Open Rampant Speculation Thread

The Dodgers' organization:

Hitters

Pitchers

What's a Sweeney worth? It can't be much, but that's what we thought about the Michael Tucker trade, and we ended up with a legitimate prospect out of that one.

Random guess: Wesley Wright.

Manny Mota. Giants replace one old pinch hitting specialist with another. I don't know who we'll get, I'm just glad we traded another old guy and brought up a much younger one.

Re: Open Rampant Speculation Thread
More sharing of names I find amusing:

Bridger Hunt
Joris Bert
Given Kutz

Giuseppe Norrito and Arismendy Castillo are pretty cool sounding names.

Geison Aguasviva and Yulkin German...kind of out there, but still interesting names.

Rubby De la Rosa though, not sure about that one.

The winner for me is Daigoro Rondon, a rookie league pitcher the Dodgers drafted this year. Cool name, and not so bad statwise: http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/R/Daigoro-Rondon.shtml

Favorite Giants prospect name ever.

As a prospect, however, he wasn't really considered, (wait for it...) legitimate.

Talk about a prodigy. According to the Baseball Cube page, he was born in 1985 and played for AAA Toledo in 1981!

Then he took a few years off (presumably for being born and such) and was back in pro ball at age 14.

Re: Open Rampant Speculation Thread
the deal is for PTNBL or cash.

usually in a PTBNL deal, the teams agree on a list of player to choose from or a list that is off limits and you can have anybody else (subject to rules and restrictions)

this could be a deal where no list has been created -- simply an agreement on a cash value unless they can agree on a player

My cynical side says it'll be Ryan Rogowski: 23-year-old left fielder with speed but no pop, currently in high-A. Because it seems we just can't get enough guys like that.

Did you notice that "Wesley" is apparently a nickname? According to the MiLB site his real name is Dequam Wright. Helpful to remember in case you ever need to heckle him.

hahaha that's great.

i'll take anything good enough to upgrade at any position at any level on the farm. maybe someone with loads of patience at the plate and no speed, just because it'd be unique to this organization.

but i like that we're saving some cash & getting 50 PA's to our kids. I was shocked when I learned who we dealt with. This is like sending your ex-wife the lampshade she always complained that you didn't give her back (you had the receipt with your credit card on it) in exchange for the Montrose records she says she "lost."

Who knows, with the trades that good 'ol Ned has made, maybe he'll mess up again and give us LaRoche. I'd be REALLY happy with

Hu, Chin-Lung SS 23 AA,AAA .338  .381  .516  .897

We could also probably get any catcher or 1b we wanted, since those positions will be blocked for a while in LA.

I'll preface this comment by emphasizing that I'd like to see the Giants get the best players they can find, regardless of their race or ethnicity. From a pure marketing perspective, though, it's baffling that they haven't tried to acquire more Asian prospects like this guy, whether through trades or the farm system. Did the Shinjo Experience make them gunshy?

You know, perhaps taking a flier on one of their catchers wouldn't be a bad thing.  That organization does have a knack for developing solid catchers (if not eventually overpaid and not so solid), no?

Three point plan
-Raid Bengie's wine supply.
-Send Sween Dawg to LA with five bottles of the best stuff from Bengie's supply with a note that says "TO NED"
-Make sure he cannonballs the bottles back to back.

Then call and ask for Hu or Kershaw.

Sabean said he and Colletti agreed on the Giants' choice of one minor league pitcher or hitter for one minor league pitcher or hitter for Sweeney, who accepted a series of hugs - including one from managing partner Peter Magowan - while packing his bags.

Re: Open Rampant Speculation Thread
I don't know, Sabes would't have done this trade if he wasn't getting something of even relative value back. Sweeny's contract expired at the end of this year, so a salary dump when we owed less than 500k is curious. I know that they wanted to get him somewehere so that the kids can play, but I'm thinking that the desperate Dodgers might have one pulled over on them.

Or, I might be overestimting Sabean. Wouldn't be the first time. Wouldn't be the 10,000th time.

Re: Open Rampant Speculation Thread
the article said that they almost made this trade a week ago, which obviously means that Sweeney was not claimed on waivers by the Dodgers, and that he was traded when he passed through all teams. I would like to think that this means the Dodgers were one of several teams interested and they gave the best offer. I like Sabean's comments that "Sweeney was playing sparingly and they need to look at other players." Welcome back to the majors, Dan Ortmeier. You are replacing Mark Sweeney at the "playing sparingly" position!!

Re: Open Rampant Speculation Thread
It just occurred to me - now we know why Sabean was stockpiling all those first basemen in the offseason. With Sweeney gone and Aurilia on the DL, we're down to only Klesko.

Unless 1B is one of the places where Ortmeier will be playing sparingly, that is...

Re: Open Rampant Speculation Thread
I doubt we'll get DeWitt, he's a pretty good prospect who is pretty close, that would be a great deal then.  He could play 2B or 3B.

Bell maybe, he's still in rookie ball at age 20, and barely hitting there (but why is he playing with the GCL Red Loons, did he get traded or was he loaned out?).

Kyle Orr might be another low prospect with high potential we could get.  I mentioned Cory Dunlap I think before.  Both are 1B prospects.
