I am sad
But I am elated. I am more elated than sad. This is a good day for the organization, and hopefully, for Barry Bonds as well. I wish you look as a DH Barry. It will be good to see you on a hopefully contending team (other than the Angels, WhiteSox, or Yankees, imho).

This isn't over, methinks
Just more of the gamesmanship between Bonds and Magowan that started last off-season. I won't believe his Giants career is over until I see him wearing another team's uniform.

Re: This isn't over, methinks
I'm with you, for the most part. Though I'm sure a little bit of that must be a large dose of denial.

Assuming this is true for good, It will probably be the hardest thing I've ever done as a fan watching Bonds play for another team and rooting for the Giants team that he should be playing on. From an objective point of view, I just don't see how it could possibly be the right move for the franchise in 2008. As a fan, I would be devastated. Assuming it is true, I have to call bullshit on Magowan & Co., because it would be the fattest load of the stuff they've ever dropped at my front door.

Bah. Humbug.

I guess I'm too cynical, but my immediate reaction was that this was just a move to fill the seats on this last homestand. (I mean, did you see the stands during last nights game? purty empty)

I live in Orange County, so it wouldn't be so bad.  Not nearly as bad as the Yankees or the A's, both of which are abhorrent.

With the Angels he would have the best manager in the game and Vlad and I wouldn't put it past them to grab Arod, too.  I'd like to see him win a ring.

Re: Wow . . .
This is not about business unless you want to call a manifestation of an over-inflated ego, business. This about Magowan's ego, and his desire to get away  from the heat in the kitchen. He is going to be finding out in the next couple of years, that the fairy tale he was living as a "Baseball Owner" was really the result of the efforts of people on his payroll, and not himself. He surrounds himself with sycophants, yes men, and kisses the asses of the media, politicos and business swells who kiss his ass in return. He is fast approaching the winter  of his ownership life as Stoneham and Lurie did before him. The combination of a bad f/a market, empty farm system and a last place team with expensive, unloadable contracts all but assures a complete and enthusiastic return to apathy by Bay Area Giants fans. He definitely wins the dickhead of the week award.

Let ME say it then...
Disregard my earlier posts on this thread , I was in a different frame of mind.
Then I tuned into "Baseball Tonight" , pretty much for authentication - I'd only heard this topic on McC , and you know what rumormongers those jokers are.
And as I saw/heard Magowan's little "declaration of separation"...what did he say , something about the season unraveling made them decide to move in a different direction...you could almost see him struggling not to pin it all on Barry but failing somehow...and I thought about the timing of this little drama , and the span of achievements the Giants have had as a result of Barry directly...and this just stinks.

They owe him a year...and they give him a week.

So Fuck Magowan , Fuck Sabean , and the Giants...well , they're fucked - but that's old news.

That IS all.

Re: Bye Giants
I will always be a Giant fan no matter what, but Peter Magowan is full of shit. Don't sit there and tell us we can turn it around and be a winner next year because other teams have done it, and then tell us you're not bringing back Barry Bonds. If you're planning on contending, Bonds is the FIRST player you bring back. You have two ways you can go, Peter. You can say this is a total rebuild and a 44 year old outfielder doesn't fit in, and I would respect that. Or you can make another run at it with Barry in the lineup. You can't get rid of your best player and go from last to first, that's just ridiculous. Any fan that buys that is a moron, and I doubt any will. Magowan is insulting our intelligence. I bet Sabean was cringing when Magowan was flapping his gums.

It is time to move on. Hope this is true and Magowan & Co. keep their word this time. With that said, SF was fortunate to have the major portion of Bonds' HOF career played in The City. Bonds brought he many talents and displayed them endlessly to an adoring fan base. Thank you.

MAYBE the knowledgeable come to see Lincecum - but past him , who's the attraction? And if they're not contending...say hello to Baltimore West.
Watching Barry's decline in skills is something akin to watching Ali's...and that was bad. From a business standpoint it makes sense and doesn't at the same time. He 's still a draw , still produces as well as any of our other regulars (or is that as badly?) But yeah , 15 mil is a chunk or three. If they can't sign at least ONE good position bat (And why not two? Never mind availability , I don't deal in reality...) for that kind of money then they can go fu...then that's just sad. Bonds
Cross posting this from another forum I visit.

