The Last Barry Bonds Diary Needed

Too much has been put squarely on Barry Bonds for this whole "Steroids Era" thing.  I get into it with friends all of the time (many of whom aren't giants fans, i didn't know that there were non-giants fans).  And I ask them two simple questions, which they can not answer:

  1.  When did the steriods era being?
  2.  When did it end?
And of course no one can definitively answer those two questions.  Oh sure we can speculate when it began, but you can't tell me that it has ended, because people keep getting suspended.  Not only that, but who is to say they are using a better masking agent or different, untraceable, drugs.

So what, Barry is about to break the great homerun record.  Roger Clemens has over 300 wins, has anyone checked his medicine cabinet yet?  sure he is sucking this year, but dude hasn't gotten any smaller is his 40s.

The only reason Barry Bonds is being thrown under the bus is because he is a "bad guy".  ask any reporter and they will tell you.  So because he is/was a bad guy to the press, they feel they have to create all of this "controversy" over the whole steroids thing.  is it cheating if you are taking a substance that isn't banned? or wasn't banned at the time?  i realize these are new ideas, but i get sick and tired of listening to midnight sports talk (look i was coming home from a concert and it was either midnight sports talk or hair growing commercials) and all of these idiots, who have never spoke to the guy, saying what a bad guy he is and he is a cheater and all of that shit.

i don't think anyone can argue that he didn't take anything, of course he did.  but so has everyone.  and just because he is at the brink of the "impossible" and he is a bad guy, we need to write books about him and boo even louder than normal (except when he hits a homerun then we stand and cheer).  i say F-U to all of the bonds haters.  i don't like the guy personally either, but i am not asking him to be a nice guy.  i am asking him to contribute to the teams success on the field.  if he wants to shoot up with roids, who the hell cares.  i haven't once heard him say to the kids that they should try it.

and they call them "performance enhancing" drugs.  isn't working out performance enhancing?  i mean i don't remember seeing mantle, aaron, ruth, cobb, williams, etc, lifting a weight.  hell most of them were lifting a beer.  it wasn't until the late 70s and early 80s did weight lifting start to become the thing to do.  so why isn't pujols or a-rod treated like bonds?  well, because they talk to the media, all media.

so for the last time, so what, bonds has taken steriods, other players have and other players still are.  so to the media, go fuck yourselves.  and lastly, to san diego, thank you for showing class as he hit it.  it is nice to see that there are still people who appreciate the rare talent that bonds is, roids or not.

Thank you. For years I've maintained that Clemens is probably using or did use. Nobody seems too keen on accusing him, and he rivals Barry in the asshole department. I'm not sure why Clemens is seemingly exempt.

I subscribe that Clemens has had a couple "Double Secret Probations" the last few years a la MJ's two years off from basketball.

Last year he pitched his first game in game #51 of the season.  hmmmm hmmm???

Surgery enhances performance. None of the old timers had Tommy John Surgery or arthroscopic surgery. If they got injured they were fucked.

What about cortizone? that's a steroid and it's perfectly legal and it enhances player performance.

  1. When did it begin? Probably late 1980's
  2. When did it end? Not as of today
but dude hasn't gotten any smaller is his 40s.
Neither did I and neither did any of my non-using steroid buddies. Call it a gift from God.

The only reason Barry Bonds is being thrown under the bus is because he is a "bad guy".
Yes, he is considered a "bad guy" but the main reason is that he is the best baseball player to use steroids and he is chasing the HR record.

i don't think anyone can argue that he didn't take anything, of course he did.  but so has everyone
While many have, not everyone.

i haven't once heard him say to the kids that they should try it.
No. He has yet to admit using PEDs.

so why isn't pujols or a-rod treated like bonds?  well, because they talk to the media, all media.

"Get the goods on them and they will"

Really?  Are Sheffield and Giambi treated the same?  Also, it seems like a good time to point out that Pujols has had his share of media issues (especially last post season).  However, reporters share a special hate for Barry.  When Albert's personal trainer was found to be the HGH distributor in the Jason Grimsley case the trail never went any further.  Hell, SI went as far as to call Poo-Holes the best clean player in baseball.  The difference in media coverage between Bonds and every other athlete is absurd.  I think we can all agree on that point.

I agree that not everyone has taken steroids, but how can you separate who has from who hasn't?  I know I have no idea where to start.  For my money I will just enjoy the best player in my lifetime while I still can.  I imagine being a Giants fan has to be a hell of a lot harder if you deny yourself that.  More power to you for sticking with this team.  On the Bonds issue we will continue to agree to disagree.

Re: The Last Barry Bonds Diary Needed
There was a lot of speculation about Pujols' trainer being the one who supplied HGG to Grimsley, but it turned out not to be true once the names in the affidavit came to light.

Re: The Last Barry Bonds Diary Needed
According to the guy who taught Alderson/Beane how to be Moneyball guys, his website noted that the homerun rate suddenly jumped up in 1993 (if I remember right) and has continued high since then.  Why, he won't speculate but it is clear that baseball's offense has been different since the change.

According to a study I saw on The Hardball Times, which I recently saw duplicated in a Baseball Prospectus book (at least it appears to be the same), taking up a chapter, when you study the peak homerun years, only hitters under, like 5 HR a year and those over 30, didn't have an unusual number of peak years, vs. history.  So it appears that a lot of hitters are doing something different that resulted in more homeruns, which of course points at PEDs.  And given how many pitchers we have seen caught using PEDs, you have to assume that an equal number of pitchers were using as well.

I didn't know that Pujol's trainer was caught supplying Grimsley.  I guess he wasn't stupid enough to keep a detailed file on him.

What I say now is that if Bonds was using, he almost certainly is not using today because the government should be tailing him 24/7 trying to get evidence.  Look at how desperate they are, trying to coerce a nobody like Grimsley to walk up to Bonds and start talking about steroids use.  They want him and they want him bad.

Look at the FBI files on John Lennon, piles and piles of stuff, you have to believe that Bonds is getting similar treatment.

So if he is still using, then what is the explanation for his continuing to do well today?  HGH has been discredited as a PED;  I'd been thinking that's what Barry used after getting caught.  So that is something to consider today as well.

Don't Blame Barry
that's the conclusion of this interesting article on whether professional athletes' use of PEDs influences high school use.

Yeah Albort's link to the Grimsley case was the Schadenfreude I'd been waiting for. I was hoping it'd blow up into a big fat scandal.

Re: Albert's personal trainer???!
At the time I had thought that there would be Barry-esque evidence compiled versus Clemens and Poo-Holes, which in turn would shed some perspective to the "Bonds is the ultimate evil" camp.  Of course it was just wishful thinking because nobody really cares unless Barry is involved.

any roid scandal involving a "nice guy" like Poo Holes will make the scandal disappear. Bonds it the target. everything else is to get to Bonds. If it leads somewhere else, it'll be brushed under the rug.
