D-Backs, Byrnes come to an agreement on extension

http://www.azcentral.com/sports/articles/0807brynes-ON-CR.html

Seems pretty relevant to the Giants, since everyone (including me) was sure he was destined to wear the orange and black.

I can't say I'm personally disappointed by this, though he does kill us.

Re: D-Backs, Byrnes come to an agreement on extens
By the way, does this possibly make Carlos Quentin and Carlos Gonzalez expendable?

Re: D-Backs, Byrnes come to an agreement on extens
I think so, the article states they there were shopping him around the trading deadline.

I'm not sure how I feel about Quentin, he's starting to get old (turns 25 at the end of this month) and has had trouble in the majors producing. I think he's also had a lot of nagging injuries.

Don't know whether to laugh or cry because 25 yrs of age for SF is mighty young.

Byrnes is having a solid year and is being rewarded. If SF signs FA OF it might be one of the CFs.

Re: D-Backs, Byrnes come to an agreement on extens
I do like Quentin though, I think he's just had some nagging injuries this year.

Plus, the D-Backs seem ready to cut ties with him after only 200 AB's this year, seems foolish to me.

That contract is positively Sabeanesque. Wow.

Re: D-Backs, Byrnes come to an agreement on extens
Many, if not most, free-agent deals (in my opinion) will be Sabeanesque.

Phew
I was living in fear we'd sign him over the winter.
Strikeouts are boring. Besides that, they're fascist. Not boring: Emmanuel Burriss. Not facist: THE RETURN OF SF Dugout

Re: D-Backs, Byrnes come to an agreement on extens
This is great news for us. He's basically the white Randy Winn and is extremely overrated because he sometimes "omg dives for balls!!"

I was really afraid that we might sign him to some huge retarded deal to play LF next year.

Brynes Career .268/.329/.457 OPS+ 102
Winn Career .285/.344/.421 OPS+ 100

He's having a career year at age 31? I'll pass on him.

don't forget he also runs out to his position!

he plays the game right, and that's GOT to be worth something.

Sure, but not 3/30 ;)

Re: D-Backs, Byrnes come to an agreement
Good for Byrnes.  A couple of years ago, he was just trying to catch on somewhere before AZ signed him.

This also makes Winn's deal seem reasonable.

Bold Prediction: Klesko will finish the 2007 season with at least 20 HRs. (OPS+ is 129 as of 7/1/07)

Re: D-Backs, Byrnes come to an agreement
Didn't the contracts of Pierre and Matthews kind of do this last offseason?

Re: D-Backs, Byrnes come to an agreement
Not really -- Pierre has been such a disaster that no one will compare his contract with anyone's except Zito's.

of course we're not signing Byrnes

Heh heh...does this mean Barry will be back next year?

I wouldn't be too surprised either way.

HTWG all the way.
Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.

Re: D-Backs, Byrnes come to an agreement on extens
This is great news, I didn't want that hack on the Giants next year anyways.
Well at least I don't have to watch baseball in Oakland...

Hmm
For some reason I feel like Byrnes is going to be the next FP in 10 years or so. I'll bet he'll pop up during broadcasts to tell us about the new Lou Seal doll.

Re: D-Backs, Byrnes come to an agreement on extens
Thank goodness. It wasn't long ago that Byrnes was an overgrown platoon player and I wouldn't be surprised if he is again soon.

He apparently got a full no trade clause too.

Wow.