It's kind of sad for me, at least, to see Barry go and not end his career as a Giant. I guess it parallels with what Mays did when he played his last season for the Mets. I'll always be a fan of Bonds because he was one of my guys. I think the city of SF owes him a lot, he was one of the reasons that the Giants could stay in SF and not go to some awful place like Tampa Bay (no offense D-Rays fans!)

So long Barry, thanks for everything.

He wants to pay proper tribute to the fans at the games at home, like he's always tried to do. He only has one of those left now, and it's not enough time to make it a proper farewell. Not for the team, not for him, and not for the fans who would have scrambled to get tickets if it had been announced sooner.

You've got a Giants ballclub that won't be contending for a few years and you just let your best hitter and gate draw walk away after 15 seasons?  And 15 seasons of unmatched production?

How much would it have hurt the franchise to pony up for one more year? As much money as he's made for himself, he's also paid off in attendance boosts (around the league) and production on the field.

And you let him walk in his farewell year?  This fucking sucks.

Re: they will not be bringing me back for the
I wouldn't be so quick to assume he won't retire as a Giant, particularly if the separation proceeds respectfully on both sides. Next year or the year after, his skills/health will decline to the point where he's ready to quit and he'll be released, whereupon the Giants will bring him back in September for a farewell game or two, assuming they aren't in the thick of a pennant race with no roster spots to spare. That's probably a safe assumption for the next couple of years.
I think this will prove to be the right move for the team even if it looks bad at first. It needs to learn to win without him and I wouldn't be astonished to see the players -- even those who admire/like him -- responding positively to the challenge.
This will also be the right move for Barry, assuming someone signs him as a DH. That's the job he's really suited for these days. I hate that it exists -- stupidest rule ever -- but since it does Barry should pad his figures with it just like Aaron and the other aging stars of the past 20 years (not to mention the one-dimensional hulks like Ortiz and Hafner). I honestly don't care which AL team gets him as long as I don't have see him go through the last stages of decline in a Giants uniform.

Am I a bad fan?
This news doesn't really hit me that hard.  To me it's only a minor thing that he will be playing in another uniform next year.  I am a Barry fan.  I will be sad to see him in another uniform, but not that sad.  Maybe it's because I know the Giants will stink no matter what.  Maybe it's because I know Barry will only play 3/4 of the games, max.  Maybe it's because I don't let sports make me too bummed (I mean, seriously, it's sports).  Maybe that makes me a bad fan.  I really don't know.  All I know is that I wish Barry well.  He's been the best player I've ever watched.  By far.  Unless it's the Babe, he's the best player ever.  I am proud that he was a Giant.  It was awesome watching him do what he does.  I was truly privileged to watch him play here.

But I have already moved on.  I have turned the page.  I am looking forward to the future of the Giants.  And that future does not include Barry on the field.  And so it doesn't hit me that hard to find out he won't be here next year.

And, you know, for all of McGowen's faults, I still am thankful to him.  It was Mr. McGowen and company that kept the Giants in the bay area.  Not Barry.  He was also the guy who brought Barry home in the first place.  And he built the best ballpark in major league baseball.

Re: Am I a bad fan?
You're not a bad fan for not being hit hard by it.  I accepted it as almost inevitable after we re-signed him this season (after trying to sign Soriano, Lee, trading for Ramirez, etc.), and I guess I just got a strong feeling he wouldn't be back.  So I'm not as depressed as the majority of others here and not as understanding.  I started the grieving process at the beginning of the year and just let it die off during the season.

The way I see it, I want him to win a WS ring because he deserves it.  And if he can't do it here, then I wish him the best of luck winning it elsewhere.

You're right in saying Magowan has done great things for the Giants- but this was long ago.  I guess we should be and are thankful for that, but it's hard to remember when the present and immediate future are so damn bleak.  I have lost respect for him, however, with the way he handled this situation.  This should have been addressed at an earlier time.  The fact that Barry JUST found out is ludicrous, IMO.

Re: Am I a bad fan?
NO. Magowan did not save the Giants from Tampa Bay. That was done by Bud Selig before anybody even heard of Peter Magowan. Selig vetoed the sale to Tampa Bay interests. Magowan assembled an ownership group with himself as the (ahem, Al Davis) Managing General Partner. The Giants are owned by lots of people and the largest shareholder is Sue Burns. Bob Lurie still owns a piece of the club, or at least he did the last time I looked. He and Baer's claim to fame is sucking off the special interest political hacks in San Francisco with the help of Willie Brown to get a stadium built downtown.

