Confusion has set in

Alright, so I am officially throwing in the towel, well actually it was thrown in a long time ago I am just now coming to grips with it.  But here is my confusion, why in the hell did we start Kevin Correia yesterday?  Why not Sanchez, Misch, Kinney, etc?  This is exactly why it is tough to be a Giants fan, this and the fact they haven't won a world series since they have been in S.F. (and for the record the Marlins have won two since they were brought into the league in the 90s!!!!!)

Here we have a perfect opportunity to see what the future has in store with our young players and make moves based on their ability to prove whether they belong in the Bigs or not.  What do our crack (or on crack) GM and Manager do?  We start a relief pitcher.  The fact that it looks like he pitched well is beside the point.  He is not a starter.  We have others who are waiting there turn, and in my opinion deserve it more than Correia does.  At the very least, we see what the others have and maybe that allows us to move them or one of the others in the off-season for some bats.  Starting Correia yesterday did nothing for the future of this team and that pisses me off!!!!!

And tonight we get to watch Russ Ortiz pitch while Pat Misch is in Fresno!
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

Re: Confusion has set in
I know - brilliant eh? (Perhaps Misch's 10 days aren't up) They're bad and old - only Sabean could pull that off.
Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.

Re: Confusion has set in
They probably aren't, but still... it's just kind of a microcosm of the Giants.

Re: Confusion has set in
Maybe Sabean is hoping Ortiz shines, its another one of his supposed waiver trades he is trying to make, LOL. You the reson why we have to watch them play Winn, Roberts, Durham , and Aurilia everyday instead of Davis, Lewis, Schierholtz, Ortmeir and Frandsen.
Forget trading the old guys, Sabean must go first!!!!

Re: Confusion has set in
I agree with your larger point, but to fair the logistics of the last week or so have been difficult.  They've had to make up for the loss of two starters, a DH without a day off within a week on either side, and an imploding bullpen.

So, the specific answer to your questions: Misch and Sanchez couldn't be recalled from the minors because 10 days hadn't elapsed sent they were sent down; Matt Kinney didn't start because he's done relatively little to justify ever appearing in the majors again (and he probably won't). Now could they have found somebody else to send down rather than Misch when they activated Ortiz? That's a more difficult question.

Re: Confusion has set in
I think getting a look at Correia was a good thing.  And he looked sharp out there to boot!  I'd like to see him start another one.  As someone said on the Gameday thread, he might be another option in the rotation if Sanchez or Lowry get traded.
Bold Prediction: Klesko will finish the 2007 season with at least 20 HRs. (OPS+ is 129 as of 7/1/07)

Why not Correia?
Kevin Correia has some of the nastiest stuff on the staff and pitched great. Correia has always wanted to be a starter so hopefully he is given every opportunity to succeed and provide Brian Sabean with as many options necessary to turn this club into a winner. Pat Misch was not available because of procedure. Jonathan Sanchez, who earned his demotion, surely is kicking himself because he knows he should have been the starter. Matt Kinney is not an option for the Giants.

Re: Why not Correia?
The main problem with Correia and being a starter is the lack of an off-speed pitch.  He's a slider, fastball guy, and to be a starter, you "generally" need something to change up the pace.  I mean, Nolan Ryan's curveball was faster than like 80% of the league's heaters but that's different because he threw 900 mph fastballs.  Correia's stuff IS nasty, and he DOES want to be a starter but he's going to need a change-up or forkball, or something to keep hitters off-balance.
If Brad Hennesy had Steve Kline's attitude you'd get Rob Nen... without the triple digit heat.

Re: Why not Correia?
Actually Ryan's fastball only clocked in at 847 mph. His changeup was 651mph. They say he threw so fast, he already had the ball back in his glove by the time you could hear it hit the catchers mitt.  And that was his offspeed stuff.  He threw faster than Satchell Paige could run.

And yeah. Corriea does not have starter stuff. Not. even. close. That was evidence as guys started to come up for the third time.

