Is Randy Winn in contention?

For a gold glove?

He has a paltry 2 errors in almost 1250 outfield innings.  Of course it is split up among the three positions, but he plays most of his games in RF.  A home RF that can be a pain in the arse for anyone that wanders near it. So does he have a chance?  Does he need more spectacular catches?

What are the best qualifiers for outfield gold glove?

Re: Is Randy Winn in contention?
Unfortunately, the Gold Glove award is not always an accurately given award.  If you've won it once, chances are it'll be handed to you again and again, no matter how bad you've gotten.

Let me put it this way: Derek Jeter is the LAST player to deserve a Gold Glove, yet he still wins it.  It usually goes to a player on a team that's a contender, or they have to be outstanding at their position.

Randy Winn ranked as a +22 last year, 2 above Alex Rios (by John Dewan's metrics).  He's definitely one of the best defensive OF in the game, but he'll most likely be overshadowed by someone else, even if they are less deserving.

Players like Adrian Beltre, Pedro Feliz and Adam Everett deserve recognition not only by stat-heads but by everyone out there.

Brian Anderson: converting saves and dominating as best he can.

I was just thinking about this today while Mychael Urban was rambling about Feliz's D. While Randy has been good, I doubt he'll get any attention.

Re: Is Randy Winn in contention?
Randy is a good left fielder, a pretty good right fielder (lacking primarily the arm) and a so-so center fielder.  I certainly don't think he is deserving of a Gold Glove.

If you want to look at one play that indicates why I feel that way, just look at Tim Lincecum's last start.  Remember the ball Randy misjudged in left center that fell in for a triple?  That play certainly isn't characteristic of Randy's defense, but it does indicate why he doesn't deserve a Gold Glove despite the low number of errors.

I think Pedro Feliz deserves a Gold Glove, but I doubt he'll win one.  Omar Vizquel might well win another one this year, but he probably isn't the most deserving shortstop.  In his case, Omar isn't all that far off, though.  I think Randy IS a fair way from deserving one.

Re: Is Randy Winn in contention?
Would it be safe to make the assumption that this is an award for flashy play?  Because if that's the case, as much as I like Randy, he's the opposite of flashy.

I can't remember the last time I saw him lay out fully for a ball ala Edmonds, etc.  He has a decent arm, maybe a bit above average, or even good maybe, but he's not in the same class as Vlad, Ichiro, etc.

Randy strikes me as the consummate pro.  One that doesn't take things to the media, doesn't complain about where or how much he's playing, and he is the model of consistency in everything he does...hitting the ball the other way...etc.  All of this, while extremely valuable to some people, isn't the kind of stuff that wins awards.

I adopted Omar and have nothing good to say about this team. Footy season has kicked off, so I don't watch the Giants much anymore.

You're completely right.
The Gold Glove is more or less for flashy play, not a player's ability to field well.

Jim Edmonds really isn't that great of a defensive player any more, but he makes himself appear to be by making all those diving plays . . .which he has to make because he takes poor routes to the ball.

Derek Jeter is a perfect example.  Please show me a video clip where he's not throwing on the run and making a simple grounder look like an adventure.

Re: Is Randy Winn in contention?
Randy IS a consumate pro.  And as a center fielder, he's adequate.

Re: Is Randy Winn in contention?
The reason Winn has so few errors is not because he's a good fielder, it's because he has no arm and takes few risks in the field. You won't get many throwing errors if you never try to do more than hitting the cutoff man. You won't get many fielding errors if you rarely dive for a ball.

Re: Is Randy Winn in contention?
I don't think a statistician would give an error to an outfielder who dives for a ball. Errors are typically reserved for a player who botches a "routine" out.

You won't get any fielding errors..
If you dive for every ball even.  I haven't seen a player awarded an error when he dives for the ball.  A dive already means the ball is barely playable for him.

Re: You won't get any fielding errors..
Scorer rarely give an error to an outfielder on anything that isn't throw-related. Even botching a can of corn is usually blamed on the sun and scored as a hit.

Re: You won't get any fielding errors..
Many errors that don't involve throws are given to outfielders.  On fly balls, it has to do with the ball hitting the glove and the play not being quite difficult.  On grounders, most boots that allow an extra base are penalized.

The Giants ratio of 53 fielding errors to 32 throwing errors (among all players -- not merely outfielders) is fourth-highest in the league.

Well, gold gloves in the OF
are not awarded according to position.

So, Winn will be competing with the CFs, the likes of Andruw Jones, Carlos Beltran, Aaron Rowand, Mike Cameron.

Re: Is Randy Winn in contention?
who really cares if Randy Winn wins a Gold Glove?? No Giant deserves any awards for this miserable failure of a season. Randy, just submit those list of 10 teams you'd be willing to go to as soon as possible to Brian Sabean so we can put a kid out there in that spot that you're wasting.

IMO Pedro Feliz deserves a Gold Glove in his last season with the Giants.

So you're penciling him in to win it during the 2015 season?  Impressive.

Re: Is Randy Winn in contention?
Considering only the Right Fielders out there, don't we all think that Colorado's Brad Hawpe is a much better all-around defensive player than Winn?

Re: Is Randy Winn in contention?
Randy Winn is an above average fielder and is really a decent 3rd outfielder for most teams.  I'd rather keep him than dave roberts.  Still, randy winn does not deserve a gold glove.

in other news, Marcel Marceau est mort.  :(

Pedro Feliz: Marginally better this year.