That Magowan "saved the Giants" is an urban legend that he does absolutely nothing to dissuade. Exactly what you expect from a trust-fund baby with very few un-aided accomplishments of his own.

Yes, it was built for Barry.  Not by Barry.

Whenever someone talks about all the stuff Barry did for San Francisco and the Giants it kind of makes me roll my eyes.

It's not like he did all that stuff out of the goodness of his heart.  He got an awful lot out of his baseball career.

<shrugs>

I don't think Giants ownership owes him anything else.  They paid him a lot of money.  They built a ballpark for him.  They honored him again and again.

Evicted on short notice you say?  They could have made this anouncement in December, says I.

Re: Am I a bad fan?
Nobody is crying foul because they were "called" on something.  If I am crying foul it's because you did the virtual equivalent of smacking me in the back of the head when I was just sitting there doing nothing to you.

Apparently it's very important to you how Peter McGowen is viewed by others.  I understand that now.  You needn't have resorted to insults to get that across.  All you had to say was "I really, really want you to hate Peter McGowen so stop your not-hating and start hating."  That would have been more civil.

Maybe it was a tad rude of me to ignore your comment and respond to the other comment.  I'm sorry, but I would have thought that one of the most consistent posters here would have a thicker skin than that.

I must admit, I didn't respond to you because I prefer not to get involved with people who are as negative and cynical as you.  It's only a personal preference.  Usually, internet posters are able to take things like that in stride (that would be without going out of their way to insult).

It's interesting that you talk about unsubstantiated opinions because you gave no evidence for your assertions.  In fact, had I responded to you I would have asked for sources to back up your claims.  If you are correct, whcih I am quite willing to believe you are, then I will modify my opinion based upon those facts.  But forgive me if I don't just take your assertions as fact.

So, what I don't like isn't "being called out," it's being insulted with no provacation.  I hope that clears things up.  Hopefully you don't mind being called out on your uninformed opinions either.

I'm surprised at the reaction here.

First you can't let sentiment play such a big role in personnel moves, the only real goal is winning games.  If your goal is to be competitive by 2009, both the $15 million and the at bats can be used more productively elsewhere.

Second I think everyone is underestimating the disruption Bonds causes the team.  His own set of rules, his looming presence, the media in the locker room every single day asking the same stupid questions.  I've never heard anything but how much the other players hate the whole circus.

Its a sad day, but let Barry go play some meaningful games and let the Giants work towards being good again.

Re: "...they will not be bringing
1) I doubt the Giants could find a better use of $15M on this FA Market, it is truly craptastic. Don't say Arod, there's no way he'd repeat the mistake he made with the Rangers. He wants a raise, but he wants to win just as badly.

1A) Getting rid of Bonds, aka: the only remotely legit 3/4/5 hitter on the roster at any level, will make the Giants an even less attractive destination to FA's, forcing the team to pay a percentage on top of competing offers to attract players (call it the 100-loss premium).

  1. I doubt the Giants could find a better use for Bonds' 400 ABs. Schierholtz is a right fielder, Davis and Lewis are platoonish 4th outfielders. Bonds' AB's will probably end up going to Winn or Roberts, both of whom should be traded (something I think is less likely to occur with Bonds out of the picture).
  2. Bonds is a draw. He may not sell as many tickets as he used to, but, just as important to the team, he will help get people with tickets to actually show up to the games. I don't know if he'd literally earn back the 15M in drawing power, but he'd be a better bet to do so than anyone else the Giants could sign with that cash.
Fool me seven times, shame on you. Fool me eight or more times, shame on me.

Re: "...they will not be bringing
Thanks for adding the reality check. These words will ring true for the Bonds naysayers about the middle to end of next season.

So who would YOU spend
the $15 million on?

Carlos F**** Lee? His defense is worse than Bonds' and his offense does not make up for it. Taking into account defense Lee is an average player. Being paid $100 million.

Alfonso Soriano? Better than Lee, in a good year, but not this year, arguably as good as Bonds or better. $136 million.

Re: So who would YOU spend
Its $15 million they're not giving Bonds.  Its not like it disappears if they don't spend it on someone else.  It'll be mitigated by lower revenue but surely its still way cash positive.

They'll be worse without him, but last place is last place.  The last thing a rebuilding team needs is an aged, cranky, expensive superstar.  Hopefully Zito doesn't get cranky.