Re: Confusion has set in
Kevin Correia is far more likely to figure in the future of the Giants' starting rotation than 30-year-old career minor leaguer Matt Kinney is.

The last time Kinney pitched for the Giants, they used 12 different starters in the course of the season. The only way he's coming back is if they need 13 this year.

Re: Confusion has set in
Yeah, starting Kinney would have met the dictionary definitions of "pointless" and "short-sighted". Correia has experience as a starter, both in the majors and minors, and is still young and talented enough to possibly have a future as a starter.

Re: Confusion has set in
I agree with Goofus Wilriv and Eliminateme, I've always thought Corriea would make a good starter, hopefully the Giants have opened their eyes a bit to possibly moving him back into the rotation.

The main reason he wasn't considered an option in the rotation this year was because he was so effective out of the pen last year, which hasn't been the case this year, though he hasn't pitched bad.

Re: Confusion has set in
Kevin gives up alot of homeruns that kill you when he's coming out of the bullpen, but as a starter wouldn't be a big deal. However if you make him a starter, who is the odd man out?? You have Zito, Cain, Lincecum and Lowry and hopefully Jonathan Sanchez will be added to that list next year. There's really no room for him.

Re: Turn pitching surplus into needed position pla
lowrys value will never be as high if he finishes the season with 17ish wins and under a 3.50 ERA, I like the guy but I don't see there being any chance of a repeat of those numbers when his peripherals are so bad:
4.98 K/9 (very low)
4.86 BB/9 (very high)
0.50 HR/9 (unsustainable)

he allows way too many baserunners for someone who strikes out so few hitters, there are quite a few GMs out there who are still in love with wins and era and if we can find a good deal for a solid young hitter we need to jump on it immediately

Re: Turn pitching surplus into needed position pla
there are also a lot of fans out there who are in love with the wins as well.  the pitcher's job is to keep his team in the ballgame.  lowry and cain are the only two pitchers who have done it the most consistently all year (timmy not factoring in just yet, since he didn't start all year).  i am all in favor of getting good young hitting, but i think we need to be patient.  all signs point to a fire sale after this year and with the free agents coming up in the next year or two, you may not have to give up any young/good pitching for quality hitting.

Re: Turn pitching surplus into needed position pla
I'm not really sure who you're thinking about in the FA market.  The trend the last few years is for most teams to lock up their premier talent, so the FA's classes have getting barer and barer, which helps drive the prices way up as teams dive after the one or two difference makers on the market.  I don't really see a whole lineup worth of quality material hitting the market in the next two years.  (Also, signs or no signs, I'm still not sure how many people are going to want a lot of our players. Durham, Aurilia, Roberts, Winn, Molina, aren't going to be that enticing to alot of people.  So our "everything must go" sign could easily be ignored by the public at large.)

Re: Confusion has set in
I thought the Giants showed a lack of foresight when they sent Pat Misch down before allowing him to make one more start, solving the problem of the extra starter.

That said, I like the idea of starting Kevin, since as a starter he won't be decimated by giving up an ill-timed home run.  As a starter he would have time to recover from it and still pitch a decent game.

After Kevin was the only reliever not used Friday night, I figured he would be Tuesday's starter.  When the Giants had him instead pitch two innings on Saturday, I thought he wouldn't be.

I'm not sure why they didn't bring him in on Friday instead of Atchison, Messenger or Sanchez.  If they had given him his innings on Friday instead of Saturday, perhaps he would have lasted more than 4 1/3 innings, at at time when the bullpen needed all the rest it could get.

Just think how messed up things would have gotten had Barry Zito been knocked out in the first inning Sunday.  After he threw only six strikes on his first 20 pitches, walking the first three batters in the process, that appeared to be a possibility.

Perhaps the Giants are indeed planning their pitching well.  All I can say is that they are doing it quite a bit differently than I would.

As another recent example, why did they pitch Atchison two nights in a row Tuesday and Wednesday when he pitched multiple innings (2.0) on Tuesday?  Was it horribly surprising that he was pretty awful on the second straight night?
