Volcano Watching

Tommorrow night I'm headed with my girlfriend to Spokane to watch the Salem Kizer Volcanoes. For those of you who are in the know, who are the guys to watch? I know Sharlon Schoop has gotten some mention in places, but I'm not familiar enough with the Giants prospects to know who else is exciting on this team, although I do know the Volcanoes are mopping up the floor with the rest of the league this year.

For the rest of you, consider this an open thread for tips on enjoying a minor league ballgame. Personally, I like to get the best seats available, because they are all so affordable; something I cannot exactly do in SF. I'm also a big fan of finding the right promotional night, if you have the option. The Spokane club occasionally has a night where they offer all hot dogs and cheap beer for only a buck, which is a pretty sweet deal for ballpark food.

Love the minor league games!
I always try to get good seats behind home plate, near the scouts. Most of em are very knowledgable and friendly, and I've picked up a ton of good info from chatting with them.

Last SJ Giants game we went too, we sat right behind  Mel Didier -- the guy given partial credit for that famous Bob Gibson home run. Very nice guy.

The promotions can be great, and some of the very best heckling I've ever heard was @ minor league yards. Have a great time!

Billy Hayes: Nine more big-league plate appearances than you.

Re: Volcano Watching
Chad Rothford is supposed to be pretty exciting--a big first baseman who can mash. How long has it been since we've seen someone like that with the Giants? Danny Otero leads the NWL in saves so if the Volcanoes have a lead, expect to see him. Daniel Turpen just joined the team. Joe Paterson is listed on the roster now too, but I don't know if he's appeared in any games up there. Those two were a part of Oregon State's back to back CWS titles. Apparently they're big on the Beavers there. The mascot made an appearance at yesterday's game.
Strikeouts are boring. Besides that, they're fascist. Not boring: Emmanuel Burriss. Not facist: THE RETURN OF SF Dugout

Re: Volcano Watching
LOL - i thought this post was referring to the fact that we've got Tomko (2-8, 5.57 ERA) vs. Zito (7-10, 5.28 ERA) tonite.  Who'll be the first to blow?

ditto on delorean's comments.  i recently went to a Staten Island Yankees game and sat behind the plate with the scouts.  Pretty good time, and you can clearly hear every heckler.

Re: Volcano Watching
Does that mean that Jimmy Buffet's actually playing there?  Cool
Bold Prediction: Klesko will finish the 2007 season with at least 20 HRs. (OPS+ is 129 as of 7/1/07)

Re: Volcano Watching
The Volcanoes are fairly devoid of prospects this year.  Schoop may be the top one, although I wonder about that because he seems to have received less playing time than I expected.  Maybe it's just a matter of perception.

The offense has been led by a lot of late-round draft picks getting a lot of extra base hits.  The pitching staff is also a lot of late-round draft picks not allowing so many hits or walks.

Along with Schoop, another top Latin American with the Volcanoes is RHP Waldis Joaquin.  I don't know how his stuff compares to before he had Tommy John surgery.  He's been used in fairly short stints so far.

Here are the 2007 draft picks with the Volcanoes, sorted by round, through the first 25 rounds:
1s. C Jackson Williams

  1. C Michael Ambort
  2. RHP Daniel Turpen
  3. LHP Joe Paterson
  4. 3B Andrew Davis
  5. LHP Craig Clark
  6. OF Bruce Edwards
  7. RHP Steven Edlefsen
  8. LHP Andrew DeLaGarza
  9. RHP David Mixon
  10. RHP Daniel Otero
  11. 2B Brock Bond
Jesse English was a 6th round pick back in 2002, and the only other guy on the team who can remotely be considered a high draft pick.
