Denker the PTBNL in Sweeney deal

At least according to the void that True Blue LA:

According to the Inland Empire 66ers broadcast, high A second baseman Travis Denker was the P in the Mark Sweeney for a PBTNL deal. Denker had the reputation of being unable to handle high A coming into this season, but he's bounced back by hitting .298/.371/.457 in high A this year, albeit with a .339 BABIP with a 12.6% line drive rate.

He's a 22 year-old 2B with .279/.377/.460 career stats.

Re: Denker the PTBNL in Sweeney deal
he is a small guy (5'9) with power. in 2005, as a 19 year old in i believe low a ball, he hit 21 homeruns in 358 at bats. In 2006, he struggled in high a for a while, but he seems to be turning it around this year .294/.370/.451 with 10 hrs in 450 at bats. He is 22 years old right now. He has a long road ahead of him if he wants to make the majors, but i am certainly rooting for him.

Bottom line: i'm very happy we got an actual prospect for the PH Sweeney. Nice deal Sabes

Yup
That's a lot more than I ever dreamed he would get for Sweeney?  Hey Ned, there's more where that came from!

about as good a return as you could hope for for Mark Sweeney

Re: Denker the PTBNL in Sweeney deal
Comments on Denker:

He's gotten very mixed reviews through his career.  He still plays second base, but Baseball America insists he's a future left fielder.  He is 5'9, and having just turned 22, still not (too) old for the California league.

The 21st round draft pick in 2003 has progressed slowly.  He made his High-A debut in 2005, and struggled heavily in 31 games.  He struggled again there in 2006, splitting time.  But in 2007, he's batting .294/.369/.450.  While he's repeating a level, it's in a brand new league, as the Dodgers switched from the Florida State League to the California League this year, so that minimizes the 'third time, he'd better do well' excuse.  However, the Brea outfielder coming home reasoning might ring true.

Denker's strength is his bat, and his power.  He's got a very good mix of power and plate discipline.  However, his power has dropped the past three years.  He had 23 HR in 132 games in 2005, 16 in 129 games in 2006 at the same levels, and has just 10 this year in the California league.  However, he has become a better base runner, with a career high 8 stolen bases this year in 10 attempts.  However, he obviously is not going to be a speedster.

Defensively, his reputation has taken a series of hits.  He doesn't have the range to play second, is not smooth at all, and doesn't have a strong arm, according to scouting reports.  He has 13 errors already on the season, having 15 in 2005, and 22 in 2006.  A move to the outfield seems likely, especially with how stacked the Giants system is in infielders, but as an outfielder with a 15-20 HR/year potential and sub-par athleticism, his value takes a dip.

All in all, Denker is a long shot prospect after so many repeats of High-A, and the obvious flaws.  But he stands out in the Giants system as being a power prospect.  If he does move to left fielder, could he become a younger John Bowker, who finally busted out in Double-A after a couple of years scuffling in High-A?  That's not a poor thing, and that's quite a haul for Mark Sweeney.

Re: Denker the PTBNL in Sweeney deal
Oh well, he's better than nothing. Mark Sweeney has done nothing for LA, and he was wasted here. Are we sure than this website is correct??

Re: Denker the PTBNL in Sweeney deal
Actually, I have no idea if the report is correct. If it is, I'm glad we got a player out of it.

Confirm
It was also reported today in the San Bernardino Sun.  Denker was informed of the trade as he arrived at he ballpark for the 66'ers game yesterday.  He grew up in SoCal as an Angels and Dodger fan, but said he was excited to be going to the Giants organization.  Says he wants to beat the Dodgers now.

Re: Denker the PTBNL in Sweeney deal
I think the point is that it's entirely possible we could have just gotten cash for Sweeney, so even organizational filler isn't bad.

Re: Denker the PTBNL in Sweeney deal
I think we are all agreed that if Denker gets a late season call up some time in the next decade and delivers a single hit, walk or sacrifice in a key situation, or perhaps even a stolen base as a pinch runner or one good play in the field, this deal was a total heist.

Re: Denker the PTBNL in Sweeney deal
I dunno...I hear the Inland Empire 66ers have some pretty sweet bat racks and ball bags that would have looked mighty nice with a San Jose logo on it.

Re: Denker the PTBNL in Sweeney deal
It's also been confirmed on the Giants' official site.

Denker is 193 lbs, and that's on a 5'9" frame.  I hope to God that the 193 is muscle.

Alright, this adopted Giant limbo is finally over.  Even though I've never met a guy named Travis that I liked, make me proud Denky!  (Denkster?  Slam Denk?  Denkin' Donuts?  I have no idea, really)
Adopted Giant: Travis Denker. Good?

Re: Denker the PTBNL in Sweeney deal
That reminds me. I'll see about doing that adoption stuff I said I'd do sometime early this week.

No significant changes. I'm just going to clean up the presentation some and make sure all the players look right.

Re: Denker the PTBNL in Sweeney deal
Power with plate discipline, bad range, no arm.  Sounds like a DH to me.
Bold Prediction: Klesko will finish the 2007 season with at least 20 HRs. (OPS+ is 129 as of 7/1/07)
