Maybe he'll show he can start, save Lince's arm, and Lowry will use the extra rest to stop Morissing his trade value.

Re: Sanchez to start Saturday
Does anyone else think he looks like a crippled, 80 y/o man from the start of his jersey down in that picture?

Re: Sanchez to start Saturday
Other players are expected to come up when the Minor League season ends next week. Eliezer Alfonzo is a likely candidate, and Bochy said the team would look to bring up five or six Minor Leaguers for some September experience. He added that the callups would not be limited to the current 40-man roster.

Let the speculation begin!!!

Timpner?
Bowker?
a pitcher?

VILLALONA?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!

This can get really interesting.  I hope to see Bowker up here.

Re: Sanchez to start Saturday
I would like to see Bowker called up too, but I would think finding playing time would be tough unless he benches Winn and Roberts for most of the month.

Re: and ????
I don't think Bochy has the balls to do it to his veteran players. About two weeks ago I heard he took Roberts aside and said he would be playing less because they wanted to look at Rajai Davis, yet Roberts has still played virtually every day.

Re: and ????
Dave has pretty much been platooned, as he likely should have been all season.  I believe that Dave has played recently against a lefty only when Barry needed rest.

I guess the Giants COULD play all righthanded hitters or switch hitters against lefties if no one of those guys need a rest.

They could go with Bengie, Aurilia, Ray, Omar, Pedro, Randy, Rajai and Dan.

There was an article in today's paper comparing Ortmeier to Holliday of the Rockies.  I don't see Dan as being that good (although Holliday is overrated due to his playing in Coors field, as one can see if he looks at Holliday's road hitting compared to his home hitting), but I DO see Dan as a platoon possiblity playing primarily against lefthanders.

Dan is a pretty decent righthanded hitter, although he's not a good from the left side.

Re: and ????
according to Dave, Bochy told him he would be sitting against alot of righties as well. He was platooned BEFORE Bochy had that talk with him. Maybe now with Schierholtz here, Roberts will sit against some righties as well.

Re: Sanchez to start Saturday
dumb question but...they have to be added to the 40-man before they can be called up right? i thought this was stated elsewhere...

in any case, i would like to see O. Matos, Palmer,
and a few of the relievers down at Connecticut

Re: Sanchez to start Saturday
Yes, must be on 40 man roster. Schierholtz was not in Fresno line-up this evening, however, Eliezer Alfonzo and Clay Timpner were. Bowker was in the Connecticut line-up.

im not too much in favor of DFA'ing anyone right now
just to see some new faces...you'd think MLB could
allow it- would seem to benefit the players imo...

More Info
Russ Ortiz had TJ surgery. "Russ was adamant that he wants to keep pitching," Groeschner said. "This will give him the best chance to do that."
  • Sanchez and outfielder Nate Schierholtz will be recalled from Fresno today when major league rosters expand, Bochy said. The club will call up three or four more players, including catcher Eliezer Alfonzo, after the Triple-A season ends Monday. Outfielder Fred Lewis will follow as soon as his sprained ankle heals. Bochy said one of the call-ups could be a player who isn't on the current 40-man roster, possibly outfielder Clay Timpner.
  • As expected, the Giants sent 17-year-old infielder Angel Villalona to finish his year at Salem-Keizer in the short-season Northwest League. The $2.1 million bonus baby hit .285 with five home runs in 200 at-bats in the rookie-level Arizona League. The AZL Giants lost 8-5 to Seattle's club in the championship game Thursday.

Re: Sanchez to start Saturday
I'd rather see McClain come up here and pinch hit late in the game against a lefty than Guillermo Rodriguez or Eliezer Alfonzo, that's for sure.

Re: Sanchez to start Saturday
But with the Giants, it's all about the future -- and the future isn't Scott McClain.

It would be great to see a career minor leaguer such as McClain get a shot -- but he would seem to be more valuable to a team that was pursuing a playoff spot.

Re: Sanchez to start Saturday
Well, it's not like the Giants have a legit 1B prospect that McClain would be blocking. Maybe he fills in cheaply and sorta-effectively for a year or two.

Re: Sanchez to start Saturday
The Giants need to find a way to trade for a legitimate first base prospect.  If not, I guess McClain could be a cheap alternative to hold down the position.

But if they were to play say Dan Ortmeier there, Dan probably wouldn't do all that much, but he WOULD gain experience for down the line when it might matter.

Re: Sanchez to start Saturday
this is what i thought too..except not necessarily
a prospect, i think they should spend some real $$$
for a LHH power-hitting 1B..then Ortmeier could spell him vs. some LHP starters...i would like to see someone like a Jim Thome, maybe a little younger
and better, but there doesnt look to be anyone out there in FA market this winter..id like to see them try to sign Mike Sweeney, but i doubt he has much
power left...probably takes a lot to get a Carlos Pena now also

Re: Sanchez to start Saturday
Sabean said on his show the other day that it would be "quite a leap" for him to go into next year with Ortmeier as 1B, so I think we can assume he's going to go out and bring in someone off the market. Which, I frankly agree with. Hopefully it'll be someone who represents an upgrade from Aurilia/Klesko (soory, Goofus).
My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.

Re: Sanchez to start Saturday
Pena says he loves it in Tampa and wants to sign a new deal there. I'm thinking when his agent mentions numbers, Tampa will quickly be out of the mix. Signing Pena might make a little too much sense for the Giants to have it actually happen.

I only saw a couple of innings today (including Atchison allowing the two runners to score).  How did Sanchez look overall?  I like the 7so/1bb

Re: Sanchez to start Saturday
im not the expert, but he looked decent to me..
he gave up some cheap hits that should have been outs- at least 3...sawed off the leadoff hitter's bat in the 1st inning but the ball leaked thru the infield, and 2 other  cheapiesthat i can remember..
also a rare error by Omar got him into some trouble
...i think 2 LOB in the 1st and 2 LOB in the 2nd
then good until the Atchison inning, which i missed
