More moves on the way?

The Giants' official site makes it sound like another trade might be made soon:

"The Giants didn't announce the move until shortly before gametime, generating speculation that Sabean was trying to engineer a trade involving a veteran such as Ray Durham or Ryan Klesko.

"There were a couple of scenarios," Sabean admitted. But he noted that he ran out of time to complete a deal -- "We had to get it in before the game" -- besides the simple fact that the Giants re-evaluated Aurilia's condition during pregame drills."

The rest of the article can be found here.

I wonder what Sabean has got going on . . .

Re: More moves on the way?
If it was that close a thing, we might have a transaction right after the end of this game tonight.

Re: More moves on the way?
It's really nice to see that about Matt Cain, although his "quote" about Morris is a load of very professional BS. There's no possible way Cain saw somebody throwing strikes by watching Morris the last few weeks. Maybe Lincecum.

Still, very classy quote from Cain. I love him so much. His last start was extremely heartening, if simultaneously heartbreaking.

Re: More moves on the way?
There might not be one. He was contemplating a transaction but chose to put to Aurilia on the DL instead.

Re: More moves on the way?
I agree the whole thing is presented in an extremely veiled sort of way, but the fact that it was close enough for Sabean to comment on makes me pretty curious, and apparently unreasonably impatient.

Durham is signed thru 2008 @ 7.5M
Would be great if they can unload the salary of Ray Durham. Even if only for a fungo bat.

Re: More moves on the way?
I know we all are down on Sabean, but if he manages to move Ray Durham with the other team eating his contract he should get a 10 year extension. I would think guys like Sweeney and Klesko will be easy to move however. And don't expect anything more than a prospect. Don't forget that guys now have to pass through waivers. I know the Miguel Cabrera thing was a joke, but him and many others would not get through at this time.

Re: More moves on the way?
I think Klesko might be tough to deal.  Since he's so cheap, he'd have a tough time passing through waivers.
Bold Prediction: Klesko will finish the 2007 season with at least 20 HRs. (OPS+ is 129 as of 7/1/07)

Re: More moves on the way?
you're right, but they can trade him to the team that claims him. For a trade to happen so fast after Aug 1, that's probably what happened here. Some team claimed somebody, and Sabean is motivated to move the player, but they just couldn't get together on what player to accept for him.

Who have the Giants waived?  I haven't seen anything published.

Re: More moves on the way?
they never publish what players were waived. The stuff usually leaks out, but no teams ever admit to putting a player on waivers, it's bad for the player-management relationship. It wouldn't be hard for us to figure out the list for ourselves though. It would be pretty much everybody except for the young pitchers. In fact it could even be them too, since you are allowed to pull players back if they are claimed. I have heard of some teams putting their entire team on waivers at this period just to see who has any market value.

Re: More moves on the way?
That's what I've heard, that teams just put their whole roster on waivers to mask who they are trying to move.

Re: More moves on the way?
On a somewhat-related subject, if the Giants don't deal Roberts before next season, is anyone else thinking that Roberts/Davis might make a nifty leadoff platoon?

What little I've seen of Davis has been pretty impressive.  Dude looks like a player.

Bold Prediction: Klesko will finish the 2007 season with at least 20 HRs. (OPS+ is 129 as of 7/1/07)

Re: More moves on the way?
Yeah, I have to assume that's what the Giants were thinking, Roberts needed a RH CF to platoon with him, and it would be nice to get one with speed so that the lineup can just stay the same.  Obviously, our main OF prospects are better against RHP, so they asked for Davis who has a history of good OBP and a lot of speed and some basestealing ability.

But don't get too enamored with him, his history is not that great, hopefully 2007 is his breakout year, but at 26 (soon to be 27) he's a bit old for the league so that could be why he's doing better this year.  Hopefully Roberts can pass some tips to him regarding getting on base and stealing bases (plus to our speedsters in the minors...)

Re: More moves on the way?
I agree on that, but since they have no power, it would be very nice to move Randy Winn to one of those ten teams on his list. You really need corner outfielders with power to surround this pair.

Re: More moves on the way?
Ninety minutes before the Giants had to activate Misch, Sabean met with manager Bruce Bochy, some coaches and the medical staff. At the same time, Sabean was attempting to clear the roster spot by trading a player, believed to be Mark Sweeney, possibly to the Padres. Sabean would not discuss any specific player. When asked if a deal fell through, he said, "No, we just ran out of time for today. You have to get the move in before the game."

Re: More moves on the way?
Shelving Aurilia also enabled the Giants to keep outfielders Fred Lewis and Rajai Davis on the roster for further evaluation of their skills.

How much "evaluation" is going on watching them play defense for 1-2 innings per night?

PLAY THESE GUYS!

The Fringe was right.

Re: More moves on the way?
To be fair, if we're talking Freddie, it's "evaluation" of him "playing" "defense".

I still have hope for his bat, but mefears his upside is Mike Cameron--not bad per se, but less neat when you replace the gold glove with one made of depleted uranium.
