Open Game Thread, 9/25

No Bonds. If he doesn't play tomorrow, I'll write an angry letter to the editor.

There is Dave Roberts, though. That's pretty much the same thing as watching Bonds.

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/25
That's got to be the perfect ending to Cain's nightmare season. Pitch your butt off, reach 200 innings, leave with a lead after you finally get a little run support, and have the bullpen blow it.

Funny thing is, you could predict this ending after the second inning. Padres creep back in the game as Giants stop scoring, then hit go-ahead homer in the 9th to blow the win for Cain. Must have happened 10 times this year already

Bochy is the one they should thank.

Never should've asked Wilson to save a game over two innings.  Should've gone with someone else to finish the eighth, then gone with Wilson in the 9th.

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/25
There was already one out. He could've left Kline in. He could've gone to Munter if he wanted a right-hander vs. Hairston. I'd have opted for either of those over bringing in Wilson in the eighth.  I said so then and I say so now.  The two-inning save is a much riskier proposition, especially with a young pitcher like Wilson.  A closer like Wilson comes in and blazes through one inning. They aren't accustomed to throwing 30+ pitches and saving something in reserve for a second inning of work.

Riddle me this...

You've got a matchstick hitter at the plate who hasn't hit a HR in two years, you've got an 0-2 count, you're throwing 99 MPH with movement.

Why the phuck do you nibble three straight times and walk the phucker?

Just gas it down the pipe and end the phucking game.

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/25
Exactly my point: he does have electric stuff. So stop phuckin' around and let him pound his 99 MPH stuff in the zone with two strikes to a two-bit hitter like Robles with the game on the line.

It wasn't Wilson who was calling for four straight outside nibbles. It was Molina who set up his fat ass outside.

That kind of strategy is understandable with someone like Hennessey who can't afford to float one down the pipe. But Wilson was throwing 99 with movement. No chance in hell Robles even nicks it. But he never had to take his bat off his shoulders thanks to genius-level location calls from Molina.

By the way, 90% of major league first baseman make that play in the 9th. Can of corn. Only a lard-assed AAAA guy who, for some reason, was brought in for defensive purposes in the 9th can't make that play.

Of course, Aurilia and Klesko are lard-asses too. So they are both probably among the 10% who can't make that play either.

Note to management: get a real phuckin' first baseman. It's been three years now. Stop with the garbage: Niekro, Sweeney, Aurilia, Krisco, McClain, Fatty McNuggetpants.

you're right. McClain is a DH who turned the wrong way on the bloop. Any experienced first baseman would have gotten back to that spot easily. Bochy was so keyed up to show the Padres they goofed in letting him go that he wound up proving the opposite.

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/25
McClain is a third baseman (and a crappy one at that.) No doubt his first instinct is to turn towards his right since that's what you do at 3B.

So he turned the wrong way and the ball fell a couple feet to his left.

I don't blame him, since he sucks and can't help it.

But the question remains: what the phuck was he doing at 1B in the 9th inning in the first place? A gift-wrapped win for the Padres. Thanks, Big Head!

This is the saddest, most gut-wrenching end to a miserable season of gut-wrenching endings.  It boggles my mind that this team could not kick ass just once for Cain.

We were at Friday night's game, and we couldn't believe how the bullpen sucked the joy out of such a feel-good first half (Willie Mac award, Omar 3-run bomb). I thought that was the last horrific meltdown of '07.  Shows what I know.

Re: Open Game Thread, 9/25
Due to the repeated beating-over-my-head that is the '07 season, I'll just chalk this one up to a lesson learned:  Brian Wilson should not pitch more than 1 inning.  I personally was glad he was brought in and I thought he could pull it off the way he was dealing.  Obviously in hindsight it was a bad choice, like drinking milk on a hot day for example.

The bigger blunder imo was bringing in McClain.  Is Ortmeier hurt?  Is he really our 4th 1Bman?  McClain has more experience maybe but he looked pretty ridiculous going back for that bloop.  Ort being a former OF would have gotten there.  If Bochy isn't going to trust Ort's defense late in the game why the hell are we converting him to 1B?

Conclusion: Fire Bochy
