3-4-5 in 2008?

We all know what a team without a legit #3 hitter looks like.

What will be the look and feel of the 3-4-5 spots in 2008?   With most folks speculating that the greatest-offensive-player-ever won't be back with the Giants next season, we could be watching a team without legit #3 and #4 hitters.

Any ideas what the 'heart' of the order will look like (atherosclerosis humor welcomed)?

Cepeda vs Hart
If Glaus is too costly in terms of talent then possibly deal for Miggy Tejada.

No, no, no.

You have to hit Ransom ahead of Feliz.  To take advantage of his on-base abilities.  The way you have it will never happen.

Re: 3-4-5 in 2008?
"With most folks speculating that the greatest-offensive-player-ever won't be back with the Giants next season."

I think that should read "With some folks speculating that..."

I don't know that most people who have actually thought about what the team might look like without Bondsa actually believe that he won't be back...

But anyway, that's kind of trivial of me. Onto speculating!

I firmly believe Bonds will be back, so there's my #4. As for 3 and 5, that is very tough. I don't feel like counting on free agency, but I'm going to assume Durham won't be there (either gone, backing up, or hurt) as well... so mine might be prospect heavy.

If all goes well with Schierholtz, he could definitely bat behind or in front(!?) of Bonds, but I imagine we're looking at another year of Molina in the 5 hole, every now and then spelled by Lewis, Feliz (assuming a re-up), and Schierholtz.

I also have the feeling Klesko will get another year since there's almost no way to retool the infield for next season, and Bochy has a habit of batting him third.

Ugh... this is depressing me...

BEST CASE SCENARIO!!!

  1. A. Rodriguez
  2. B. Bonds
  3. Schierholtz (the good version)/Vilallona (ha!)/SomeGoodFA
I feel a little better now.

So that's my speculation, all off the very top of my head.

Re: 3-4-5 in 2008?
Honest question here--why do you think Bonds will be back? I'm not saying he won't, but it doesn't seem to make a heck of a lot of sense to me. And I think that any lineup that has Molina hitting higher than 7th is a bad lineup. Feliz needs to go, Durham needs to go, and they need to play some young guys and change the way they play to more of a running game.

If you ask me, I would let Bonds go and try and get ARod.

Re: 3-4-5 in 2008?
To put it briefly, he'll be the best bat we can hope to land in the outfield, he won't be blocking anybody, he'll have a one year contract so any money we put dwn on him will be off the books in '09, he's still a revenue draw, there might be some excitement ovet 3000 hits in a season that is all but conceded to failure already.

But the basics are that the money for him will be there, there is nobody better to put on the team in left field in '08, he won't be blocking talent, and the one year contract will be gone before the rebuild comes around and we might need the money because f Zito's backloaded crap-greement.

-

A-rod, on the otherhand, will pull close to 30 mil a year for a long term contract, and while he'd be great to have on the team it's hard for me to believe that something like that wouldn't cripple any chance for success once Zito's contract begins to extend past 15 mil a year.

  1. Outside of Arod, he's still the best hitting FA available
  2. He's a near-life-time Giant and should finish his career here
  3. Only will take a 1-year contract

I hope you're joking with this comment. Is he a switch hitter?  Is his defense as good? DOes he play every day?  The answer is no to every one of those questions, so the fact the his fucking ops is 2 points higher than Winn's is irrelevant

Re: 3-4-5 in 2008?
shhh calm down.  You overrate the value of switch hitting and Winn's defense.  If he played every day i'm sure he'd be able to balance out his extraordinarily ugly .197 batting average.  Also, it is OPS+, park adjusted and neutralized.  Branyan has performed averagely, despite the ungodly BA.  Winn has been almost the same, just a little less.  given playing time, I believe Russell Branyan would make a fine addition to a lineup and a well deserved respite from Happy Pete at third.  Now please, calmez-vous and keep the profanities to a minimum.

Thanks,

Tyler

Re: 3-4-5 in 2008?
I just threw this in Grant's "Frustration Spilleth Over" which is now kinda dead so... as a resource I don't see being mentioned, how about whatever the Japanese league has to offer.  There's a guy (Fukudome) who has had a few 30hr 100rbi seasons recently and whose career stats look to be on the upswing (versus alot of the free agents we're talking about).  He'll be 31 next season, which isn't young young, but hey, it's basically compensating for the lack of run producers from our system.  I have no idea whether his success would translate to the bigs.
Also, this is your invitation to point at me and laugh, but why not give our own Scott "Jack Cust" McClain a shot this September?  26 big flies already this season.  I know "career minor leaguer for a reason" blah blah blah.  All the conventional wisdom says "no", but with our minor league situation, why not?

Hahah at Russel Branyan being better than anything we have, I would honestly rather have Durham back, did you watch the Pads play all year, the guy was barely ahead of the Mendoza line with very little power. If we picked up A-Rod there is no way Bonds would not hit in front of him, are you serious, think about it Bonds walks ALL THE TIME and A-Rod walks less than a 100 times a year

OHOHO A TERRIBLE BATTING AVERAGE IN VERY LITTLE PLAYING TIME, THAT GUY MUST BE A PIECE OF SHIT!!!

do some research: the guy is a way above average on-base guy with some definite punch.  He's a great option for third.

THINK ABOUT IT!!! AROD IS GOING TO COST 30 MILLION; WE CAN'T AFFORD THAT.

if you have branyan, who walks all the time, followed by Bonds, who walks all the time, you are going to have a lot of baserunners: a key ingrdient for scoring runs.

Re: 3-4-5 in 2008?
Oh man oh man, do some research??? What did you just become a baseball fan yesterday, Russel Branyan is not a good hitter and never has been. He has pop, that is it. He is hitting .202 in 124 at-bats this season. A career .230 hitter in 1800 career at-bats, and his career OBP is an AMAZING .327 and this year an even better .324 and your telling me to do some research. There was a reason he was designated for assignment by a team with no pop to begin with. Don't you think the Padres would have hung onto him if he was as good as you say he is. I'm not sure where this, walks all the time came from either, 24 walks in 124 at bats to go along with 50 k's. To compare Pedro has been up 431 times and struck out a whopping 46 times. Pedro has more pop than Branyan and is a much better defender than anybody we could sign.
