OT: Operation Schaden-Ned

From the LA Times:

But Sweeney, a pinch-hitter who was picked up last week in a trade with the San Francisco Giants, made a mental blunder that resulted in the game's final out. Appearing to lose track of the number of outs, Sweeney strayed too far from first base when Juan Pierre popped up. Catcher Brad Ausmus caught the ball in foul territory and threw out Sweeney to end the game. Shea Hillenbrand was on second base.

Re: OT: Operation Schaden-Ned
On the last day of the season in LA, the Dodgers vs the Giants, bottom of the ninth, the Bums have Mark Sweeney on third base with only one out in a 3-2 ball game. The Bums best hitter, James Loney is at the plate, so they're feeling pretty good. The Dodgers need to win to get into the playoffs.

Suddenly, Sweeney takes off from third before Hennessey throws the pitch. They tag him out easily, to the shock of 50,000 mouthbreathing fans in Chavez Ravine.

James Loney is so shocked he takes 3 straight fastballs right down the middle without even realizing Hennessey threw one. The stadium is completely silent.

Sweeney bursts out of the dugout and rips off his jersey to reveal a Giants jersey underneath it. The Giants pick him up and carry him off the field on their shoulders.

Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

You left out the best part
and Andy LaRoche is the PTBNL

Re: You left out the best part
I have a friend that knows Jack Hiatt and he swears that Hiatt told him that the Giants have a list of five players they can pick one from, and Andy LaRoche is on the list. I told him Hiatt must be pulling his leg, but when you see them pick up someone like Shea Hillenbrand and play him at third instead of LaRoche, it makes you wonder.

LaRoche's back is hurt
If they even played Delwyn Young for a bit when he was up LaRoche was probably their first choice.

Also unless said list is like Kershaw, LaRoche, Elbert, Meloan, Abreu I don't see why Sabean hasn't already chosen Andy.

Re: You left out the best part
LaRoche played in the NL at one point this year, I believe that automatically rules him out. As I understand it, a PTBNL must not have played in the same league as the team he is traded to.

Re: You left out the best part
I think it only matters what league they were in at the time of the trade.

Re: OT: Operation Schaden-Ned
Jason Schmidt, also wearing a Giants jersey, runs out and high fives Sweeney. Shea Hillenbrand grounds into a double play.

Re: OT: Operation Schaden-Ned
Schmidt started the game and purposely left a fat pitch out over the middle for Bonds to hit a 3 run HR off of. (He was supposed to be intentionally walking him.)

Re: OT: Operation Schaden-Ned
It's important to note that Hillenbrand grounds into a double play not because he's a Giant at heart, but because he's really really terrible.
Steve Kline: He's pretty okay!

Re: OT: Operation Schaden-Ned
Wow. There is nothing wrong with this story.

I'm a little surprised Hillenbrand made it all the way to second, but it wouldn't have been nearly as perfect if he hadn't.

Re: OT: Operation Schaden-Ned
About the only thing that would make it more perfect was if Hillenbrand were caught off second for a triple play.

Schaden-Ned: I don't know what that means, but Mark Sweeney stomach-punched Dodger fans.
Bold Prediction: Klesko will finish the 2007 season with at least 20 HRs. (OPS+ is 129 as of 7/1/07)

To be honest
Other than the leftside of the infield, the SF defense has not been particularly stellar this season.

Re: dunno, a word with 2 syllables in its name?
The name of a word??? I'm not sure how that is even a response to the question in question, or any question for that matter...

In any case, SF's defense has been SIGNIFICANTLY better than Pittsburgh's, regardless of how either team stacks up relative to the rest of the league.

Scully scored a point with me, however (Sorry that Sweeney had to be the cause of it though):

Re: OT: Operation Schaden-Ned
"Shea Hillenbrand was on second base."

I can see that line concluding just about any sad tale:

"For never was a story of more woe,
Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.
Shea Hillendbrand was on second base."

Or, say, Charlotte's Web: "No one was with her when she died. Shea Hillenbrand was on second base."

I say to Kevin Correia what Laurence Olivier said to Neil Diamond in The Jazz Singer: "I hef no son!"

(Except for Shea Hillenbrand, who, defying all the percentages, somehow got to second base.)

Re: OT: Operation Schaden-Ned
"Oh, Jake," Brett said, "we could have had such a damned good time together."
Ahead was a mounted policeman in khaki directing traffic. He raised his baton. The car slowed suddenly pressing Brett against me. Shea Hillenbrand was on second base.
"Yes," I said. "Isn't it pretty to think so?"

Re: OT: Operation Schaden-Ned
I seriously think Coletti is trying to get EVERY ex Giant on his team. Someday Ned, you may have to look at other players, not that its not flattering... but our relationship is over. Please, don't make a scene here... Someone will like you. You have a very good looking... is that my phone? Excuse me for a moment.

Mustache Rack?
A mustache rack... a mustache rack. I don't even own a mustache, let alone many mustaches that would necessitate an entire rack. What am I gonna do... with a mustache rack?