So it's a good thing
if the owners just pocket the $15 million?

Re: "...they will not be bringing
First you can't let sentiment play such a big role in personnel moves, the only real goal is winning games.

Thats the point!  It has more to do with that than anything else. That he is one of the top hitters in MLB is what makes this whole shitcanning episode so disagreeable.

The sentiment is coming from Magowan. It reeks of his inferiority complex. Thats the sentiment. Not Bonds. I don't know if you saw the Magowan Press Conference, but his body language was classic guilt and avoidance with his constant looking down and away and his rambling defensive mumbling about how respectful Bonds was. Pathetic performance by a little man with too much money and too much power. A pipsqueak is what he would have been referred to back in the day.  A guy like him would have been run out of town in the 30s.

Hard to say, I don't seem to have the vicious hatred for Magowan you do.

Re: "...they will not be bringing
I wouldn't call it hate. I wish him no ill will whatsoever. What I wish for him is to put aside his ego, and realize two things.

He doesn't know as much as he thinks he knows about the game. Which is about as much as Bud Selig. Trivia mastery does not a baseball person make.

You can fool some of the fanbase all of the time and all of the fanbase some of the time, but he's not going to be able to fool all of the fanbase all of the time. Something that Mr. Lurie found out the hard way. Lurie and Herseth came in, heralded as heroes in 1976. By 1991, Lurie was heavily criticized. By 1992, he was villified. By 1993, he was disgraced and gone.

And like Lurie, Magowan has gone from an omnipresent media presence, to an occasional press conference. I give it until June of the 2009 season before mass media and fans start calling for his head on a stake. If that long.

If Bonds ends up in Oakland  hitting bombs while the A's make a pennant run, and the Giants are still farting around under .500 with the illustrious Zito being promoted as the face of the franchise, I will not be alone in my antipathy for the Magowan era.

Bummer
This thread has brought out probably the most poster vs. poster ugliness I've ever seen at McC.  Quite disappointing as this place is usually respectful disagreement without getting all kum bay yah. Multiple times here, people have been told to f-off simply because they don't agree with a poster's opinion regarding Bonds.

We're all Giants fans here (exepct for one who just became a former Giants fan). For those choose to vent your anger by attacking a fellow McCoven, I sure wouldn't want to be in a foxhole with you.

And oh yeah, f the Dodgers.

Attention all cars: Be on the look-out for Ryan Klesko's missing power.

Don't know if it's just that my +1 from above should be here instead but I agree completely with you Goofus.

Re: Bummer
I like Goofus because he always tries to be positive and even if he is really upset he does his best to hide it in order to keep the atmosphere good.

In this case I think Goofus should vent the fuck out of the place in such a way that everyone who is reading his words blinks a few times then slowly shuts down their computer and wanders away and then calls their mom to say "I love you."  Afterwards they go for a run while stopping to smell the flowers.

Eventually they come home and fire up the ole PC and come back to this site and then check to make sure what they thought they had read was real.  True to their eyes the post is excactly the same but now there is a newer more soul crushing post that is so full of emotion that the Alan Ginsberg rises from his grave and after consultation changes the name of his poem to "meh" and encourages Goofus to call his ode to Magown "Howl."

Goofus then becomes a multi-zillionaire and buys the team.  He then goes on to have a pres conference where he calls out Magowan to a one on one in front of a national audience for the WWE championship.  A stone cold stunner and a rock bottom later, Magowan is in a figure four leg lock, writhing in pain.  The honorary referee, Bonds, then deuces in Pete's mouth, declares San Francisco the winner and signs a lifetime contract with the Giants to play till he can't any more and then be a hitting consultant.

Goofus then signs Arod, Andru Jones, and Dreamy (forcing Sabean to do the work) and fires Bochy.  In a moment of kindness he gives Sabean the benefit of the doubt and allows him one more year to fill the holes in the line-up.

Goofus then sits back and consults with Grant and comes to the decision that none of this would have happened had it not been for the asshatery of giantsrainman and wilriv.  He makes a post thanking them for being such gigantic fuckclown douches that they are no longer able to hold up the charade and stop posting.  Mysteriously DodgerTop and DodgerBottom begin posting much more often at some shitty dodger blog.

Bah! I can't even begin to say how depressing this is. Stupid, stupid move. Next year is going to make this one seem like a great one. 100 losses and no end in sight.
