Re: Open Gameday Thread, 8/7
This is brilliant - Pedro's only value is because he's a great defensive 3b, while a horrific hitter. The way to make the worst of this situation? Put him at 1b (ruining any defensive value), and put the weak-armed Frandsen at 3b! Brilliant!

Why exactly isn't Klesko playing?

Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 8/7
In fairness, Feliz made a play at 1B last night that was probably the toughest play any infielder made all night: the tricky hop back-hand play with Lincecum covering the bag.

Krukow called it a 9.8 degree of difficulty on a scale of 1 to 10.

As for Klesko, he nevers seems to get to start vs. LHP (even though he hasn't been too bad against them this season.)

Bold Prediction: Klesko will finish the 2007 season with at least 20 HRs. (OPS+ is 129 as of 7/1/07)

Maybe I'm splitting hairs here, but why not leave Pedro at his more natural 3rd and play Frandsen at 1st?

It's beyond me why on a team with 3 guys who play 1st, none of them were there last night or tonight.  I know Richy is banged up, but come on now, this is just a farce.  Hey, look at us...we're a major league baseball team.  We've got 4 different guys playing first, and another 4 that play in center.

Stop playing head games with Frandsen and give him a solid week at the same position.  How hard is that?

7 years, $126 million
Also,
The Giants hold an $18 million option on Zito for 2014 with a $7 million buyout, making the contract worth a potential $137 million. The option becomes Zito's if he pitches 200 innings in 2013, the final guaranteed year, 400 innings over the final two years or 600 innings over the final three. Zito also has a complete no-trade clause for the entire length of the contract.

I was just noticing how Bacisk's and Zito's performances tonight are pretty similar.  Then I noticed that, on balance, Bacsik has pitched better this year than has Zito (better ERA, better WHIP).

I wonder how much Washington is paying Bacsik?  I'll bet you it's a lot less than what we're paying Zito.

If we were in the race in any way, I'd be really angry at Zito. But mostly I just feel bad for him right now. He's obviously tense and laboring under the expectations generated by the contract. He actually seems like a good guy so I hope he can figure something out over the last two months or over the winter. As things stand now, he's just moving us up the draft list.

As much as we hammer on Magowan for various and sundry reasons (mostly justified), there are so many little ways that they do things right, just in the presentation of Giants baseball.  Getting Joe Montana, Muhammad Ali and especially Hank Aaron to record the video messages is beyond classy (and big-time kudos to Aaron, for agreeing to do the video tribute, and doing it so beautifully).

It was interesting watching the ESPN channels after Bonds' homerun.

ESPN2 immediately had to interview Lance Williams (of Game of Shadows), who, gasp, had nothing but negative comments for Bonds, the record, and anyone that enjoyed this moment.  Garbage.

ESPN1 at least had a somewhat interesting discussion involving some former baseball players.  John Kruk had nothing but positive things to say about Bonds - I don't think I've seen someone defend him that much on ESPN before - which was cool.

Of course, though, now we get to enjoy all kinds of articles like the Yahoo one.  Ugh.

What will Pedro Gomez do now? What is his purpose in life?

I fear the wost for him... with 756 his career has officially ended. In my head, as the ball flew over the fence, i just saw him dropping his microphone, hanging his head, and walking away... wandering through the streets of San Francisco, mumbling words like "speculation", "steroids", and "legacy" under his breath. He will most likely become a heavy drinker, sipping E&J Brandy out of a plastic bag.

Not only was he hoarding the mic when Boch was up there, but he had to be the first to ask Barry a question, and followed it up a few moments later with another jack-ass inquisition which Barry called him out on.  The best part about the record going down tonight was that Pedro no longer must fear for his life when he's within a 100 mile radius of moi.

That was his "clarification" after the first statement.  I'm standing by my original assertion:
Feliz is an idiot and if he had not touched it, it had enough steam left for Molina to make the sweep tag easily. Molina was in position to take the throw straight. Feliz fucked it up and forced Molina into a last minute lunge for the ball with his momentum taking him away from the plate...ergo too late with his tag.

Actually, now that I think about it.  I don't care :D

On another note, Mike Bascik just gave an interview for the Nats station here, and he seems like a great guy who was simply trying to compete.  Not one iota of bitterness or anything.  He "threw the best I had" and even though he's on the wrong side of this, he isn't upset.
