Seattle/Balentien trade...

With the way that Weaver has been pitching, they are going to feel the pain for not trading for Lowry or any other SP.  Considering that they have Jones and Balentien who are both ready to be promoted next year, and considering that they might only have one OF position open, it is very plausable that a trade can still be made.  Maybe not in the next month, but in the offseason.

So if Lowry continues to improve, or at least doesn't shit his pants like Morris did, is anyone still up for a SF-Seattle honeymoon in the offseason?

I figure if we can do a deal with Seattle, then we won't need to overpay for an outfielder, and that gives us even more room to bring in A-Rod.

Re: Seattle/Balentien trade...
It still seems like a natural fit. Seattle needs pitchers and we need hitters, and they're the sort of organization that might be seduced by wins and ERA.

Moreover, they've got these two right-handed outfielders coming up at the same time, and a park that kills right-handed batters. Meanwhile, we've got all these left-handed outfielders and a park that kills lefties. I'd like to see something like Lowry and Lewis for Balentien and one of their third-base prospects (Tuiasasopo or Liddi) and an arm.

But this scheme is going to be ruined at some point during this season, because sooner or later Lowry is going to go through a wretched patch like the one Morris gave us over the last six weeks.

You might think so
but, I look at the calendar, and it says August 1.  Lowry will be lights out this month.

Re: You might think so
I realize Noah has a fantastic track record in August.

I predict this is the season it ends.

Incidentally, he has been HORRIBLE in September.

Re: Seattle/Balentien trade...
this isn't the place, of course, but i need to express my incredulity that Lowry has 12 wins. for the Giants.

Lowry's Success
I was at the game last night in Dodger Stadium.  On the drive home, I had an epiphany about Lowry's success and how it ties in with the rest of the pitching staff, Rags and Bochy.  Don't have time to go into it now.  I will start a new diary when I have time, but it has to do with walk rates, K rates, HR allowed rates and not throwing pitches down the middle of the strike zone.

You mean the way Mat Morris does?

Re: Lowry's Success
Well, I'll be eager to read it. I can accept that a pitcher might be able to consistently outperform his peripherals, but not to this extent. Lowry's not throwing strikes, he's not getting swing-throughs, and he's not even keeping the ball on the ground any more. As near as I can tell, the only difference between him and Zito is dumb luck and $115 million.

Re: Lowry's Success
That last sentence really made me lol.

I watched last night's game and couldn't believe the jams Lowry got out of. What did he have, one strikeout the whole night? Plus he nearly threw a wild pitch on an intentional walk. But hey, good for him. It's unlikely but hardly out of the realm of possibility that he could win 20 games this season, on a team that probably won't win much more than 75.

Re: Lowry's Success
I believe Noah has stolen Kirk Rueter's old shamrock.  I can't remember a season in which a pitcher has been so lucky.

I felt the same way about Randy Messenger until his last couple of outings.

Re: Lowry's Success
Youn Now its funny, I and many other Giants fans compare Lorwy to Kirk Rueter, but with better stuff. I think I got to change that. He seems more like a left handed Russ Ortiz(with out the velocity) back when Ortiz was good for us, 00-02'. Ortiz's M.O. was to get into trouble almost every inning with runners on 1st and 2nd with one out, or unners on the corners. Then Russ would battle his way out of the jam. Noah Lowry does the same thing, it seems like he has runners on every inning, and he has to pitch himself out of a jam.

Re: Seattle/Balentien trade...
With Morris gone, I'm very reluctant to deal Lowry.  Inserting two new starters into the rotation (presumably Sanchez and Misch) makes me nervous.
Bold Prediction: Klesko will finish the 2007 season with at least 20 HRs. (OPS+ is 129 as of 7/1/07)

Sabean is not finished
Sabean knows the importance of pitching so I believe if he were to deal Lowry he would receive another pitcher either in that deal or in another trade.

Re: Seattle/Balentien trade...
That is a legitimate concern.  Not having any supreme young hitting talents and therefore trying to buy everyone in free agency makes me nervous.  Especially when top-caliber free agents are to pussy to play in our park.  Plus there is the fact that Cain hasn't hit his peak, Lincecum hasn't hit his peak, it will take time for Morris' replacement to hit their peak...so when it comes down to it, we have much developing to do still.

And say either Sanchez or Misch doesn't pan out...well we will likely still have Hennessey and Correia who can be stretched out relatively easily.  And who knows where Begg and others will be next year.

I need old crusty vets like I need a nail driven into my brain.

Re: Seattle/Balentien trade...
I would trade Noah while his value is likely as high as it is going to get -- and before it declines.

As for replacements, if Jonathan's arm can take starting OK, he would indeed by my choice along with Sir Patrick.  If not, I would put Kevin Correia back in the rotation where his propensity for untimely home runs wouldn't be as noticeable.

Re: Seattle/Balentien trade...
I'm still very open to trading Lowry, despite moving Morris.  I get the feeling Pat Misch could do the same job as Lowry, and Sanchez can be stretched out in the offseason.

I think for Lowry I'd prefer a larger package.  We all saw what the asking price was for Joe Blanton; I figure we can get at least two solid position prospects for Lowry, given that he's outpitching his peripherals and is winning games for a team that will lose 90.

Eventually, Lowry's numbers will come down to earth and he won't be benefiting from incredible luck.  Lowry's value, I assume, is high.

Trading Noah
I think Lowry is a much better pitcher than some of the McCoven give him credit for. He seems like a real gamer (kind of what I was expecting when Morris came over... bitch) and he is really cheap. I would be much happier trading Sanchez and getting something back based on his perceived value rather than trading away a known quantity guy like Lowry.

The question then becomes: Is Sanchez's value higher than Lowry's because of his prospect status? I don't know but I would be willing to bet that scouts and GMs would be more excited by a lanky hard throwing lefty than a soft tossing gamer.

Its time to cash in on Sanchez and showcasing him by placing him in the rotation would not be a bad move in my opinion.

Re: Trading Noah
Interesting.  I think Noah is a WORSE pitcher than some of the McCoven have given him credit for.  Hey, one of us is right -- or else neither of us is!

Re: Seattle/Balentien trade...
Lowry frustrates me when he issues too many walks, but he leads the league in DPs and gives up few home runs. He's a bulldog...he doesn't give in easily when he doesn't have his best stuff. I would have to be bold over with a trade offer. I certainly wouldn't trade him for a minor leaguer unless he was the reincarnation of Lou Gehrig.

Why stop their, might as well ask for Ted Williams, Babe Ruth and stan Muscial too.

Re: Seattle/Balentien trade...
Noah Lowry is going to win 17-18 games this year, barring injury, and he's going to do that in the major leagues, not AAA ball. Unless Balientien gets up to the majors and tears things up, I don't trade an 18 game winner for a minor leaguer. He could turn out to be a AAAA player, and the joke will be on us. I would've done it for Morris, but not for Lowry. I would only trade Noah for a similar type position player, someone who has been in the league for a few years and shown something, maybe someone like Jason Bay.

We would get more than one prospect if Lowry ends up with 18 wins.

I'm not a huge fan of Balentien, but I would take the first good deal I could get for Noah -- before he loses his value.
