The Giants have employed an interesting strategy
They've got the low-risk angle by focusing on their mega-strength: Developing pitching.

But they've also got the high-reward angle by focusing on young pitchers that exhibit signs of being special, sometimes flying below the radar- they often pick guys that few would have thought of at that point in the draft.

Unfortunately, that strategy has got to change, especially if they have a shot at 1 of the 2 great hitters in next years draft.

Re: Good News!
You're welcome, xathan.

I noticed this part of the press release:

The Giants have signed 45 of their 52 selections from the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, including each of their first 29 picks

Is anyone keeping track of the seven late round picks who didn't sign? Anyone know anything about them?

Re: Good News!
Maybe Steve or Brute can comment on this, but isn't that an unusually large number of picks to sign?

Re: Good News!
I know Brute brought it up, that it was a lot of signings this time around.

As for those who didn't sign...Myles Schroder went to my college last season. I'll poke around and see if he'll be returning to DVC's team again this year. He missed the last six games of DVC's season with an injury, so maybe that had something to do with his signability? Tyler Landendorf was a frosh shortstop on Howard JC's team in Texas and played in the Texas Collegiate Baseball League over the summer. He was drafted 34th round this year by the Giants, and 34th round by the Yankees in 2006 following his senior year in HS. Wouldn't be surprised if he returned to school again. Andrew Barbosa went 48th round this year after one season at JC. He was drafted by the Giants in the 15th round last year following his senior year of high school. Didn't sign either time.

That's all I have.

Strikeouts are boring. Besides that, they're fascist. Not boring: Emmanuel Burriss. Not facist: THE RETURN OF SF Dugout

Re: Good News!
Actually, this is where it gets interesting.  It looks like OF Schroder (27th round) actually has signed, along with RHP Drew Bolin (23rd; both are indicated as unsigned by BA).  The Giants said they signed their top 29 picks, and Schroder is 29th.  RHP Dan McDaniel was their 30th pick (28th round).

The addition of Bowlin and Schroder to the list leaves McDaniel, SS Tyler Ladendorf (34th), RHP Paul Clemens (36th), C Phil Disher (45th), OF John Rye (46th), LHP Ryan Verdugo (47th) and LHP Andrew Barbosa (48th) all unsigned.

There is one disappointment and a couple of surprises in that list.  Ladendorf is disappointing, though not surprising.  According to BA, he turned down a 6-figure number from the Yankees in the same draft position last year, so he was a long shot this year.  However, Ladendorf was one of the fastest players in the entire draft, and would've fit the draft philosophy well.

The surprises are Disher and Rye, the two 4-year college players.  Both were Juniors, so they are going back to school, but I honestly thought they were good chances to sign.  Interesting note: Disher was one of the catchers for postseason-bound South Carolina.  The other was drafted by the Giants 5 round later, Trent Kline (another Junior).  Kline signed.  BTW, they are teammates of potential Top 5 pick Justin Smoak.

Major leage contract?
When prospects sign a major league contract, does that mean they are instantly on the 40-man roster? I'm not quite sure I understand the concept.

by xanthan on Aug 15, 2007 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Re: Major leage contract?
It does and it means that the team has to use an option every year the player is sent to the minors. I read somewhere that it's not too difficult to get that sort of player a 4th option year, but it severely impacts the amount of minor league development time a player can have.

Apparently though, if Brackman gets TJ Surgery and goes on the 60-day DL, that won't count as an option year.

Still, it seems like a really risky deal on a guy who really wasn't that good in college to begin with.

He says that he believes the Giants had the best draft in baseball this year (contingent on Bumgarner being signed, which has now happened).

Also, (again) if anyone has or knows of video for Zito (especially side view) for him, could you send him an email about it?  He has some video, but he isn't sure if it is useable.

Down the Stairs
Hey, that was me.  I'm recovered now.  I still would prefer that we had drafted a hitter like Mills or Heyward, but I'll live with this.  Drafting Alderson, who I like better, second took some of the sting out.

Now that everybody is signed, this does represent a tremendous infusion of talent into the organization.  Add in the addition of Tim Lincecum just last year plus Big V and we might actually have a future to look forward to!

I would anticipate almost a coplete remaking of our top 10 prospects with at least half coming in at under 20 yo.  Now THAT's progress!

One word of caution.  By the time the youngsters are ready to make an impact, Cain and Lowry will be on the threshold of free agency and Tim won't be far behind.

Some more scoop.
It would seem that Bumgarner, a graduate of South Caldwell High School in Hudson, N.C., might not develop as quickly as Lincecum, whom the Giants plucked out of the University of Washington. But Evans said that first-round status is an equalizer, indicating that Bumgarner could be on a fast track to the Major Leagues.

"When you're looking at the first round, there's not as much difference between a high school pick and a college pick," Evans said.

Bumgarner, who received a $2 million bonus, and Fairley, whose bonus was $1 million,  will begin their Giants careers at instructional league in mid-September.

Re: Some more scoop.
I wouldn't expect Bumgarner or Fairley to develop as quickly as Lincecum. We're talking just graduated barely of voting age teenagers versus someone who looks like he's a few years shy of high school graduation.

This is probably a ginormous "duh" statement but I'm actually okay with the Giants drafting HS players because they can spend three, four, even five years in the minors and still be young enough to quell the crowing about OH HE'S TOO OLD FOR BLAH BLAH LEVEL.

Fast tracked for an 18 year old pitcher who has a lot of room to grow still...what's that, three years? More? Timmy's a freak of nature in that he was up and contributing less than a calendar year after he was drafted. No way in Hades should the MadBum be ready that quickly.

