Confusion has set in
Alright, so I am officially throwing in the towel, well actually it was thrown in a long time ago I am just now coming to grips with it. But here is my confusion, why in the hell did we start Kevin Correia yesterday? Why not Sanchez, Misch, Kinney, etc? This is exactly why it is tough to be a Giants fan, this and the fact they haven't won a world series since they have been in S.F. (and for the record the Marlins have won two since they were brought into the league in the 90s!!!!!)
Here we have a perfect opportunity to see what the future has in store with our young players and make moves based on their ability to prove whether they belong in the Bigs or not. What do our crack (or on crack) GM and Manager do? We start a relief pitcher. The fact that it looks like he pitched well is beside the point. He is not a starter. We have others who are waiting there turn, and in my opinion deserve it more than Correia does. At the very least, we see what the others have and maybe that allows us to move them or one of the others in the off-season for some bats. Starting Correia yesterday did nothing for the future of this team and that pisses me off!!!!!

So, the specific answer to your questions: Misch and Sanchez couldn't be recalled from the minors because 10 days hadn't elapsed sent they were sent down; Matt Kinney didn't start because he's done relatively little to justify ever appearing in the majors again (and he probably won't). Now could they have found somebody else to send down rather than Misch when they activated Ortiz? That's a more difficult question.

And yeah. Corriea does not have starter stuff. Not. even. close. That was evidence as guys started to come up for the third time.

Re: Confusion has set in
The last time Kinney pitched for the Giants, they used 12 different starters in the course of the season. The only way he's coming back is if they need 13 this year.

Re: Confusion has set in
The main reason he wasn't considered an option in the rotation this year was because he was so effective out of the pen last year, which hasn't been the case this year, though he hasn't pitched bad.

4.98 K/9 (very low)
4.86 BB/9 (very high)
0.50 HR/9 (unsustainable)
he allows way too many baserunners for someone who strikes out so few hitters, there are quite a few GMs out there who are still in love with wins and era and if we can find a good deal for a solid young hitter we need to jump on it immediately

That said, I like the idea of starting Kevin, since as a starter he won't be decimated by giving up an ill-timed home run. As a starter he would have time to recover from it and still pitch a decent game.
After Kevin was the only reliever not used Friday night, I figured he would be Tuesday's starter. When the Giants had him instead pitch two innings on Saturday, I thought he wouldn't be.
I'm not sure why they didn't bring him in on Friday instead of Atchison, Messenger or Sanchez. If they had given him his innings on Friday instead of Saturday, perhaps he would have lasted more than 4 1/3 innings, at at time when the bullpen needed all the rest it could get.
Just think how messed up things would have gotten had Barry Zito been knocked out in the first inning Sunday. After he threw only six strikes on his first 20 pitches, walking the first three batters in the process, that appeared to be a possibility.
Perhaps the Giants are indeed planning their pitching well. All I can say is that they are doing it quite a bit differently than I would.
As another recent example, why did they pitch Atchison two nights in a row Tuesday and Wednesday when he pitched multiple innings (2.0) on Tuesday? Was it horribly surprising that he was pretty awful on the second straight night?
