Catchers for 2008

As the season winds down to a disappointing end, obviously thoughts turn to next year. In a way this is a good time of the year as hopes for next year are high, with all the different possibilities, before the practicalities of next seasons roster end up being a let down.

These points have already been discussed in other posts, but i thought it'd be interesting to see what the consensus is, by conducting a poll or two a day to determine next seasons roster & to get peoples thoughts.

Re: Catchers for 2008
Bengie Molina has had a nice 2007 season and will likely be the starting catcher in 2008. Let Guillermo Rodriguez, Eliezer Alfonzo and Justin Knoedler battle for the back-up catcher.

Re: Catchers for 2008
Doesn't matter -- it's all just keeping a seat warm for the inevitable 2008 explosion of young Pablito.
My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.

Re: Catchers for 2008
Bengie is one of the few things I actually like about this year's team. I wouldn't mind keeping him through the duration of his contract, as long as he stays about the same. Or better. Please, better. Just not worse.
Strikeouts are boring. Besides that, they're fascist. Not boring: Emmanuel Burriss. Not facist: THE RETURN OF SF Dugout

Catchers generally don't get better in their thirties.

Re: Catchers for 2008
Molina's defense is little lazy, but he's the only veteran Giant outside of BLB I enjoy watching hit.

I'd like to see the Giants give JK a serious look in Spring.  I still don't really understand why Fonzie and G-Rod leap-frogged over him to the Show.  Both are below-average defenders and total hacks on offense.  They've both gotten big hits, but they really are AAAA catchers.

Re: Catchers for 2008
JK is an interesting one, the organization don't seem as high on him as they leapfrogged Alfonso & G-Rod ahead of him, although i'm not sure why. For that reason, and the fact that Alfonso & Rodriguez seem quite popular, i'd be surprised if JK is on the roster next season.

Re: Catchers for 2008
I meant to add a conversation starter (because Molina is likely to be the preferred starter) In the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter, but who do people believe to be the best options out of Alfonso & Rodriguez (and Knoedler)?

I don't know why, but i get the feeling that Alfonso manages to pitchers a bit better. Rodriguez has the better arm, and they're probably similar offensively. Alfonso probably has a bit more power.

Re: Catchers for 2008
I think we should look heavily into trading Molina this offseason.  History is not generally kind to big catchers over the age of 30, and while his bat is valuable, he's no all-star.  He's had a decent season, and doesn't cost a ton per season, but still has a lot of length on his contract for a guy with his profile.

Sell high.

Who dat is? That's just Ortmeier's daddy.

Re: Catchers for 2008
Selling high is almost always good.  I believe the Giants missed their chance to do that with Matt Morris and have probably repeated their mistake with Noah Lowry.  Let's hope they don't err similarly with Bengie, who could actually have some trade value to the right team I would think.

Get rid of everyone making over a million this season.  I'm not talking about bad deals though.

Wake me up in March and ask me again...by then I might actually care about backup catchers.

Re: Catchers for 2008
FREE THE KANOODLER*!

Between Alfonso and Rodriguez, Rodrigues plays much more satisfying defense and has a cannon to second, but they have similar bats except for Alfonso's plus power. Rodriguez gets on base a little better, but I imagine Eliezar's power advantage would get him the nod in this case on a very power starved team.

But I want to see Justin, and his magic kanoodling powers.

Re: Catchers for 2008
i think Knoedler was DFA'd a year ago and went unclaimed by all other MLB teams, so the rest of the
league app. not to impressed by him either...just in case it wasnt mentioned...

Re: Catchers for 2008
This one seems fairly straightforward. Molina's already under contract, he was one of the few sort of bright spots this season, and he's not blocking any good prospect. So they might as well keep him. Of course, if he hits a ton in the first half next year, I'd be amenable to trading him to a contender at the deadline if we could get something good for him. (This presupposes that the Giants will not be contending next year, which is I think a pretty safe assumption.)

Trey Lunsford!
I only say that because he autographed my glove at a SF Giants game a number of seasons ago and then I never heard of him again.
I've got your back, Special Agent Jack Taschner.
