarez and Smoak ask for a bafillion dollars and drop down the draft. That's how the D-Backs got Stephen Drew and Justin Upton. Maybe the Giants will get lucky, too.

Ah, who am I kidding? They'll pick a pitcher.

I don't have you on the Frank Nation roster , how long have you been a member?
Oh , and I'm the financial secretary. That's why I'm wearing this Financial Secretary hat. So mail all dues payments directly to me. And you're thirteen months behind...hurry every chance you get.

When I saw this diary I thought the guy was in a car accident or something. Maybe a different title would have been better, or maybe I'm just dumb.

My bad. My first ever diary. Maybe this would have been clearer.

Please supplicate and petition a higher, benevolent being for the acquisition of highly desired player, Justin Smoak, also that he would not get into an accident.

Yonder Alonso!
Smoak and Alonso are both stuck at 1B so no advantage there for Smoak.  IMO, Alonso is just a better hitter all alround with close to the same power.

Re: Pray for Smoak
Well, the draft has two big college hitters....and...

Well, we're not sure yet.

BA's summer MVP, Luke Greinke, was both a top hitter and pitcher in the Valley League, but his future is clouded.  He has a low-90's fastball and plus slider, which doesn't make for a Top-3 pick pitcher.  He's supposedly a better pitcher than hitter, too.

Aaron Crow, a junior out of Missouri, was noted in BA by one scouting director as the #1 overall pick.  But he's not a fireballer, which usually is a Top-3 signifier.  Will he be enough to push one, if not both, Alvarez and Smoak down?

Yonder Alonso, a Junior from Miami, should also force himself into the discussion with his prodigious power, but will the power and his overall hitting prowess push back an all-around prospect like Smoak at the same position?  I'm not sure I'd agree with DrB in thinking that Smoak and Alonso are at the same level, or that Smoak may be lesser.  If Alonso is the better all-around hitter, Smoak is the better all-around player.  Outfielder Dennis Raben, Alonso's teammate, also is a big power hitter, but less polished.

One of the top college pitchers is Christian Friedrich, who sounds a lot more like Zito than anyone.  He may be the closest to being pro ready, which'll help, but he's the safe pick (Hi, Pittsburgh).

This is all before the high school players emerge, which should tantalize teams with room for youth like Kansas City and Florida.

There are some other draft questions to consider.  Will the likely top picking team, Tampa Bay, go for another third baseman in Alvarez after drafting Evan Longoria tops not long ago?  Will Pittsburgh, without Littlefield, finally stop drafting safe?  They are real wild cards.  The Orioles took the top college hitter last year, will they go pitcher?  And will the Royals go cheap again, or splurge again?

I honestly believe that if the Giants get to #5 overall, they have a good shot at a college hitter, with three probably worth getting (Alvarez, Smoak, and Alonso).

Re: Pray for Smoak
I enjoyed your post, Brute.  Thanks for the info.

From everything I've heard, the Pirates are putting an emphasis on player development now.  I assume that means Huntington would like to make a splash by drafting a high-profile player.  And should the Rays and others choose to pass on Alvarez, I don't see the Pirates passing him either.  Neil Walker might be a good prospect, but it appears that Alvarez is a rare talent.