Re: Some more scoop.
Bumgarner's problem is that he doesn't really have a secondary offering. He just started throwing breaking stuff this year. I think the speed at which he reaches the majors will be dependent on how well he can develop a breaking pitch.

Re: The Giants sign Bumgarner
+1 on Xanthan.

I'm not too sure about "fast track," but I can actually see Bumgarner making his debut at 21 or 22.  If his fastball and command for it is that good right now, if he can maintain it it'll help out quite a bit in his success.

I wonder what offspeed pitches he'd be learning.  I assume he already throws a change; I wonder with his arm action if they'll be suggesting he throw a slider or a curve.  It'd be badass if he could develop a solid cutter.

Re: Bumgarner Draft Report
Thanks, Wil!

But I meant I wonder what the organization would have him throw.  Would they have him throw both the curve and the slider?  I get the feeling with his arm motion the curve (like Sanchez) might not be the pitch for him as compared to the slider.

Anyone with good knowledge of pitching mechanics know if either pitch would be particularly harmful to his motion?

Brian Anderson: converting saves and dominating as best he can.

by Anticon23 on Aug 15, 2007 3:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sidearm
If you watch his milb.com draft report video, Bumgarner has a very low arm slot, almost sidearm.  The comparison to Sanchez is valid as their deliveries are almost identical.  That arm slot tends to flatten out breaking balls.  Sanchez is trying to develop a knuckle curve which several people, including Bengie Molina, have pointed out generally works better with an over-the-top delivery.  IMO, a cutter might be the best option...4 seam, 2 seam, cutter, change.  With good velocity and good control, that might be a pretty good arsenal.

by DrBGiantsfan on Aug 15, 2007 3:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Re: Sidearm
Thanks, DrB!

I was thinking along the same lines.  I hope he picks up the slider, I think it could have a hard sweep to it, a la Randy Johnson (albeit not nearly as good).  That cutter could be devastating if developed.

Brian Anderson: converting saves and dominating as best he can.

Re: Sidearm
Dr. B is spot on with his arm angle stuff. It's harder to stay on top of a slider or curve ball the lower your arm slot is. That doesn't mean that he won't be able to throw a good curve or slider but it does mean it might take him a while to get a feel for the pitch.

From the scouting report that I read on him, his early breaking stuff is pretty slurvy without much bite.

Don't lefties take longer to develop - I don't have any idea why, but it seems that Randy Johnson didn't get his act together until his mid 20's and Sandy Koufax took a few years to develop his control.  I wouldn't be surprised if we have to wait a few years for MadBum to reach the Majors.

Re: The Giants sign Bumgarner
I think with Randy Johnson it was more the mechanical problem of him being 800 feet tall with a 300 foot wingspan.

Unusually high release point + unusually long arms is a mechanical disadvantage, as the angle of his release point at the joints has to be more exact for the release point at his hand to be in the right place.

This is a major mechanical oversimplification of his early problems, which had a lot more factors, but being big was one of his earliest and most lasting hurdles.

Re: The Giants sign Bumgarner
The same things, though, were always his biggest assests, because without his big wingspan and his high release point, he wouldn't be able to throw a 400 mph pitch that looks like it's coming from the first base.

One of those catch 22s.

Re: The Giants sign Bumgarner
I vehemently disagree Howie.  Asscrack Face's biggest asset is the sheer magnitude of his ugliness. Not even the worst teammate of all time could focus on the ball leaving Johnson's hand, so hideous is The Big Ugly's countenance.

Normally I agree with you on such matters, but regretfully, I must part company with you on this particular issue. At least with big, one always has the chance to pick up the ball. But Johnson is not only ugly, he is X-Game ugly. His ugliness makes Bill Brasky crap in his pants.  Johnson is so ugly he collapses large buildings just by looking at his reflection in the window. Johnson's face is so repulsive, he has changed the electormagnetic field surrounding the earth.  One gaze from him has been known to melt entire glaciers. Superman once wet his pants when standing in against him in extra innings.  Randy Johnson rarely drinks beer, but when he does, he makes sure its Dos XX.  "Stay thirsty my friends" is what he said just before he wiped out 26 zombies on "Dawn of the Living Dead" with a signal glance.

Re: The Giants sign Bumgarner
we should bring in a neurologist, but I will innocently say that lefties are slower to develop because the brain is hard wired to be right handed.
And I agree with big guys taking longer to refine coordination.
It all adds up to: better not rush the Mad Bum to the majors until there is a secondary pitch that is not obvious to hitters, and excellent location on the heater, and a mix of speeds.
Like most of the posters here I am excited by the talent and potential we picked up in this draft

Re: The Giants sign Bumgarner
And I am discouraged by the prospect of what the idiots in the Giants system will do to ruin him.

Slower development of screw-foots is caused by Coriolis force. Righties have similar difficulties in Australia and other countries below the Equator. For example, Johann Santana, a Venezuelan, has not experienced the control and development issues that routinely affect lefties, even great ones like Koufax.  But other righties, from Venezuela like Omar and Ozzie Guillen, are viewed upon as eccentrics.

Its all pretty simple really. Its the earth's rotation.

Sincerely

Dr. Baseball Science

Re: The Giants sign Bumgarner
Thomas (San Francisco): I'm happy that my Giants could sign all three of their first rounders! Any potential big stars of the bunch in your expert opinion?

Keith Law: (1:27 PM ET ) All three are potential stars, although oddly enough, I like Alderson (odd delivery, but outstanding control and a plus-plus slider) and Fairley (really raw, but one of the best tools packages in this draft) more than Bumgarner.

Fourteen-game loser Paul Maholm fired a three-hitter and the Pirates' second complete game in two days against the Giants
